This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. As a girl horror fan I love horror movies aimed mostly at girls and its fun making my boy mates watch it and having them cringe at the period scenes :P .

Emily Perkins is amazing, as she was in IT and it has some amazing quotes. Excellent opening and closing scenes, you have to watch it.

Wow. I watched this movie a week ago and I’m still thinking about it. This movie is definitely better than ‘An American Werewolf in London.’ It has a gorgeous teenage actress and a great coming of age story (that high school is so realistic) mixed with awesome gore and many disturbing situations. The ending was purposefully unfulfilling, and you’ll need to see the movie to understand what I mean. See this film NOW!

Ginger Snaps has to be one of the most memorable horror movies of all time. A sleeper hit of the highest grade. As a Canadian, I have to say I’m quite proud of this movie. Previews made it out to be another lame teen slasher, but there was something different about it. I decided to see it and my instincts proved right.

I’m fairly desensitized to horror movies, so I didn’t get scared while watching this. However, it’s loads of fun and emotionally draining. The music is also worth noting. Mike Shields score for Ginger Snaps is dark and brooding and really puts a dent in your mood. This is an indie movie that is sure to obtain a cult following in the future if it hasn’t already.

There is nothing higher I can say of any movie than that it’s memorable. I’ve seen literally thousands of movies and, honestly, the second after I write a review for them, I usually forget them. They’re just a blur then. Asking me to even remember the main character’s name as the movie is playing, much less afterward, is just a joke, because characters have no character anymore. In the majority of movies I force myself to sit through–a lot of them critically acclaimed–I can walk out in the first opening 15 minutes, then come back in the last 15 minutes and know everything that happened when I was gone. (And, no, I don’t do that, though I wish I could.) But Ginger Snaps isn’t like that at all. It’s memorable. While the majority of Hollywood just draws plots out of the pathetic pit of clichés the original monsters–vampire, werewolf, ghost–have become, Ginger Snaps doesn’t. It’s truly the most original werewolf movie ever written.

But do not get me wrong: Ginger Snaps is a drama set in a horror universe and that’s all it tries to be. I could go on to the point of nausea about how pathetic the drama genre has become, but Ginger Snaps also flies in the face of those clichés as well. Do not let the word “drama” scare off all the hardcore horror fans, either. Ginger Snaps has enough blood–the opening scene must have sent PETA through the roof!–and action to hold you until the end. The dramatic bits are some of the best I’ve ever seen, as well, because none of the characters are clichés and you honestly care for them. Also, I’ve seen a lot of “funny” horror movies that just repeat the same jokes over and over again, but Ginger Snaps had me genuinely laughing quite a few times.

On a technical level, the directing in very clever, and it’s noticeable. The camera shows/doesn’t show certain things that always keeps the audience in a bit of mystery as to what just happened, and it’s never once annoying. You hear a certain conversation and you assume it means one thing, then the next scene shows it meant something completely different. I’ve never seen directing quite like this, and it was very well-done and never predictable. A lot of the movie even has a crimson tint to it, which was downright awesome. Acting is perfect.

Now the bad: The length is a little unnecessary, especially around the ending, when it seems the same things keep happening over and over. It it were cut by 20 minutes or so, my score would be a lot higher.

The visual effects are horrible. The werewolves look like big plastic figurines, being that their skin and faces don’t move. This has nothing to do with the overall awesome effect of the movie, and can be easily ignored, but it’s just a big problem I have with calling it a perfect film.

In the end, though, Ginger Snaps is nearly perfect, even if my score suggests otherwise. You won’t see a better teen drama in your lifetime, and you won’t find any film out there like it at all. Ignore the really bad pun, but it’s totally a beast of it’s own.

This was a very well done werewolf movie that is usually forgotten. I believe this is one of the most underrated movies of the 2000′s while movies like Blair Witch Project are the most overrated. This movie has a dark atomosphere and at times a very dark sense of humor, it doesn’t take itself too seriously but at times it does, but not in a bad way. The story of the two sisters gets to you and you can’t look away from the screen, you just want to keep watching their weird suicide pictures and see how Ginger is changing. Watch this underrated movie and enjoy. An easy 8/10

This movie was and still is a real treat to watch. I first saw it years ago and still to this day continue to pop it in my DVD player when I feel like having a good ole fashioned Friday night alone in my room with a few good horror films playing. The two main characters the film is centered around really pull you in and make you actually care for them and the problems they are both facing throughout the entire film. This movie was a very original take on werewolf stories and it delivers where most films that try just fail. Not only do we get good acting, a pleasant look and feel (the movie looks great), some incredible scares and a great story, but we also get a great load of laughs thrown in to remind us that a lot of good horror films take us on a joy ride of not only chills and thrills but humor as well. The film is followed by two sequels, part two being very good and part three being somewhat mediocre, and although I enjoyed the entire series, the first one has always and always will stand out as a classic in the horror genre. Two thumbs way up.

Do not let the cheesy tagline and the low budget discourage you from seeing this movie. Ginger Snaps is absolutely a feminine movie, driven by two amazing lead actresses who start out as two goths who just (don’t) want to fit in, but when the oldest sister gets bitten by a werewolf on the full moon, things get hairy, in more ways than one. First off, if you pay close attention, you’ll see Ginger Snaps filled to the brim with symbolism involving women coming in to adulthood and how it changes them. Second, the acting is so natural and easy to believe. Third, the script is very cleverly put together, and fourth, the resolution will leave you startled. Perfect.

One of the better werewolf movies. I really liked how they tied the coming of puberty with the changes of a werewolf so what we see is Ginger making 2 big chnges, at one level she is becoming a werewolf and a woman at the same time. As she is becoming the werewolf, we have the plot of her becoming a woman which is what everybody in the movie is seeing happening to ginger with the exception of her sister.

A film that dares to ask the question: what’s the real horror – turning into a werewolf or puberty? Let’s put the two side by side, shall we? Each round, the winner is the loser (since we’re looking for the most horror filled experience). Round 1 (General discussion): Puberty. It sucks. Werewolf. It sucks too. Winner? TIE! Round 2 (Duration): Puberty only happens once, it lasts too long. Werewolf happens every new moon, it lasts a couple days at most. Winner? PUBERTY! Round 3 (What’s happening to my body?): Puberty gives you zits and odd sprouts of hair. Werewolf gives you a three piece hair suit and lice. Winner? WEREWOLF! Round 4 (Relatives): Puberty means your parents just don’t understand. Werewolf means your parents just got eaten. Winner? WEREWOLF! Round 5 (Body fluids): Puberty leads to wet dreams and menstrual cycles. Werewolf leads to fever dreams and bloody massacres. Winner? PUBERTY. Round 6 (Weaknesses): Puberty falls for the opposite sex. Werewolf falls for silver bullets (and The Flowbee). Winner? PUBERTY. Round 7 (Keeping secrets): Puberty introduces masturbation. Werewolf introduces mutilation. Winner? WEREWOLF! (Clearly.) So, pretty much it’s a tie.

I really love this film. I remember when I first saw it, it was on a Friday the 13th back in ’02, and I thought it was the best recent werewolf flick I had seen. The acting is fantastic, and the film has some of the best character development in recent horror. The chemistry between Katie Isabelle and Emily Perkins is wonderful, you really believe they’re sisters. The effects are great as well, especially the wolf and Ginger’s transformation. The film isn’t overly gory, but when something happens it leaves a lasting impression(like the scene where the chick slips and cracks her skull on the edge of the counter). If anyone hasn’t seen this yet, I recommend you go out and get a copy, you won’t be disappointed. Just watch the first 2, for the third is a boring waste of time.

Just seen this today, great film. Its more of a thrilling, emotional film, with a very involving storyline and good scares, than an out-and-out horror, but its made to work.

Interesting plot and character development (of the two main protagonists) – very believable.
Not too simple, yet not too complex. Very cleverly made. If that weren’t enough, Ginger is hot as.

I found it a real insight into teenage girls, in a sense (not that this serves as a stereotype because the main protagonists are social outcasts – lonely goths).

    9/10

    Ginger Snaps
    4/13/2010

This independent cult horror hit from Canada was released in 2000 and is one of those movies that comes along that has no big stars, no budget and yet is a completely satisfying experience. To date it has also spawned two sequels that were filmed back to back in 2004. “Ginger Snaps: Unleashed” and “Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning.”

This is the story of two teenage sisters named Ginger and Brigitte Fitzgerald, played by Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins. They are your average rebellious suburban teens. They are obsessed with death and stage phony crime scene photos for a class project. They are counter culture outsiders that have made a suicide pact with one another, “Out by 16 or death by then.” Screen veteran Mimi Rogers nails the part of Pamela, the girls’ neurotic and clueless mother. There is a father somewhere in the mix but is really a non factor.

This movie is a suspenseful horror movie, a strong metaphor for female puberty and a great character study of the relationship of the two sisters. While out for a walk in the park one night Ginger is attacked and dragged away by a werewolf on the very day of her first period. Brigitte finds her and they return home. Ginger starts to heal from her wounds almost immediately, and transformation has begun. She becomes “sexified” and trolls the halls of her high school looking for her next victim. This movie also warns about the dangers of unprotected sex, when one of the high school guys does the deed with the “new” Ginger and starts to change himself. Ginger starts to grow hair in strange places and also begins to sprout a tail.

Brigitte searches for a cure and becomes friends with the local high school drug dealer. They find that a certain plant called “Monk’s Hood” could possibly cure what plagues Ginger and the others. Because the filmmakers were working on such a small budget, they did not use any CG effects when Ginger finally transformers into a werewolf and it totally works. Just like in “An American Werewolf in London” all of the werewolf effects were created through practical effects and sheer inventiveness. I was truly surprised at how good this movie was, the two main characters were dead on perfect, there was lot or real suspense and it was just a fun time watching it. I thought the first sequel was pretty decent with the latest one being pretty unwatchable. Ginger Snaps has a special place in my vast DVD collection.

It has the occasional campy, gory scenes. It is definitely not like every other werewolf movie out there. I highly recommend it.

Being a movie for its time it twisted the traditional views on werewolves & it was successful in creating a whole new idea & concept on the topic.

The directors choice of actors/actress’s compliment the script written especially his choice of Katherine Isabelle (Ginger) & Emily Perkins (Brigitte) to portray the young alternate teens whether then finding another everyday female actress & trying to make her into what they wanted.

The look & idea of the werewolves & the tranformation being described as a “diease” & that there can be a possible way to slow or prevent the transformation also opens doors for the sequel, prequel & possibly more films based around the idea.

I love how the werewolf(ginger)complete tranformation is fleshie & not a hairy ape mutation as seen in alot of films.

Over all it is one of my favorite films of all time.

    Kero.

Ginger Snaps is a dark comedy/coming of age teen drama where lycanthrophy is used as a metaphor for the onset of/realization of sexuality/sexual maturation. The two leads have excellent chemistry and Emily Perkins delivers a truly memorable, amazing performance has the mousish younger sister. The werewolf scenes are bloody and intense; not to surprisingly convincing for a low budget indie horror film. Taut pacing, a smart screenplay with sharp, witty diolouge and solid direction round out the films virtues; but really its the excellent characterization that makes the movie so damn good. Ginger Snaps is a must see!

Who doesn’t like Ginger Snaps. it’s just a really clever, fun take on the whole werewolf mythos mixed in with some dark humor and teenage development. Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle shine and have great chemistry as the two sisters dealing with the infection of lycanthropy. Instead of sticking to generic genre cliches Fawcett takes the material in a completely fresh and engaging direction making it feel unique and innovative. Although far better than it should be Ginger Snaps ultimately but not overpoweringly suffers from some muted budget restrictions and amateur execution.

In a nutshell excellent movie, worth watching a 2nd time or recommending it to others.

Ginger Snaps is arguably one of the best american made werewolf movies to have come out in some time. Making do with a small budget, Ginger Snaps delivers on all aspects of the game. You couldn’t have found two better people, to have played the part of these emo sisters. Ginger makes being a werewolf hot and that’s hard to do (with the whole, hair and tail thing).
