Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
Joe Hill (aka Stephen King’s son) is a brilliant writer. He hasn’t had a weak novel yet and I’m surprised his first one, Heart-Shaped Box, hasn’t been adapted into a film yet. It’s fascinating that Hill’s weirdest (and probably the most difficult to translate to film) novel Horns is his only one to actually receive an adaptation, bit I digress. Heart-Shaped Box is a unique ghost story about an aging ex-rock star named Jude who gets mailed a suit (in a heart-shaped box) that is possessed by a ghost (it’s more effective than it sounds). It features one of the creepiest passages I’ve ever read in a novel involving the ghost sending a threatening email to Jude. There has never been any talk of adapting Heart-Shaped Box into a film, but I see Jeff Bridges as Jude and maybe Matt Frewer as the ghost. Juliette Lewis would make a great Georgia (Jude’s girlfriend) too.
