Following his upcoming Resident Evil movie, Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) will be directing the sci-fi horror movie The Flood for Warner Bros., and the filmmaker revealed new details about the project to Deadline.
New Line/Warner Bros. will release The Flood in theaters August 11, 2028, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment producing.
It was Spielberg’s involvement that fueled Cregger’s drive to come up with the idea behind The Flood in a matter of days.
He tells Deadline, “I was watching this movie, and somebody in the movie I was watching was entering an abandoned spaceship. And my wife was like, ‘There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in space.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s interesting. Maybe there’s something here.’ And then this character goes into the ship and they find something that was pretty weird and scared them.
“I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that? What could happen in this scenario that would freak me out more than this?’ And it’s never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes.’”
While it’s not clear whether The Flood will be set in space, it is confirmation that his characters will likely be trapped in a harrowing sci-fi scenario.
Plot details beyond that remain scarce, but Cregger did warn in his recent Reddit AMA not to expect full-blown horror compared to his previous films: “Flood is not quite as horror central as the other movies (altho it might be the most unsettling) and it does have horror moments and aspects.”
One Cregger signature will continue, though: his unique approach to narrative structure. He told Deadline that The Flood “is another movie that is structurally bizarre. Like Barbarian and Weapons, it doesn’t jump perspective, but it structurally is, I think, dexterous.”
The Flood had previously been set up at Netflix.
