6 Essential Zombie Movies!!!

Not that you asked, but I probably don’t like the zombie genre as much as a lot of you. For starters, I feel like its over saturated. You can’t go more than a month without another one hitting the direct-to-DVD/VOD market. I also don’t find them particularly compelling as creatures. They lack personality and, fast or slow, they’re cognitively… stupid. I also feel like a lot of filmmakers latch onto them because of their popularity, not because they’re particularly engaged by them. In the process they forget that the most compelling part of this sub genre isn’t the creatures – it’s usually the survivors and their response to the undead horde. READ MORE

Horror Education of the Week: ‘Dawn of the Dead’

“These creatures are nothing but pure, motorized instinct. We must not be lulled by the concept that these are our family members or our friends. They are not. They will not respond to such emotions. They must be destroyed on sight!” READ MORE

Take The Expanded Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! How Do You Rank Now?

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). READ MORE

Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre. READ MORE

Special Feature: ‘Scream 4,’ Slicing Into New Rules & Conventions

In the decade-plus period of time that has passed since the release of Scream 3, there’s no doubt that the horror landscape has changed significantly. In the intervening years we’ve witnessed the rise of the torture porn craze, seen a resurgence in “found footage”/shaky-cam horror, and watched helplessly as a seemingly unyielding series of remakes cluttered up our local multiplexes. A Visit to the Set of ‘The Thing’ Prequel: Part 1

Back in May, Bloody-Disgusting reporter Chris Eggertsen visited the Toronto set of Universal’s The Thing prequel and was given the opportunity to interview some of the key players involved with the film, as well as getting a look at several key sets and some of the practical effects models that will be featured in the finished product. See inside for Part 1 of his set visit coverage, including interviews with producer Marc Abraham and star Mary Elizabeth Winstead! Topics covered include the amount of practical vs. CGI effects utilized in the movie, the challenges of getting the studio onboard for a prequel as opposed to a remake, and John Carpenter’s feelings on the project, which is being shot without his involvement. WIN a Copy of Adam Green’s ‘Frozen’ on Blu-ray

For millions of people all over the world, winter time means skiing, snowboarding and frolicking in the snow. Blu-ray Review: Anchor Bay’s ‘The Crazies’ Remake

I dug it in theaters, and I dug it again at home. While it’s not going to reinvent the genre, Breck Eisner’s update of George Romero’s (also imperfect) The Crazies is, like the Dawn of the Dead remake, an action movie version of the original horror tale, with much of the social commentary stripped to the bone in favor of scares (many of which are effective) and big action sequences. Two different approaches to the same story, both with merit. (more…) READ MORE

OMFG of the Day: Old Negatives Discovered from ‘Dawn of the Dead’ Shoot!

Being an avid horror fan there’s nothing more special than the discovery of long-lost “artifacts”. We were contacted today by photographer Richard Burke who writes in with info on new behind-the-scenes photography from the set of George A. Romero’s 1978 Dawn of the Dead! “My name is Richard Burke and in 1978 I had a small photography studio in Pittsburgh. I was assigned to take pictures of the filming of the Dawn of the Dead by Pittsburgh Magazine and recently I rediscovered the old negatives and have been scanning them. Most of them have never been seen. I have been posting the better images to my commercial site. The others I have been posting to my blog.” Take a peak at a young Romero and Tom Savini below. Bizarre News From Cannes: Romero Remaking Argento’s ‘Deep Red’ in 3-D

Oh the surprises of Cannes — and this one is a doozy. Get ready for Deep Red in 3D — not by Dario Argento but from zombie icon George A. Romero. Word has it that Romero is in advanced negotiations to helm a completely unnecessary stereoscopic remake in English of Argento’s cult classic. The 1975 masterpiece Deep Red, about a string of supernatural splatter murders, is considered Argento’s gem giallo and the film that established his international standing. Claudio Argento, who is Dario’s brother and regular producer, has penned the screenplay for Romero’s redo. Plan is to start shooting this fall in Canada. Though Dario Argento and George Romero go back a long way — he collaborated with Romero on zombie classic Dawn of the Dead, on which he has producer credit, and they also co-directed Two Evil Eyes in 1990 — Dario Argento will not be involved in Romero’s remake in any guise. This news makes me a little sick to my stomach, you? (more…) READ MORE

Magnet Releasing Scores US Rights to George Romero’s ‘Survival of the Dead’!

The Wagner/Cuban Companies’ Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired US rights to George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead, the latest in the legendary and beloved series of zombie films which bowed at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals earlier this year. Romero, one of the most influential and respected horror auteurs of all time, has created a new, terrifying vision that combines viscerally gory undead action with biting social commentary and a return to the black humor and playfulness of his seminal film, Dawn of the Dead. Magnet will release the film as part of its Ultra VOD program this spring, debuting it on VOD platforms nationwide a month before its theatrical release. (more…) READ MORE
