Review: ‘Great Pacific’ #5

Published

on

Acceleration. Motivation. Intimidation. All that with pirates and a nuclear bomb. The story definitely moves into a higher gear in Great Pacific #5. This issue pushes the premise through its initial hook and mutates into something bigger and unpredictable yet logical at the same time.

WRITTEN BY: Joe Harris
ART BY: Martin Morazzo
PUBLISHER: Image Comics
PRICE: $2.99
RELEASE: 6 March 2013

Writer Joe Harris weaves old elements of Chas Worthington’s adventure in country building in this latest chapter and adds layers to what has come before. Just like the garbage island of New Texas itself, the landscape of characters, causes and intent remain in a state of flux. This issue feels like a fast paced game of chicken with the stakes being as high as they can get. You need to pay attention or you might miss who is winning.

Pirates trump idealists. Idealists get trumped by mercenaries. Mercenaries and pirates get trumped by island natives. But the ultimate wild card remains the nuclear bomb that everyone is fighting for. It’s strange how art is imitating life as I read headlines about my neighbor North Korea waving threats now that they have nuclear weapons. It seems that nuclear weapons are the buy-in for the world to recognize a nation in real life and in comics.

I was sad to see the introduction and demise of Mungo all in one issue. You can never have enough Mungo’s in my opinion. The last page made me laugh and have that shock-and-awe moment at the same time. I have no idea how a boy with an island of garbage and one magic trick up his sleeve can out manoeuver what is staring him in the face. That makes me excited to see what Harris and Morazzo will do next.

3.5/5 Skulls
