[TV] Was Hitchcock Really Evil? “The Girl” Faces Some Backlash

HBO’s “The Girl” premiered on Saturday, October 20th. I actually thought it was really good but, expecting a typical biopic lionization, I was caught off guard. This movie was harsh on Hitchcock. I felt bad for him and his obsessive nature on occasion, but felt much much worse for Tippi Hedren (The Birds, Marnie) and the treatment she suffered at his hands (at least in the version of events depicted in the film). We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Best & Worst of ’10: DAVID HARLEY’S TOP 10 OF 2010

Out of all the lists I’ve done for the site, this year’s best-of compilation was easily the most difficult to write. When I first starting thinking about this way back in August, I was hard pressed to come up with five films that I liked, let alone ones that were strictly horror. But by the time we crossed over into December and all was said and done, my tally sheet was much harder to sort through but for a different reason: I had to narrow a list of twenty-two films down to ten, with an extra three as honorable mentions. Even after I had run them through my normal list of criteria of what I think makes a film great, my count-down order changed numerous times, and only one question helped me determine the iteration you’re looking at now: if I had the option to march right back into the theatre after watching any of these to see it again, which ones would I watch first? Immediately, the fight between a killer tire and ballerina had a winner, and my decision as to whether or not a powerful film was worth including if it made me depressed for days afterwards became clear. Lionsgate Opens Ghost House’s ‘Dibbuk Box’

It has been years, and I literally mean years (I want to say 8?) since I first read the online story about the haunted dibbuk box . Apparently, a dibbuk box was making its way around from household to household via eBay and a website was documenting the events that unfolded. Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures optioned the story nearly three years ago and has heard every pitch known to man. The dust is finally settled and Lionsgate has scored North American rights to Dibbuk Box, which was penned by Juliet Snowden & Stiles White (Knowing, Poltergeist, The Birds, Boogeyman), reports Deadline. Their take? A family finds itself in possession of a haunted box, and struggles to get rid of its evil curse. The jumping off point is a true story culled from the Leslie Gornstein-bylined Los Angeles Times article “A Jinx In A Box” (July 2004). (more…) READ MORE

Second One Sheet for Wes Craven’s ‘The Breed’

Even though the film has yet to see the light of day here in the States, the Wes Craven produced film The Breed (review) has been hitting theaters hard in other countries. Today a second poster and synopsis for the film was found on First Look’s official website and can be viewed inside. The Breed is aiming for a release this May. In the film a group of friends fly away to a deserted island for a weekend excursion.
