Awesome! It was so much fun to watch and a lot of the traps were cool. I also liked the idea of the swords, shields, and skull plates. It reminded me of Twisted Metal. BTW, fuck everyone who rags on this movie. It was awesome!

NOT AS BAD as you might think. It has its fair share of gore and the story is mindless but I still had a great time.Don’t let the reviews keep you from seeing a modern day B-movie that I think delivers. You just might find yourself having fun.

Sorry but this was a fun film. I was never a fan of the old one, my friends and I use to make fun of it. And I’m a Roger Corman fan, I think its a step down in his career or the beginning of his step down in his movie library compared to all his Poe films. Anyway this film was fun, not the best but it was good, my friends and I enjoyed it.

When you know you’re going to see another pointless action movie, and you know it will have little to no redeeming value minus the action, and it STILL sucks, the problem has to be the action.

From start to finish, the movie was bland and boring. I wanted to leave after the first 5 minutes as it was, and after that it was like sitting through one of those bad documentaries at school for the other 2 hours. The action was predictable and just downright boring, generic, and pathetic. Add to that the utterly ridicules dialogue scenes that told you things you already know from the credits mixed with clichés from every single action movie ever freaking made, and it felt like I was watching a made-for-TV drama, not an action movie. You’ve seen this movie before. Hundreds of times.

The acting, as well, was horrid. The chick they got to play the cliché “bad prison woman” reminded me of Martha Stewart . . . dumbed down and made even more cliché than the real woman. At one point I had to say: “Look, it’s Mr. Evil!” as he cackled with his huge nose casting a cliché shadow. Everything that could have been menacing in this film was laughable.

There is no more blood in this movie than PG-13 fares like Cloverfield, and it wasn’t as violent as the PG-13 The Dark Knight. Every scene was a cut-off scene without anything graphic happening, and at some points even the fist fights were cut-off scenes. I cannot think of any movie with “violence” as utterly pathetic as this one. It barely earned its R-rating through a minimal amount of blood, and the rest was PG all the way.

I do not know why anyone would find anything in this entertaining. There was maybe a couple action scenes, and the rest was your mother’s cliché TV drama. Am I the only one who wishes action movies were, you know, action-packed anymore?

“‘Death Race’ was written and directed by Paul W.S Anderson, a filmmaker whose toiled away trying to make the perfect movie based on a video game. I’ll give you a few moments to process that before I say…yeah, that’s right, he’s made some really terrible movies. ‘Death Race’ actually looks sort of fun though, definitely a racing film that will erase the memory of the ‘Speed Racer Technicolor Dream-Coat’ at least, and Jason Statham is usually so good in movies like this that he’d make “Fast and the Furious” look like “Beach Blanket Bingo” all by himself. This may be Anderson’s first real entertaining movie, but there has been some question as to whether it really is his movie. Writer Adam Stone says Anderson stole his work, leading to some speculation of plagiarism and possibly to a denied wide release. So there are two questions, one of course will be answered if your reading this review and the other will be is this movie even worth stealing in the first place?

Statham stars as Jensen Ames, a former professional racer turned Steel-mill worker. It’s the future, 2012, and work is hard to find. Ames is laid off from the steel-mill and when he comes home, his wife is murdered by a masked assailant and he is framed for it. Months later he finds himself in Terminal Prison, the bitch to a domineering warden named Hennessey (Joan Allen). Since the prison system has become overcrowded, the prison participates in a death race, a pay-per-view event that allows people to watch cons in cars equipped with machine guns, rocket-launchers, napalm, and other goodies try to kill each other for sport. Hennessey wants Ames to drive and wear the mask of a famous and much-loved competitor, Frankenstein, so that her viewer ratings can stay up, and she makes the promise that if Ames wins the race, he can have his freedom. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Ames will become the new Frankenstein and its not long before he is going up against violent and vicious competitors, including three time winner Machine Gun Joe (Tyrese Gibson).

Watching this movie I could just imagine a group of 13-year old boys sitting behind me, each wearing his WWF and Stone-Cold Steve Austin shirts, having a gay old time with it. So much so that I’m surprised the movie actually went for an R-rating. It’s incredibly dumb and for the most part un-involving, but going back to the R-rating, it does have some decent carnage. The movie is shot in a dreary blue setting, letting us know that the world is no longer a warm and loving place but a cold, violent and ugly looking cess pool. The story means next to nothing and is mostly a three-stage race that gets increasingly redundant as it goes along. Cars go around in circles really fast, blood, bullets, and explosions ensue, people meet grisly deaths and then everything happens all over again. “Death Race” does have a few actual dramatic car duels however, one where Ames goes up against the man that killed his wife and another when he and Machine Gun Joe go up against a tank. The rest is take it or leave it stuff that will interest you only if your really gung-ho about your blood, guts, and souped-up killer cars.

Statham is perfect for this type of role though, giving Ames a gruff, hardcore quality that’s even more high octane than the cars. And Joan Allen is his perfect antagonist. Icy, manipulative, and devious, she makes Hennessey one of the better villains to come out this summer. Its just too bad she’s not apart of a better movie. And like always, Ian McShane is gravel-voiced testosterone. I think that Tyrese Gibson is falling into a pattern here and I hope someone takes him out of it soon. As he showed in ‘Baby Boy’, he is a much better actor than being the sidekick in racecar movies.

‘Death Race’ has some fun and the actors do what they can, but its not so much a movie than an excuse to watch carnage and fast cars. When you see an action movie that’s this dumb, you know the summer is pretty much over.” –C-Younkin, imdb.com

This film was better than I expected it would be, but still not that great. Judging by the red band trailer, i’d say we will probably see an UNRATED dvd/blu release. Seems like alot of the gore was cut out of the theatrical version.

If you havent seen it yet, wait for the DVD release, and give it a rental, its good for a pizza and beer night, but its not something you’ll be ranting and raving about afterwards.

    5/10

Was actually ALOT better then expected, good enough that having to watch it twice didn’t bother me at all! It’s nothing but a dumb action movie, if you go expecting anything else your going to be seriously upset. In a movie like this…just having a story period is a big plus. Not to mention other then the Deathrace itself, the world the film takes place in is very believable.

But seriously this should not of been called Deathrace… Deathrace was a CROSS COUNTRY race where contestants scored points by running over pedestrians. Yes yes yes I know…it is a REMAKE and we should respect the Writer/Directors VISION!! But…seriously you could of replaced the Prison with an Asylum, and made all the Drivers cold blooded killers, and called it “Twisted Metal” the movie..”Twisted Metal:Black anyway”

BD review focus’s too much on the details when this movie is simply all about over-the-top fun shoot em up bullshit. Story doesn’t matter. Nothing matters but the cars, the pretty well placed and entertaining death scenes and the non-stop action. Gave me exactly what I was expecting to watch and was happy for that. Dont understand how someone could say this is the ONLY good movie Anderson has made tho… Anderson did Event Horizon and he’ll never top that again.

I saw this at the cinema opening weekend, and thought it was okay for a remake. I rented the Unrated Extended Version only to find that it was the exact same from the cinema.
Joan Allen in the villain was a genius move.
The down side was it moved too fast, as in the cameras zipped along too quick to really see much of anything.

Paul W.S. Anderson is awesome, he’s directed some of my favorites…..resident evil, event horizon, AVP, and now DEATH RACE which takes the concept of the original and takes a different, more realistic take on the event. with jason statham as Frankenstein this movie is a hit with massive explosions and awesome races!!! pick up and buy this one!!!

If you want to have fun watching a movie with criminals driving cars and trucks wanting to kill each other with blood and a little gore then this is your movie. Better than I thought. Worth watching for a good time.

Better than I thought, although I wasn’t looking for much, but not a bad movie. Thought the ending was too easy and fast for all the other stuff that happened in the film, and could have been a little more violent like the rest of the film, but I understand. Main beef is that I wish they would have went the original film with the cross country race and taking out pedestrians, instead of the whole criminals in a race routine. Felt like a cop-out so you could go yeah they’re criminals racing to the death so who cares, instead of a race where the pedestrians are the targets and everybody is watching their butts.
Not a bad film, just could have went with the original and been a better film.

this was just so unspeakably bad….Jason Statham in my opinion is the worst actor ever to appear on screen and this is just an horrendous awful crappy movie anyone wanting to see a cool chase and good looking women (which is deffinetely not a bad thing by the way in a movie) then go and watch Death Proof a 100% better movie then this, just god awful…and the ending is proberly some of the most piss poor excuse for film making ive ever seen, could of created far more tension but nah just sucked

First of all: not a horror movie.
    Second: Paul W S Anderson.
    Third: Tyrese.
Fourth: Absolute disgrace to the original. Should’ve called it something else.

Come the fuck on people! This is easily the worst film of 2008. It’s so ass retarded. I can’t even say it’s so cheesy it’s good. No this is the sort of cheesy that reeks like moldy crusty underwear.

And how some every time a girl steps on screen they have to queue the sexy music and we get to watch them walk from a dozen different angles for five minutes? Jesus Christ.

One hell of an entertaining ride from start to finish! Jason Statham is bad @ss once again and Joan Allen plays a good cold b!tch and was entertaining watching her be one. This movie is very fast paced with over the top action and violence, it will keep you on the edge of your seat! Though it really doesn’t have anything in terms of a story but it makes up for that believe me, and I also thought it had a kick @ss ending. Overall if you are fans of movies like The Condemned or the original you will definitely get a kick out of this. Recommended!

`Death Race’ is a 2008 Remake on the Original Death Race 2000 in 1975 film. The Movie stared out pretty plain and simple he is framed by a mask man that killed his wife, but makes it look like it was him & is sent to jail, with all the meanest & bad criminal in the world, which he then dose this Race for the next three days that it called Death Race which if he wins all five rounds then the person has the freedom & to clear their name, but it does all go smoothly so they get out a different way, that the basic plot of this remake film.

The Movie has the right amount of style & theme for the type of film & genre it sets, with great CGI & special effects in the movie & has some pretty cool action & car moves that shows some form of talent use, while it has the best set of action & violence in an action movie that I have seen in any movie of 2008 with it genre being action, the movie has some extremely amount of gore for the film that I wasn’t expecting but was cool & somewhat wow!, the film differently give some cool & ace death in film, but you can mostly tell their fake in CGI effects and that the film really show in some grim colours (which set the tone of death & badness).

The acting in the movie was brilliant as Jason Statham had his best performance to date in this remake (as to me I find him to be the best British action actor of our generation & to what we have for British actors), Joan Allen was really amazing in here character (as this is pretty different from what I’ve seen her in as she was a nasty, fucked bitch), Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson, Natalie Martinez where terrific but not prefect in the film and Max Ryan was a great villain in the movie & had some decent acting chops in the movie to, while the direction by Paul W.S. Anderson was pretty decent, as he did some well direction in parts of the film but did fail in some parts, but the storyline/plot by Paul W.S. Anderson was better than I expected as it started out plain & simple as caring one in the movie to be something better & well throughout into a exciting death race on the internet (but was a bit cheesy in the format of an internet show & will see if it happens in 2012?).

The ending to me was mixed as I through Jason character got out was good, but particular, while he got his revenge on Joan character which was bittersweet taste of glory & that Jason ,Tyrese & Natalie got out & living in their freedom was good, but the best bit was that he got his daughter back & that is something sweet & rare in an action film (that was different then I’ve ever seen in an action film & I was quiet surprised that I like it the film, as it a one to watch again for me).

Not as good as the original; the satirical bent is sorely missing and believe it or not this Death Race feels a little sanitized. That being said Statham makes for a strong main character and the film is fast paced with some rousing action/racing scenes. Worth a rent.
