Let me first start off by saying that I have never seen Mad Max or Road Warrior, and the last time I saw Escape from New York was many, many years ago. I should also point out that I loved Neil Marshall’s previous films. “The Descent”, in my opinion, is one the best horror movies to come out in a LONG time, and “Dog Soldiers” was one of the better werewolf films I’ve ever seen (a million times better than “Cursed”).

So with that said I went into “Doomsday” pretty optimistic. What I got was one hell of a joyride with blood, action and of course, the lovely to look at Rhona Mitra! Is “Doomsday” a perfect movie? Absolutely not. Is it a good movie? I’m not quite sure of that either. But I do know that I was entertained throughout the whole movie.

One of the problems the movie has is it’s sheer lack of story. There seems to be two or three movies packed into one and after awhile it just gets ridiculous. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes when the medieval times storyline came along. Another problem with this movie, and in my opinion the biggest flaw, are the characters. In Marshall’s previous films I cared for the characters and when one was killed off it was like losing a friend. However in “Doomsday” that just isn’t the case. Even the lead is somewhat of a bore and has very little personality. I didn’t care as much for her to live as I did the girls in “The Descent”.

Now on for the good. This movie is a gore hounds dream! Lot’s of heads getting smashed, decapitations, virus induced bleeding. The gore was FANTASTIC! Although I did find myself snickering more than being horrified. Also, each scene is one action set piece to another, it is quite the ride!

Neil Marshall’s “Doomsday” is far from a perfect picture, but it is one hell of a joyride and I did enjoy it for the most part. Plus you get to look at Rhona Mitra for 90 minutes. I can think of a lot worse things to do with my time.

My only hope is that Neil Marshall can rebound on his next flick to once again scare the living daylights out of us like he did with “The Descent”.

On a side note; has anyone elsed noticed that the so-called “splat pack” members have really done poorly with their third directorial efforts? Marshall’s third movie joins the likes of Roth (Hostel: Part II), Bousman (Saw IV), Zombie (Halloween), and even James Wan (Death Sentence), to have their third movie be less than stellar, unlike the previous two. Just something I was thinking about.

    Anyways, until next time…

My favourite film has always been ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and as i dreamt of becoming a film maker i dreamt of one day doing that sort of movies. Neil Marshall has done it for me, a hundred times better than i could. Lack of story? The movies his flick gets compared to ESCAPE, ALIENS and ROAD WARRIOR all lacked story too. This is what Hollywood used to make, should make but is normally left for the straight to DVD crowd. This is what i want to pay money for. Absolutely mega!

An absolute blast. Neil Marshall already had me sold as a talented filmmaker with ‘Dog Soldiers’ and ‘The Descent’. ‘Doomsday’ (his third film starting with the letter ‘D’) is my least favorite, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth checking out. If you’re a fan of ‘Escape From New York/L.A’, ‘Aliens’ and ‘Mad Max’… this is a mish-mash of all of those with a few new spins on old ideas. Also, any film that proudly boasts Fine Young Cannibals and Siouxsie and the Banshees on its soundtrack gets a pass. Funny enough, the only actor to almost stink everything up was Malcolm McDowell. He stumbled around looking like he mistook the ‘Doomsday’ soundstage for Dr. Loomis’ office. That guy is so fucking lame now! Anyway, brainless fun is abound here… give it a look.

I did not find this as much of a hommage to some 80′s films as I found it totally ripping off Road Warrior. I had high hopes for this film but I left disappointed. It is an action film through and through with very little horror element in it, I was expecting more.

There was a time when Neil Marshall could have been a writer/director to watch…
‘Dog Soldiers’ was gloriously daft but thrilling entertainment; ‘The Descent’ however, took a brilliant, brutal concept and executed it masterfully. Both already genre classics, for Marshall and fans of the above, the future looked good.
With ‘Doomsday’ however, Marshall’s future ain’t bright, but you still gotta wear shades.
Don’t get me wrong here. If you’re of a certain age and you haven’t seen the following movies, ‘Doomsday’ might just rock you: ‘Escape from New York’, ‘ Mad Max 2: Road Warrior’, ”Aliens’, ‘Evil Dead 3: Army of the Dead’, and blatantly, ’28 Days/Weeks Later’.
If you have though, then ‘Doomsday’ is just AN other big budget but crushingly pointless spectacle.
The wit, style and panache of Robert Rodriguez’ ‘Planet Terror’ for example – itself a pure, loving homage to John Carpenter, is sorely missing here; and maybe Marshall’s intention was to pay tribute to his favourite 80′s genre classics: but why then, unlike Rodriguez, is there NOT ONE original frame in ‘Doomsday’?
Let me repeat that: Not. One.
Remember Paul W Anderson? Remember ‘Event Horizon’?
So the cast,(largely), do a great job with a bad script, the action scenes are effectively handled, the direction is competent: SO WHAT?
    This movie is garbage.

Can you tell I’m a wee bit annoyed..?

Ok the deal. This is tongue in cheek sci-fi violence. Were talking mad max meets 28 days later. People who see this either think this is the coolest action movie in a long time or its the worst piece of crap in the world. THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND.

I personally think it was really entertaining. I would say check it out on DVD and make sure you watch it if you don’t mind a break from the horror and throw this one in your blockbuster que. Its a fun ride with good actors. BUT… Know that you are watching an action film and it doesn’t take its subject too serious.

    I dig it.

Neil Marshall’s third Feature length film was, for me, a lot less satisfying than “The Descent”, and even despite “Dog Soldiers”‘s smaller budget, there was still some sort of intuition with that film that completely lacks on “Doomsday”. Not to say it’s bad… it has great action, realistic effects and some pretty trippy time transcendent plot twists within the script. But overall I just felt a little stumped by the end. I know that no director wants to make the same film twice, but I would like to see Neil Marshall at least touch the same vein of intensity that held us captive in “The Descent”. This is a good movie to see once, and I’m sure it would have been better on the big screen. But I know what Mr. Marshall is capable of, and I hope on his next body of work he gravitates back to his roots talent. Real Horror.

    *****Review May Contain Minor Spoilers*****

“‘Doomsday,’ the third feature from British “B”-movie tour de force writer-director Neil Marshall, is a rehash of several distant cult movies, including both of Marshall’s previous films, which are also considered cult classics. Yet, that doesn’t make “Doomsday” even remotely bad, but it does make it very interesting not just to follow the story along, but to also point out the many references to films past.

Even the most amateurish film buff could point out the assorted references to “28 Days/Weeks Later,” “Escape from New York” (1981), “Aliens” (1986), and the “Max Mad” movies. It’s all part of the fun, really, and you can’t blame Marshall for making references to the movies he loves and have inspired him as a filmmaker. Even his first feature “Dog Soldiers” (2002) and his superior follow-up horror flick “The Descent” (2005) get some mention here.

In the future, an out-of-control virus called the “Reaper virus” (the “28″ movies) completely decimates Scotland, eventually leading to its being quarantined off with a 20-foot-tall, 12-inch-thick impenetrable wall (“Escape from New York”) on all sides. The rest of the world goes on as if nothing happened, while millions are forced to fend for themselves in the virus-ravaged wasteland of former Scotland. In the the 30 years since the quarantine, law & order broke down and anarchy took over.

30 years later, the Reaper Virus makes a comeback, this time outside the quarantine zone. More news develops when spy satellites monitoring the former Scotland detect human survivors. Could there be uninfected people? Could there be a cure in there somewhere? Regardless, the government organizes a small task force to go inside and find answers. Nelson (Bob Hoskins), a government handler, is given the assignment of having his best operative Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra) go inside with a crack team of commandos and look for answers.

    They have 48 hours.

Right away, “Doomsday” removes itself from other post-apocalyptic movies by not focusing on the catastrophe itself and instead just focuses on humanity’s attempt to move forward. “Doomsday” is about anarchy, and the downfall of society: What happens when you just leave a country to wither and die in the face of disaster? On the inside, however, it’s all about finding a cure or a vaccine and bringing it back to the rest of the world. When Sinclair and her team are on the inside, they’re all on their own, but of course they are not alone. As it turns out, barbaric clans have been formed (the “Mad Max” movies), under the leadership of Sol (Marshall’s favorite go-to guy and movie regular, Craig Conway), who seeks to lead his punk regalia-clad minions to the conquest of the free world outside the quarantine zone. It should be pointed out here that they’re pretty much cannon fodder (“Aliens”).

It’s fair to chide “Doomsday” for some script deficiencies and overly-abundant throwback references to films past and an apparent lack of details regarding Scotland’s decimation in the 30 years since the Reaper Virus’s outbreak, and Sol’s rise to power. But Marshall keeps “Doomsday” lean and focused. Once on the inside, it’s anything goes, as Sinclair and her teammates are pretty much left to fend for themselves when Sol’s men ambush them and force them to participate in increasingly sadistic games of violence for survival and for that, the blood and gore is sufficient (Marshall knows no boundaries in the area of special effects).

“Doomsday” is an accomplished third feature from a provocative filmmaker, Neil Marshall. Though by no means perfect (“The Descent” was and I was feverishly looking for “Doomsday” to surpass it), “Doomsday” is still looking to make a killing at the movies this weekend.” –dee.reid, imdb.com

Neil Marshall steps up to the plate and takes the hanging 3-2 curve ball 418ft over the fence in right-center field. Ok, enough with the baseball jargin.
Neil kind of threw originality out the window with this one. He took elements from Mad Max, 28 Days Later, Escape from New York, and Resident Evil to make this bad-ass flick. The action sequences were extremely fun, the kills were nice and graphic, and the acting was not the worst, no academy awards here but fun. Did I mention this was fun? Rhona Mitra is sexy as hell and pulls off the “bad ass” chick role, about as good as any other chick could. The only thing that made me scratch my head was the whole Mid-Evil element. I get what he was trying to do, but IMO, it could’ve been done a litte differently. The chase scene was kick ass too. But, I will say…A Bentley would DUST a cop car on the open road like that. Overall, if you haven’t watched this yet, put it on your list. Its a good flick to watch when you want mindless entertainment.

For nothing but a pure mindless action movie, it’s better than a lot I’ve seen. I think I may even consider this to me Neal’s most mature movie, if not his best.

First: It’s a lot bloodier than your standard action movie. It’s not quite as bloody as The Decent, but it’s about twice as bloody as Dog Soldiers. I think the only comparison I can make as far as the blood level would have to be The Hills Have Eyes and Death Sentence. None of them are cringe-worthy, but they’re a lot mort ballsy than your normal action flick.

Second: Yes, most of the movie pays homage to other movies. Aliens, Sin City, Gladiator, Mad Max, 28 Weeks Later . . . and a lot more that I probably didn’t even pick up. But to call this movie “genetic” as the main review did is retarded. The main premise is generic, yes. The way it’s executed is something that I’ve never seen done before. Generic originality, if you will.

But I can’t forget how dull so much of the film was. When Sol was putting on his show and his, umm . . . wife (?) was flicking her tongue, all was right in the world. In the black knight bit, same. But other parts of the movie were just too bland, and could have easily used a 15-minute cut.

In the end, I think this is by far Neal Marshal’s most mature movie from a technical standpoint. I was never a fan of The Decent, simply because it was too cliché for me, and Dog Soldiers was too low budget for its own good. I think Neal is now one of my directors to watch for.

Following on from the success of Dog Soldiers and The Descent, Neil Marshall’s third feature is a more buffed-up, explosive affair. A concoction derived from Aliens, The Warriors, Mad Max and Escape from New York, the action dizzyingly swifts from a diseased-ridden futuristic London, to apocalyptic Scotland and then it’s quickly off to the Medieval Highlands for some swordplay. Oh yeah, and then there’s a mad car chase involving a brand-spankin’ new Bentley. And a slightly modified bus.

Aesthetically, Doomsday is rich and multi-layered; it’s interesting to see the many visions of a Dystopian society, particularly in direct contrast with each other. But this doesn’t make for a smooth narrative — the plot is jarring, and the rapid shift in settings (especially when it’s in the same bloody Country!) leaves behind boulder-sized plot holes — why the need to resort to cannibalism when there are so many bloody cows around?!

The plot in question concerns the deadly Reaper virus. Years ago, it lay waste to Scotland; with the threat running rampant, the simplest idea was to wall off the entire Country, keeping the ‘infected’ at bay with giant machine guns surrounding the perimeter — an idea illustrated by horrible bunny death! Thirty years later, and the Reaper virus begins to creep back, striking in an overcrowded London. Through the use of satellite imagery, the Government learns that there are survivors in the grimy Scottish cities, meaning that there must also be a cure. Led by Major Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra), a team of soldiers and scientists are sent beyond the wall, hoping to track down Dr Kane (Malcolm McDowell), who may or may not have the cure.

After the Aliens style battle, where our heroes battle angry Glaswegians, it all goes a bit Mad Max when the leader, Sol (and son of Dr Kane) captures our team, treating them to a primitive can-can, complete with pole dancers before making with the cannibalism. The make-up of the marauders here is intriguing, if a tad unoriginal. They jump around, looking like a snarling, venomous version of that teenage-drama show, The Tribe. The big showdown exists in the slightly Lord of the Rings-esque Highlands and cultivates in a marvellous, if stupid car chase down a deserted motorway.

In terms of acting, Bob Hoskins and Malcolm McDowell add a touch of class to the fray. However, the burden lies on Rhona Mitra’s shoulders as tough-as-old-boots Eden Sinclair. To put it mildly, she’s no Linda Hamilton — Mitra may be able to snarl out the odd swear word, and cart around a badass weapon, but she lacks charisma and remains ineffectual. The rest of the cast aren’t much better, and ultimately, unlike the characters which populate the films Doomsday pays homage to, we don’t really care about them.

Although Doomsday is an 80′s homage/science fiction/fantasy hybrid, there’s no shortage of gore — heads are blown off, bodies are ran over, people are cooked alive — blood is strewn across the screen in bucketfuls, even splattering against the camera in one particular fight with a solder and a Knight. Pretty soon our team’s mission deteriorates into nothing but a primal game of survival. And that’s just fine. The plot at this point is unimportant — Doomsday may be inconsistent gobbledygook, but it’s enjoyable gobbledygook. Just remember to leave your brain behind, and enjoy the bumpy ride.

DOOMSDAY; All of the Armageddon cliches in the world can’t save this air-biscuit

Here we go again; time for me to write yet another review of a modern horror movie that includes everything except the horror. The only reason why I don’t just copy and paste one of my old reviews is because this time I don’t get to go on my usual Hollywood tirade, because this flick is from the UK.

Doomsday was probably one of the most hyped horror movies of 2008 by such industry icons as Fangoria Magazine that I was really excited about finally getting a chance to see it. Not because I hang on the critical praise of Fango, hardly. But more because this one was coming from across the pond, which usually means “intelligent” at least. Unfortunately, now I have to edit that qualifier, as DOOMSDAY reminded me that there’s always an exception.

The worst part is that, aside from the extremely annoying prosthetic eye gags heaped upon the audience, the first half hour of the film is quite deftly crafted and actually entertaining. Starting with a lethal viral outbreak in contemporary Scotland that takes us through a brief, but informative prologue that leads to Britain walling off the Northern Kingdom, leaving us thirty years in the future. The first act is much better than I had anticipated, even giving the post-apocalyptic Scottish landscape real scope most end of the world yarns come up short on.

That is, until Act 2, when our heroes encounter the natives and we suddenly find ourselves in an entirely different movie, complete with it’s very own 80′s soundtrack. Honestly, it felt like the original writers got fired part way through and the new writers just picked up where their predecessors left off. This would be really annoying to have happen once. Imagine how I felt when twenty minutes later, the new writing team clocked in and no we’ve gone from Mad Max to James Bond as our one-eyed heroine drives a Bentley 100mph in reverse during the films action-movie-esque climax scene.

As hard as the film-makers tried to guarantee success by packing their movie with more cliches than a satire, all they ended up doing was confusing me and making me laugh out loud at its juvenile attempts at any type of acceptance. Add to those the very large budget someone irresponsibly gave the production only served to make me really, REALLY dislike this movie. Ironically enough my favorite part of the film is the character that spends more time as a prosthetic joke device than an actor delivering lines, which is about as accurate a metaphor as I can come up with for DOOMSDAY; the best thing about it is a performance of a latex sculpture of an actor.

I don’t know who should be more upset; me for watching this piece of garbage or Tina Turner for not getting to go back to Thunderdome too.

Also throw in a John Carpenter synth rip off score and you get Doomsday. One schizophrenic movie if there ever was one. The genre of this mish mash changes with every scene but regardless of all that it is a fun, riot of a movie. No need to go all in depth with this review cause if you add all the above mentioned movies together then you’ll know what it’s about. Doomsday- 2007

Good Parts- well paced, entertaining, some good gore effects, decent acting

Bad Parts- generic plot line, some acting was bad, way too similar to Mad Max, some parts were just plain stupid

Overall a decent horror/action movie that’s full of entertainment, but is too generic and half assed to be considered a modern day classic

    7/10

An chaotic, fast paced, action packed, bloody, thrill ride, that never fails at entertaining. Neil Marshall is a director to watch out for, he definitely knows what moviegoers want. Rhona Mitra is one of the sexiest screen actresses of today and was kick @$$ here. I like to see a sequel from this. One of my favorites, highly recommended!

This is a very UNDERRATED film, Neil Marshall brings us another great action packed, gore filled adventure that barely gives u the time to take a breath.Sexy Heroine fighting cannibals and medieval soldiers=Kick Ass Movie. SEE IT!!!!

A polarizing movie. Either you’ll love it or hate it and I loved it. In spades!! However, I can understand why Doomsday might not be your thing – my sister and her boyfriend walked out when the apocalyptic cannibals started dancing to FYC’s Good Thing. A few others were similarily turned off.

Listen, I enjoyed the blatant homage to the 80s. I found it immensely satisfying to see Marshall blend different films together and you should pay close attention to the details. It was fun, Neil Marshall kicks ass and I love Mitra.

Doomsday is one of the most disorganized movies I have ever seen. The time frame was during the 2050′s , but at the middle part, the characters enter this medieval place complete with dungeons and knights.

Before the King Arthur crap, the characters encountered a cannibalistic cult. If I was locked away from civilization, I’d understand if I saw a couple of buddies eat some people. But what’s up with the pre-historic tattoos and ugly hair??

And there was this part where this random infected guy miraculously broke into the building and started attacking everybody. And the protagonist Rhona Mitra is a bad actor. I said “actor” because she looks like a guy.

I can’t believe the director of The Descent was responsible for this. Shame on him.

I honestly did not like this movie, I know people say it is cheesey fun but I thought for the most part it was stupid, it had a few okay parts but for the most part it did nothing for me

A movie like a rollercoaster. You never know what’s next. Sure it’s all a bit messed up and you definitely don’t get what you expect to get – but in the end it’s a great fun movie

What a pathetic waste of time. This thing is so disorganized and all over the place it’s like “Holy crap. We have an idea. Oh wait. It’s only worth 20 minutes of film. Let’s throw in a bunch of other stuff and see what happens!” The premise is as ancient as the hills. Then it goes 28 Days Later. Then it goes Camelot (would’ve preferred the Holy Grail). Then it goes Mad Max. And all of it is just horribly acted. This was a mess from start to finish and should be avoided

This is one kickass film right here! It’s Road Warrior, meets 28 Days Later, mixed with a little bit of Gladiator. Just an awesome, really fun, and action packed old school post apocalyptic film. Rhona Mitra rocks!

I’m not sure if Doomsday qualifies as a horror movie, but it is well done and is worth seeing. At first it seems like it is going to be just another outbreak movie, but it turns out to be much more. It is a journey into the dystopian world that was once scotland .Lots of action in this one, as well as a good dose of blood and guts. Fun!

first off, i was disappointed when i found out that it was more of a cannibal movie rather than a zombie one, but i gave it a chance…and i was not disappointed! full of action, great acting and a great storyline. although, sean pertwees character dies in a very similar way to the cop in silent hill….still brilliant.
