Blu-ray Review: ‘Predators’

Making a sequel to a highly successful film – especially decades after the original – is among the hardest things a director and creative crew can be tasked with. Not only does the follow-up have to capture the tone and attitude of its predecessor, but it also has to successfully introduce a slew of new ideas that expands the mythology of the series without creating anything that contradicts what came before it (Highlander 2, I’m looking at you). The most noticeable exception to this rule is James Cameron, who has successfully taken horror films like Alien and The Terminator – I know some people will disagree, but I always considered the Arnie classic to be a slasher/thriller – and successfully turned their sequels into epic sci-fi/action hybrids. Predators attempts the same formula of changing genres, and it does indeed introduce new mythology and ideas, but it oversaturates itself with them, and because of that and the various tweaks made to Robert Rodriguez’s original spec script over the years, the sum is not as great as its parts. Halloween Treat #2: Watch Greg Nicotero’s ‘United Monster Talent’ Short

“The Walking Dead”‘s Special FX Make-Up Designer Greg Nicotero unquestionably knows his zombies. One look at the photos of his undead creations for the AMC series is proof enough of that. But Nicotero also knows his werewolves, his mummies and his creatures from the Black Lagoon. Need proof on that count, too? Check out his his short film, “The United Monster Talent Agency,” a faux promo for a fictional Hollywood agency representing monsters from Universal Studios circa 1950s. The short film features guest appearances by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel), Dana Gould (“The Simpsons”), Robert Rodriguez (Machete) and “The Walking Dead”‘s own Executive Producer and Director Frank Darabont (who fittingly plays a director). Where else would you see what Frankenstein’s monster and The Invisible Man do when the camera’s aren’t rolling? (more…) READ MORE

New Review: Touchstone’s ‘The Invisible’ Remake a Disaster?

One of my favorite indie films in 2004 was the Swedish horror-drama The Invisible, which was announced to be remade by early 2005. Today we added our review of Touchstone Pictures’ remake here, which Horrorholic calls, “a disaster. The Invisible is a supernatural thriller about a writer who finds himself trapped between the world of the living and the dead-completely invisible to the living. First Look at Goyer’s ‘The Invisible’ One Sheet

One of the best films I saw two years ago was the Swedish pic Invisible, which played at the prestigious Screamfest horror film festival. The film won multiple awards and a remake was quickly underway. Directed by David Goyer, The Invisible is on its way to theaters January 26th and today the poster found its way online. The remake is about two young teens whose real selves are invisible to others. One teen’s untimely death renders him literally invisible. The other is metaphorically invisible due to the neglect she’s endured since the death of her mother. (more…) READ MORE
