BEST… DATE-MOVIE… EVER. Yeah, seriously though, one of the most harrowing films I have ever seen. I think Wes Craven was trying to make the most uncomfortable movie in the history of cinema. For the first hour it doesn’t even feel like you’re watching a movie. I would liken it more to a snuff film, or a pseudo-documentary about really, really sick people. ‘Last House on the Left’ is kind of a MUST for fans of horror. You have to see where Craven and Cunningham came from to appreciate what they eventually evolved into. This film is to be appreciated more as a SHOCKER than anything else. I will only see the film again to show it to some wide-eyed film buff who has no idea what they’re about to get themselves into. I guess that makes me part of the phenomenon. I just want to shock people with it.
Brutal but powerful. A little comic bookish at some times but necessary to relieve you from some of the shock you will see. If you want to be shocked and disturbed this is for you. It is also one of the best horror movies out there
Fantasitic vengence film. I found it hard watching it, I was angery and shocked at the same time. But it’s like being on a good roller coaster ride, you know the ride will be dificult emotionally, but you just can’t help but go through with it because you’ve heard about it and it looks scary. And at the end you will never forget the ride ever.

The brutal scenes are powerful and you are completely disgusted, but when it comes back to them x 10, you feel justice has been served, but doesn’t that make you as sick as them?, it left me thinking, “would i do the same?”. It really does ask you that question, “when does violence become accepted to you ” if you understand what i mean. Like there’s so much violence, how can YOU justify brutal vengence?. Never the less, you know when it’s a good film when you can’t get it out of your head.
But it’s a cult classic and I think the remake will be interesting to see as I don’t think it’ll be easy to remake. You need balls to remake this the same way, it’ll really get under peoples skin. It’s an honest and brave film.
Not as shocking, thrilling or gory as I had expected after all the praise. Wes Craven went on to bigger and (thankfully) better things, and it’s just a shame he had to start here to springboard him up to them.
Strangely filmed, poorly acted, and terribly dubbed, yet somehow still successful in drawing the viewer into the story.
The acting is bad, really bad. Dead-characters-move-bad.
The camera work is also frustrating. single scenes are cut into chunks and spliced between others, presumably to emphasize the immediacy of the events. It goes back and forth like that a lot, cutting between completely different moods and atmospheres and totally confusing me in the process. Girls get raped and then an instant later bumbling cops fall off a chicken truck for laughs. It’s confusing because you can’t figure out what mood you’re supposed to be in.
After all these problems (and some more) I still liked this movie. It has a lot of well laid plans, build up that actually leads to payoff, and some interesting ideas you won’t see coming. You might even be shocked a couple of times. I wish I could have been there to see this when it premiered. The audience must have flipped out over a couple disturbing, even by today’s standards, moments.
More entertaining than credible. It’s no Texas Chainsaw, but I can see why it’s considered a classic.
Yeah it was bad acting but it was his first film which stirred up some much controversy. It was disturbing but good when the kidnappers got what they deserved. I think the remake will be 10x better because there is so much more that can be done with it and great actors can portray the originals.
Remakes of Hills have eyes are better than the originals, so he has proven he can remake a movie.

i like this movie cause it is a classic. it has inspired alot of other horror films good and bad. remeber this came out two years before The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I found the entire movie fun and feel-good, and I think that’s what made the movie for me. Craven NAILED the 70′s, and I think this is the perfect example of a generational movie. It’s sad more generational movies like this aren’t made in our time.
The brutal kills would have been much more effective if they were shown on screen, but I understand in the time they wouldn’t have been allowed. However, the ideas themselves are a lot more unnerving than “I’ve seen that a hundred times” gore like you get in movies like The Midnight Meat Train.
If not for Alien, I think I would call this the definitive horror film of its decade.
I’m not sure what else to say. It’s just a freaking fun movie that defies almost all the clichés of the typical kidnapping/vengeance movie, as well as keeping characters a lot more interesting than the copy/paste of most horror today.
Forget The Mist of The Decent or whatever typical horror you plan on renting, get this.
Just saw this baby for the first time this morning before I went to work. For some reason, this was just one of those films that I avoided seeing for a long time as I didn’t want to be disappointed after all of the wonderful reviews I’ve heard about it. To tell the truth I’m not a huge Craven fan. I think most of his stuff is over-rated. This however did surprise me, and I think BD nailed it when said that it isn’t a gorefest, but just deeply disturbing. Huge contrast between serene images and fun-loving music over brutal rape scenes and murders. Reminds me of Ravenous a bit. Anyway, acting was as expected, pretty unrealistic, but that’s horror for you and I pretty much loved every part of this one, I’ll buy this one eventually to add to my collection. Try it out.

Vicious, nasty and downright realistic feeling is the debut film by wes craven who makes a controversial film that put him on the map.
This movie was very different than the horror movies I am used to. The use of almost happy music in a scene where it seemed out of place was absolutely brilliant. It added to the sick and twisted atmosphere of what was happening. It wasn’t the best horror movie I have seen, but I’ll give it a solid 7.

This is wonderful horror film because it takes away the audience’s ability to cheer for the demise of the heroines. People call it boring, and maybe by today’s standards (and the fact that TV has left most people with the attention span of a two-year-old) it is, but it still packs a punch. How many films dare to go where it does? Very few. And it utilized a chainsaw a whole year before The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don’t understand why a remake is being made, especially when the elements of the story that made it so memorable are apparently being removed. Unless it somehow proves to be a good remake, I say the odds are one out of ten, I hope it falls by the wayside and shows Hollywood that fan want original horror, not remakes that cheapen their predecessors.

One of the original ‘nasties’ to come out of the 70′s along side TCM and Wes Cravens first feature. LHOTL is a gritty ,brutal film that definitely pushed the boundaries for it’s time. No other film made around the same era showed brutal rape and murder the way this film did. Sure ,in this age of ‘torture porn’ this may seem tame but the scenes of violence are some of the most realistic captured on film. You feel for the victims as they are put through hell for no reason at all. These girls are pursued, humiliated , raped and murdered and the effect is one of disgust.When the tables turn on their attackers you’ll feel justice has been served. A bit slow at times but every person who calls themselves a horror fans need to see this at least once. Watch it before the clearly watered down slick remake arrives
One of the best horror movies ever made. Though it was made in the 70′s, a time for cheesy horror movies, this has a special touch of realism to the villians of the film.The girls are sympathic, as are the killers sometimes, who do not posess superhuman strength, but are merely a gang who win in an unfair contest by numbers.It seems realistic, especially krug’s sons guilt about the whole thing. The parents vigilance seems one of the most deserved punishments ever, but still you can’t bear to see what happens to the villians, but can’t look away. However, this film is not for classy filmgoers who enjoy something polished and cut for them. This is raw.

The movie was very simple in premise. 2 girls went to concert, tried to be oversmart, got raped and eventually killed, Killers took refuge with girls parents and when parents came to know that these guys killed their daughter they took revenge. The direction looked like we are watching a documentary film which added to realism and considering it was early 70′s, this movie was brutal (although it is nothing as compared to torture porn or gory movies today).
Action was realistic (but obviously not that good as it was still early 70′s and say as you may .. fact remains action sequences are far superior to early days).
Use of almost happy music at times where music should have been intimidating is a let down for me. I personally feel that music director wasn’t talented enough or he didn’t know what he was doing.
Also, surprisingly where everybody feels bad for Mari, I feel bad for Phylis. Contrast the 2 girls’ personality … When they were trapped in woods Phylis made a run for it but obviously she didn’t know where she was otherwise she might have escaped. On the other hand, Mari knew exactly where they were ie very near her house. All she had to do wad to make a run for it but instead she did nothing. She had 2 chances but she blew it. Now come on what’s the worst that could have happened.
The movie was good considering the year it was made in but I really hope remake won’t repeat the same mistakes as the original did.
Fans of modern gore can easily give it a skip but total horror buffs need to have a look.
How did this become a classic??? It was stupid…not even scary, wasn’t very good at all….I sure hope the remake is better…
The first time I watched this movie I thought it was a snuff film and at first thought I picked up the wrong movie but by the end of the movie I was in love. plus, the marketing for the movie was genious, “Just tell yourself its just a movie” Maybe because I’m a woman, but I thought the scene in the woods was horrific because watching the news and hearing about two young girls getting raped and murdered is much different than seeing it infornt of you. Especially for its time, this movie was intense. Once the family realizes that it was their guests that kiled their daughter they get revenge. I think that’s why the movie is so appealing becuase what family wouldn’t want to take the law into their owns hands and take revenge on their daughter’s killers. Although the movie doesn’t have tons of blood and or gore it provides a sadistic rape and murder scene with some bitter-sweet revenge. Craven was in his prime when he made this movie and it shows with a movie that makes you feel dirty for just watching it.
This movie was pretty good. It pretty much worked because the convicts were depraved and sick in a believable way. I didn’t really buy the parents revenge attempts though so it was hit and miss. I did however absolutely love all the upbeat soundtrack that was constantly playing even when terrible things were happening. That was great.
Hope the remake is just as good.

A gritty, raw, in your face flick. It’s a scenerio that feels “extremely real”. These are the type of villians that you could very easily meet in real life. That’s what gives this film a tremendous sense of realism. I’m a single parent with a little girl, & this film affects me a lot differently now when I watch it. I tend to watch this one & I Spit on Your Grave, together. It makes you pay close attention to what’s going on around you when you’re in public. Highly recommended!!! fuckin gritty dirty and almost unwatchable at times this movie realy hit a nerve and still does to this day,i would call this cravens masterwork….amazing movie!!!

Watched this last night, thought I’d give it a go before giving the remake one. It lives up to every review posted on here. Disturbing throughout, with complete satisfaction – if you can make it to the end.
8/10 for me.
This wasn’t really that good… Now I do give this ALOT of credit for being released in 72, but the music is ridiculous and releases any tension that could be mustered from the film, the cops are laughable, something this kind of movie needs to be ENTIRELY without. The remake is ALOT better than this movie. The only things that this movie did better than the remake are the death of Phyllis (Paige) and the fact that Mari dies. other than that, this movie kind of… well, it was a let down to say the least.
I saw it a while back ago when I heard they were remaking it, just to check it out, like I do with all the other remakes. I actually thought this movie was good and effective. Did I like it better than the Remake, not at all. But it will always have a special place in me, knowing that someone had the balls to make a movie like this.
It’s a hurtful watch. It was only a matter of time before someone stuck their dirty PG-13 hands on the movie. And what do ya’ know. A remake. But it stands no chance to the stuff this movie injected you with..the stuff called a dirty in your face look at the disgusting reality of our world. Not for the weak watchers..that’s what the remake is for.
What a sucker punch to the gut this movie packs. It’s crosses that line into utterly disturbing territory and thus can’t really be enjoyed but boy does it succeed at being terrifying.
My sister and i went to go see this movie. At some scenes i thought i was going to get sick and i do have a heavy stomach but some scenes were just unbearable. It was sick, twisted and scary…one of hte best films i have seen in a LONG time. This movie is worth seeing.

This movie was amazing. Now lets settle one thing right now. This is NOT a rape movie like some retards claim it to be. The movie was all based in realistic scenarios on what would actually happen. Great acting and they didn’t overdue the gore. The ending might be a bit over the top but i think it was the cherry ontop to an awesome thrill ride!
Mmmmm having heard about this film for years, I finally got round to watching it last year. Now I love an old classic as much as the next man, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead, Hills Have Eyes etc etc all made relatively cheaply but able to hold the viewers attention. This seemed more like some kind of student film made with friends on order to pass a college course!! The acting was awful, as was the dialogue. Not quite sure how it has become a so called classic horror film, as there was little suspense or horror, other than the overall premise. One to forget in a hurry.
Now we all know Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes, Scream) but this is where he got his start. Making a movie that is twisted, disturbing, and hard to watch and also hard to look away at the same time.
I just want to start off with saying David Hess is awesome!
The rape scene in this movie is much more disturbing and a hell of a lot more realistic than that so called hardcore rape scene in the remake LHOTL 2009, that was so overhyped lol. You really start to like the characters and hate the villians in this movie and they don’t call them rape revenge movies for nothing, the girl that David Hess and his group kill just so happens to be with her parents. The killers room up with the parents to stay the night, without either knowing the girl and parents are related, and the parents eventually find out and go and seek their revenge.
This movie was a video nasty and for good reason, it looks pretty f***ing realistic if you ask me. Watch this movie if you think you can stand it, but if you’ve seen many explotation films than this really isn’t that bad, but if your new to rape revenge or explotation this is a good start, with a classic that isn’t too over the top in the explotation genre. I give this movie an 8/10!

This Movie is great. Disturbing & Violent for its time!
All I have to say is that this movie is extremely overated! The story is good, but the movie is slow, and the kills suck!People actually call this “extreme gore”!?WTF! Multiple stabbings with a little knife is NOT gory![Spoiler] When the father is having is revenge with a chainsaw, we only see him swinging the chainsaw! We don’t even see the chainsaw go through the guy!Anyways, this movie is crap. Good story, bad movie.
A cold, brutal & disturbing movie.
Disturbing & nasty. You feel like taking a shower to clean yourself after watching it. The film did drag in parts and it is extremly low budget. But still it did not entertain. It was hard to watch at times.

I love Wes Craven, really, but it was slow and unsuprising. Even for its time, it was only slightly more disturbing than expected.
The music choice is so incredible [as in, its NOT credible], that I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be funny or not.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a staple horror movie, and its not particularly bad, but for all the hype is recieves, I was entirely underwhelmed.
It was okay. The camera work somehow added to the disturbing scenes. But this is Wes Craven’s first so rent it.
This movie confused me. There weren’t a lot of establishing shots (except of boobies), so pretty much it seemed like the main character lived in a mailbox. Maybe they should have called this movie The Last Mailbox on the Left. Wes Craven really let me down because he never took the obvious train straight to Obviousville and used the title of the movie anywhere in the movie. This was the perfect movie to do that in! I waited the entire film for someone to say, “Hey man, don’t kill me, I live right over there. You know, in the last house on the left,” or “Let’s go down to the last house on the left and harass some squares, man.” Oh well, I guess it’s still a better title than You Used to Keep Your Breasts in a Prison, Mom. Speaking of dialog, Craven wrote some strange stuff. Sometimes juvenile, sometimes strangely subversive, and sometimes just plain strange. I applaud him for turning his back on the Fundamentalist Christian Church and selling his soul to the devil (by which I of course mean the studios, man). I’d give this a higher rating on account of its having been made in the seventies, but that’s no excuse! I’ve seen some pretty well crafted movies made by cavemen, so I know what I’m talking about.
The Last House On The Left is truly disturbing and a milestone in horror history. It was brutally terryfying. Only two things I have a problem with. The music was completely off at some parts of the movie. and the acting, at parts was laughable. Other than that, it was disgusting and brutal. All In All, The Last House On The Left was one of the most brutal horror movies I have ever seen and it was disturbing to watch which I consider a truly great horror movie.
Great movie banned here for 37s years I don’t see why it really isn’t bad when you compare it to other rape revenge films to this like “I Spit On Your Grave” other then that it was Wes Cravens first film so we cant really bag on him for that. Although who ever did the music for this film needs to hung its so annoying it isn’t funny.
The Last House on the Left must be one of the best horror films i’ve ever seen. Even being on of the first of it’s kind, it was incredible. The characters were all likable, even the villains. This film was intensly graphic and gorey, yet you see almost nothing. The later film, the texas chainsaw massacre was very reminisient of last house, with it’s use of minimal gore. Both exellent films. I found the score interesting. I quite liked it. It fit the movie in the sense that it didn’t. Tad slow at the beginning, but it was worth the wait. I’d recomend this film to any horror fanatic.

‘Last House on the Left’ is a debut movie of Wes Craven & Sean.S Cunningham & is the original 1972 Video nasty & was banned in many countries & still some today. The film dose start out pretty slow then it did build up to the good stuff which was a great showcase of terror & alot of shock in the movie as for its time ( as in the 70′s people would have been horrified by what was happening as our time it’s not as shocking because it’s always happening while it was just only happening more in the 60′s/70′s & people where getting shock, soo this film bring the truth of these kind of people that like to do it & get enjoyment out of it).
The Movie did have some good 70′s music/tune & had a lot of violence, sex, acts of violation, revenge & blood (which you could tell it was fake) & even showing gust (which was good but bad for its time), I think this was a brilliant debut of Wes Craven as he did an excellent job, but his written was not so good as the storyline/plot lacked on a back-story & any creative as other Wes Craven film, but this was a great start for him as the master of Horror (even through this film had thrills & terror). The Film is watchable but can be un-tasteful for many people, but is different for the fans of the genre (Thriller, Crime, Drama & Horror), Wes Craven & Sean.S Cunningham fans, while having great texture on the low-budget directing & for its themes, style &the good use of its elements, while the ending was what you would expects but is well worth seeing & is a little classic and cannot wait to see the 2009 remake version one (to see if is any better or worse).
the only thing thats wrong is the hillbilly music intercut with scenes of degradation. otherwise, this is a very solid piece of work that is still treasured to this day
An exploitation movie classic, quite ballsy for a film made in 1972. There is much complaint about the music in the film, which is soft, acoustic folk music. To me, this movie was like how America witnessed the Vietnam war. Scenes and tales of horrible violence and actions while at the time music like featured in the movie was played on the radio. A real contrast to each other, so I found that very interesting. But the movie is a must watch and I recomend to anyone
Let me say this movie is FUCKED UP!!! Not for the squeamish. The remake is laughable compared to this one. I watched this as a teen and it scarred (not scared, SCARRED) me for life. I’m not shitting you. Anybody that tells you any different is trying to a hard-ass.
This is like seeing something you weren’t meant to see. I don’t know how Wes Craven got by without a rated-X when this thing was made. Recommended if you are made of some strong stuff.

You need to view this movie and think about when it was made and who made it. At the time it was made it was very shocking, like Night of the Living Dead 3 years prior. Of course today by the unreal amount of gore and rape and everything else that we see, this seems tame. The story is great (but I do agree the music seems silly quite often), the actors are great, and who doesn’t like a good revenge flick?? And woven through out the film is Wes and his sick/awesome sense of humor

sorry but this is the worst movie iv ever seen. i understand its old, but my god, this movie is just a pile of complete shit. the remake is leaps and bounds better than this. im sure some will be like ” its a classic , and the remake will never live up” imo its the other way around. save this hour of your life and use it elsewhere.
