this movie is awesome! kinda corny plot but amazing gore, tons of nudity, and funny ass dialoge! it goes back to the roots of 1980′s American horror flicks and this is one of the best!!

I found Hatchet to be well short of the mark. Other than some nice, gory deaths, there was nothing in this film to hold up interest. Shonky acting, laugh-free ‘comedy’, and a hackneyed plot.
My wife, who is normally a big fan of 80′s style slasher flicks summed it up brilliantly:

‘I’d rather get raped by Bob Saget than watch that again’

Brilliant funny and intelligent, ive never been a fan of comedy in horror movies, but in this movie it just works end of. i just loved it, it had the stamp of somebody who was a true fan of the genre, one of the best true horrors ive seen in years, oh and the kills and gore in it are truly fantastic but dont descend into the stupidity and torture porn of Hostel and Saw, which i thought was fantastic brilliant brilliant brilliant movie, must see for every horror fan

Great film for gore comedy fans.I loved it’s no holds barred carnage.Kane Hodder was great as Crowley.Plus it’s cool to see horror icons in small cameos.I’t won’t win any awards for acting but it’s scooby doo gang meets backwoods killer vibe is why it’s destined to be a cult classic.

to say that those who rate this movie low, must not be horror fans (because they just dont get it) is bullshit.
i find it hard to describe the disappointment that resulted because of this movie. i did expect the 80′s vibe which i was excited for because i love friday the 13th and sleepaway camp and all those…but it DID NOT work for this movie in any way. it just felt stupid and like it was TRYING to be an 80′s film. of course the filmmakers were trying for that but the way they went about contrasted awfully with what resulted. the gore is fun and cool but barely saves the film. the nudity, im sorry but who cared. im proud to say that a horror movie does not need nudity to be awesome and really is always unneccesary, pretty much. but it is in friday the 13th and sleepaway camps and all those and for every reason it worked. in this it didnt feel random or sexy, it was just an awful plot device that also failed at a character development. i wasnt at one point rooting for any of the characters, which i found myself doing in real 80′s movies. in the end i question if this movie was actually honestly trying to be an homage to the good ol’ days of horror, or if they just made a shitty film and decided to call it an homage as a cop out….my vote goes to number 2.

I am STILL to this day trying to figure out what there was to like about this er, um film!!?! The IMDB web page on this film warns you of a “spoiler” alert, and I can’t figure out what was being spoiled..Look, films are subjective I admit, but what possible reason is there to recommend this movie? Acting? Script? Characterization? F/X? Can’t be the plot(?). Maybe this is one of those films that 10 or 15 years from now we will look at as CAMP and that what was what everybody involved wanted you to believe. And I am a fan of “campy” movies, but that only works if you’re not trying to take yourself too seriously…

The death scenes are just so perfect and this movie contains one of the great decapitation scenes of all time. I recommend this movie to all slasher fans, and it has great cameos by Robert Englund and Tony Todd, and of course, Kane Hodder is the killer. An easy 8/10

Today they don’t have anymore ideas for films, so they make a bunch of PG-13 crap and remakes, but HATCHET was a brand new slasher flick with a brand new story and some of the most awesome kills I have seen in a slasher movie! I think this movie could represent the return of TRUE horror! THIS is what a horror movie should look like!

    Hatchet- 2007

Good Parts- some very well done gore effects, pretty good acting, some very funny parts, creative kills, very creepy setting, very well paced

Bad Parts- can be too dark at times, some gore effects are very fake looking (ripped off arms? they’re clearly under his shirt :O ), plot seems very generic and manufactured

Overall a very entertaining and gory film that will deliever some amazing kills but is plagued by an uncreative plot

    7/10

It’s a decent (supernatural?) slasher that kinda drags on a bit in the beginning and ends with a blood drenched finale. It had some decent acting and pretty poor effects. But it was funny and gorey and a decent way to kill time. Don’t watch this if you want a smart psychological thriller. Watch it with this in mind you’ll laugh, you’ll cringe and you’ll laugh some more.

A delightful little slasher film with some good jump scenes and plenty of gore. mixes all the right ingredients: bad humour, societal criticism,stereotype-wary charactors,i-need-somebody-anybody-its-the-end-of-the-world romance, and a gross and unnaturally strong villian that has a disturbing urban legend background. To top it off its compulsively re-watchable and fun! YAY!

Why the hell do people like this lame movie? You either have to be topped full of drugs, or drunk out of your skull to like this. This is the worst horror movie I have ever seen in my life. Infact, I don’t give it a score, I give it 0. Hatchet is a horrible, badly acted, corny American “horror” with stupid jokes and horrible special effects with obvious fake blood. Stupid sets that are obviously in a studio, horrible moster effects and a terrible set of cast members. This is honestly, the worst movie ever made. Hatchet is just lame.

AMAZING AND FUN gore effects…especially when he pops the womans head like a pez dispenser. great stuff. OH and mercedes mcnab (harmony from buffy) is one of the leads. whats not to love?

my new all-time favourite serial killer horror flick. why? i don’t know, i just do.

it features an all-star cast like Kane Hodder from ‘Friday The 13th’, Robert Englund from ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ and much more.

the only problem i had was that serial killer flicks were in the 60s, 70s and 80s, and are remade today. by creating an original slasher film in the times that its yesterday’s news unless a slasher’s remade, they’ve just wasted films and imagination, because it’s the same thing.

an innocent person has a bizarre back story, they come back from the dead to kill people who trespass on their grave or the people they fell victim to in the first place.

still, this has become my all time fav.

Slasher films have made a comeback, lackluster as most of the new ones may be. Theaters are overrun by remakes of movies that A. Didn’t need to be remade, or B. Simply weren’t good enough to deserve a remake. Hatchet broke the cycle of monotony, at least. The story behind the slasher was pretty tragic and the kills were painstakingly gory. The plot is pretty average, but offers a few laughs along the way. Just don’t try to take this movie too seriously, it’s just gory, violent fun. I would recommend this movie to anyone who’s just looking for a nostalgic walk down slasher memory lane, as the movie is classic in it’s feel and atmosphere.
Cameos from Robert Englund and Tony Todd grace this flick with a few extra laughs, and the movie is simply enjoyable. If you’re looking for the next movie to inspire nightmares, look elsewhere. There’s little chills to be had from Hatchet. But if you just want to sit around and watch something entertaining, give Hatchet a try.

a little overhyped is what comes to mind after viewing this. adam green is really nothing special and neither is the movie. the kills are the only thing saving this film, and had it not been this bloody, i guarantee nobody would’ve given 2 shits about it. the story itself is unoriginal and somewhat boring. what i hated was that it felt like a comedy but with a couple serious moments and outrageous gore. i thought this was gonna be a straight up horror film, but it definitely isn’t, it is a comedy. the score was stupid too, i hated all the goofy music in some scenes, like the bus ride and the character escaping the sinking boat.

The best horror, of any variety, is more then great gore gags. Paying homage to old-school horror is no excuse for lack of originality. Hatchet is a decent go for first-time-director Adam Green, but ultimately is over-hyped, straight-to-DVD fare.

I had a really fun time watching this movie, very much like when I watched Dead Snow. Hatchet is a fun, cheesey film designed to tribute the original 80′s horror films and it does a damn good job!

The kills in Hatchet are easily some of the goriest kills since Inside, only more over the top! This really adds to how fun the film is, just leaving you hungry for more to see how the next death will turn out. These are bloody and really sick kills which will probably excite most people like me.

Hatchet is also really funny, which is what I like, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the horror, which it doesn’t, it executes the laughs and scares fairly evenly like Severence. It just makes the film funner having funny dialogue before the horror than the normal boring dialogue.

Overall I really enjoyed this, it’s not oscar worthy by any means but it is a masterpiece in its own right.

This was very over hyped as the reviews below me mentioned. Of course it didn’t meet those expectations for me, but its still a pretty good no holds barred, ol skool horror movie. It cuts through all the bullshit that most horror movies have now-a-days. Kane Hodder(Jason) is brutal as usual. But what really bothered me was the ending, it was too sudden for me. I hope the sequel is as good as people are saying it is. Overall, a gorehound wouldn’t think twice about adding this to his DVD collection. Definitely worth at lest one viewing from any horror fan.

Pretty meh. Not much to this movie.
    THE BAD:
The lighting blows… and the music is terrible. The movie has no personality whatsoever. A movie set in the bayou should be oozing with creepy cinematography and general eerieness… but this movie had none of that. The only locations we get are some streets… some woods… a shed… and graveyard. Everything looks alarmingly bland. Also some of the conversations feel weirdly paced… I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but some of the humor was desperately forced and timing was just off.

    THE GOOD
The gore is awesome… the head rip/hatchet to chest scene being a standout. Great to see some old school practical effects. I also dug the actors in the movie… and while none of them really stood out… they all were pretty good. Also the horror cameos rock.

Overall this movie could have been amazing… an old school slasher set in the bayou with a deformed Kane Hodder ripping shit up? What’s not to like? Unfortunately the presentation was really lackluster and uninteresting… with awesome gore just barely saving us from the bland.. well… everything else. Hugely overhyped… give this a look for a fun time… but keep your expectations in check.

THIS MOVIE WAS OKAY, BUT NOTHING TO GO CRAZY OVER. Sure, there were some funny lines to make you laugh. But equally there were lots of horrible lines, horrible acting (the candyman dude is just a bad, bad actor), and just horribly unrealistic situations (those 2 girls with the chubby pervert? not gonna happen folks!) The monster was not very scary looking, but I did enjoy some of the gory killing scenes. I did love how the movie ended right in the middle of an action sequence: left lots of questions & a huge gap for the sequel. So, in all, this movie is decent…but I personally don’t believe it deserves all the hoopla & cheers that’s it’s received. It’s average – and that’s it!

    Hatchet
    *May Contain Peanuts & Spoilers*

My next three reviews will focus on the extremely talented young writer/director Adam Green. Adam is apart of a group of New England born and bred filmmakers who seem to be taking the independent horror genre by storm. Guys like Eli Roth, Paul Solet, Joel David Moore and others have been involved in some of the best horror movies in years. These filmmakers are movie fanatics in there own right and create films with their fan base in mind. Adam Green’s breakout hit was the 2006 slasher spectacle “Hatchet” that tells the story of Victor Crowley, a viciously deformed killer that stalks the New Orleans bayou.

For his first big film Green was able to corral a horror director’s dream of a cast. Robert Englund of Freddy Krueger fame opens the movie, playing an alligator hunter, who is out with his son when the run into some trouble with Victor. Kane Hodder, who was “Jason” in a handful of the Friday the 13th movies, plays Victor Crowley. He also doubles as Victor’s father in a flashback. Horror icon Tony Todd of “Candyman” fame also has a cameo as Reverend Zombie.

The plot of “Hatchet” follows a bunch of college aged kids at Mardi Gras. Ben, played by Joel David Moore gets sick of all the drunken debauchery around him and leaves the group with one his best friends Marcus coming along. Looking for some cheap thrills they board a pontoon boat with an eclectic group of people for a haunted swamp tour of the bayou.

Although the story of Victor Crowley and the woods setting is quite similar to Jason and the Friday movies, Green does do his best to differentiate then. There are homage’s to other classic horror films that only fans will recognize. A line here a scene there, its all pretty subtle. Green knows his audience and fan base well because he is one of them. The kills and gore effect are pretty spectacular, so big props go out to the make-up and effects departments. With a total budget of only a million and a half they defiantly seem to get their money’s worth.

This is definitely a better than average entry into the vast horror market and sees the birth of two new horror icons to look forward to seeing more of, Adam Green and Victor Crowley. While Hatchet 2 was filmed earlier this year and made it onto a few theatres a DVD release date has not yet been set.

“Hatchet” is a horror-comedy that is funny because it knows what its doing, and it does it without being gross, revolting, or lacking in appeal. If you like horror films, then this homage will not dissapoint.

In some ways, “Hatchet” skewers the slasher film. In other ways, it honors it. I admire the thing either way.

Adam Green, the film’s director, is talented; and Victor Crowly is an interesting new horror villain. I won’t say he’s iconic; because what’s “iconic”. But I do admire the sense of humor that accompanies this film, and it appeals to me as few horror comedies- especially the ones that everyone seems to praise- can’t.

Still riding the horror train here, I decided to check this one out because I’ve heard good things about it. I read on the cover, “It’s not a sequel, a remake, or based on a Japanese one. I immediately smiled and grabbed it. Beneath the axe that was plastered on the poster it read Old School American Horror. I believe Adam Green achieved what he wanted to, give us a more modern day horror film that was also a throw back to the likes of Jason Vorheese or Freddy Krueger. I do think the film thinks a little too highly of itself in that regard, but I can’t deny that I had a bloody good time watching this piece.

We have our character at a spring break party in New Orleans, one of them ain’t feeling the good vibes and decides to go on this haunted swamp tour to cheer up, he’s morose like that. One of his friends decides to go with him so he is not alone. They meet a bunch of other people that are going on this haunted swamp tour as well, but things don’t go according to plan when the boat hits a rock and begins to sink. Of course things go from bad to worse when the old tale of Victor Crowley that was apart of the tour, is actually true. The tourists find themselves trying to survive the superhuman, deformed and blood thirsty Victor Crowley.

I give Green some props for giving us an actual horror film that feel like it belongs in the same grouping as Friday the 13th, a film that heavily inspired this one. The menace, known as Victor Crowley is indeed, in the words of Arnold, “One Ugly Mother Fuc…you know. The story goes like this, he was born deformed and his father decided to keep him out of public, alone out in the swamp, just the two of them. One Halloween night, a bunch of kids decide to terrorize Crowley by throwing firecrackers at his cabin, bad idea since the cabin catches on fire. His father comes home to a burning house and he grabs an axe to break down the door. Another bad move, since Victor is pushing up against the door from the inside. Axe to the face. The legend goes on to say that Victor Crowley is stuck in that night, his spirit in human form, going on a killing rampage.

The film is graphic, lots of blood and limbs being ripped apart. There are quick cuts of buckets of blood just hitting the walls. If you love that type of stuff, this is the film for you. It’s full of cheesy dialogue, stupid characters and clichéd horror elements. You have your drugs, sex and deaths all rolled into one neat little package. Horror fans will also get a nice giggle here and there when they see some horror legends lending their talents to this film. Tony “Candyman” Todd, Kane “Jason” Hodder and Robert “Freddy” Englund. Green knows where he is grabbing his inspirations from and it’s nice to see him acknowledge it. Even the last scene seems straight out of the original Friday the 13th.

The film is not scary, it seems more like a comedy. The dialogue is very sitcom like and Victor Crowley never matches the vibes of Jason or Michael. The guy doesn’t have that iconic feel to him and I predict that years from now we won’t even remember who he is, but we will still remember Jason. The backstory to him is just too thin and while he does a great job at killing people, it’s not enough to make it memorable. Hatchet is definitely a horror comedy, poking fun at the genre itself here and there.

I look forward to the sequel, which will probably suck. This is a film for fans of the genre, hence the generous rating.

“Hatchet” is so over-the-top gory that it actually makes the more violent scenes easier to watch. A clever, funny script mixes a great deal of horror and comedy and it works very well.

    Badass B movie slasher flick.

What stands out in this movie is the Villain / Monster and the crazy gore effects and death sequences.

    Highly recommended for slasher fans.

I am not one to make a quick decision, but this film just sucked. I really feel bad for washed up horror icons, but not bad enough to pretend this movie was any good. two thumbs down!!

This film is awesome! Its fun has some good comedy and the special FX stuck to prosthetics instead of CGI making it all the more better. The kills are wicked gruesome and the acting isn’t bad at all.

But of course most people jump to the conclusion that its trying too hard to be the next horror film iconic slasher and that it fails in all three ways. Yes, these days its hard to be like Jason, Freddy, or Micheal but to me, they aren’t trying as much as they are just doing and just happen to be succeeding.

This film has cameos by Robert Englund and the killer, Victor Crowley, is played by Kane Hodder. Who both play excellent roles and plays them to their best.

This movie is great and definitely one to add to your collection when your friends come over and are looking for a fun horrific good time. It makes me laugh every time when someone gives it a bad review because its a “horror movie icon that’s washed up and cant/ didn’t make it” It’s not a commercial success and that’s the point and they know that like most people don’t.

I love this movie. Great balance of humor and horror. Awesome homage to the old school 80′s slashers, especially Friday the 13th. Recommended for any horror fan. There is one really incredible kill in this movie that blew me away. I’m sure you will know which one it is….

I just rewatched this movie a while ago: Lots of blood, pretty funny storyline, okay acting, but an overall good movie.

Official Score: 4 / 5
