To me, “I Sell The Dead” could very easily be passed off as a modern day entry into the “Hammer Horror” series of films. Considering it was shot in New York, it does a very good job at convincing you it was shot in 19th century England.
“I Sell The Dead” follows Arthur Blake(Dominic Monaghan: Lost) and Willie Grimes(Larry Fessenden: Director of “The Last Winter”) two people who make their living robbing graves. Starting to struggle, the pair figure out where the real money in grave robbing is made, the undead.
I absolutely loved this film, although a warning beforehand, it’s more of a quirky comedy than it is a horror film. The script is amazing, and is very well delivered by all the actors involved. Dominic Monaghan turns in an especially impressive performance.
My one gripe with the film, is there is one scene of flaky CGI, you’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it. It stands out like a sore thumb in this otherwise, amazing film. If you’re entertained by Quirky, independent, Horror/Comedy films, you can do no wrong by watching “I Sell The Dead.” And, like I said before, if you’re a fan of the Hammer Horror series, you’re in for a treat.
4/5

I adored this fun little movie! Do yourself a favor and snuggle up with your honey and some popcorn and enjoy this quirky well made gem.
Seriously, I had no freaking inkling that this movie was shot anywhere other than the UK. I would really like to know how they managed to make New York look like 1800′s England. The movie is great and has a lot of atmosphere that’s very convincing.
Once again I get amped on a film that appears to be doing something different with the genre, and end up terribly disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the filmmakers are doing something different here, and visually, I’m loven’ it, but the story-lines are garbage. I love a good anthology film, but every time a new one comes out, it seems more like an excuse to cram several awful shorts together, then an attempt at unique storytelling. These aren’t mini-stories, their just quick “this would be cool” moments that never add up to anything but disappointment.
That being said, props to the filmmakers for selling Ye Ol’ England in modern day NYC, and super mad props to Fessenden who really kills his role!
Here’s to putting in a little more script time on the next go-round fellas.
Great Gothic Atmosphere and humor, and a cool mish mash of monsters, graverobbing, and the undead. Alot of fun.
This is a fun period piece with great sets and costumes that really set the mood. There are a good number of ghouls in this movie, but it’s light hearted, and maybe a bit too goofy at times. Still, I’m glad I’ve seen it, and recommend it to anyone looking for soomething new.
This movie is cute but the story isn’t that interesting. It’s just nice and sweet with a little bit of the dead… Far from horror. I do agree it’s different and I like that but it’s just 2 cute and tame. I like more horror in my horror movies
This is a great film for those guys who date women who hate horror films ‘cuz they can show them this movie and it’s bland enough for those sissy girls! Haha
Are you a horror film or a comedy? Strong performances in all the lead roles can’t save a film that suffers from multiple personality disorder. More details here:

great proformances and is funny and has some great effects, an instant cult classic
A good Mystery Horror film with a good but obvious reveal at the end.Great cast, awesome atmosphere, and a great story.I want a sequel for sure. This was light on scares but still felt respectable in the genere.
clever movie ifc usually delivers well
Very entertaining and funny film.
A precious horror comedy gem created with alot of heart. Chock full of atmosphere and ghoulish fun. A real treat!!
Good attempt at a different horror/comedy, but found the bunch of tales to be a mixed bag and somewhat boring at times, especially the stageplay feel of the Pearlman/Monaghan sitdown throughout the movie. Fessenden is a charm throughout and was a great choice for his role–best moments of the movie come through him. Can see where this will appeal greatly to some, but even after a second chance viewing I found it hard to keep interest at times.
An entertaining film filled with humor and scares. The atmosphere of the film and cinematography were well done! Glad I got to see this one.
I didn’t like “I Sell the Dead” when I first saw it. I didn’t like how it felt and I didn’t find it all that funny. But that was then (early 2010) and this is now (mid-2011). I’ve changed and become more accepting and tolerable. So I was willing to give this indie effort another chance at impressing me; now that I’m more acquainted with this genre and all. I still don’t think that the film is made for everyone, but for those it is made for; it’s somewhat of a gem.
And a lost gem at that. “I Sell the Dead” is a wicked, ghoulish satire that succeeds on pretty much all fronts, for what it is. There’s nothing truly amazing about it as a horror-comedy made on an extremely low-budget, but I feel it’s not as appreciated or admired as it should be. If you like zombies, corpses, the undead, or anything pertaining to horror, then this is the flick for you. I suppose it’s good for what it is, and this time when I watched it, I found it consistently funny and amusing. There are even some minor “indie scares”, if there is such a thing. All-in-all, you need to forgive the flaws and just go with it.
Willie (Larry Fessenden) and Arthur (Dominic Monaghan) are two grave robbers. But they’re not nasty like most people in their line of business; they’re actually somewhat charming. Willie takes in Arthur as his apprentice as a young age and into adulthood; where they make a killer of a earning with the corpses of the dead; some which tend to….reanimate a bit.
Arthur tells his life-story to a priest (Ron Perlman), who has his own plans in store for the “criminal. While the whole world thinks that Arthur and Willie are murderers, which they very well might be for something that they do later on in the film, we see them as two guys trying to bond through business. The film takes the buddy-comedy route and it’s surprisingly good at being one of those films. There aren’t many good buddy-comedies nowadays, and the fact that this one works is more than enough for me.
I suppose the reason the comedy between the two characters works is because the two actors are given enough screen time, and enough chemistry, to work flawlessly together. Willie is the most unpleasant of the two grave robbers, yet I find him as funny as he was disgusting and crude. Arthur, however, is easier to like; but somewhat more arrogant than his partner in crime.
I appreciated the quest that the characters went on. This adventure was worth taking. The effects are very, very good as far as low-budget filmmaking goes, and the film even satisfies as a simple zombie flick. It’s not full of blood and gore, but it has enough of both to impress some of the most seriously devoted zombie-movie fanatics. Go in expecting the unexpected, and you will not be disappointed, because I know I was not.
I’m wondering what was going through my head when I first concluded that I strongly disliked this film. Perhaps I felt it was tasteless. Perhaps I felt it was too different for my tastes. But now that I’m familiar with the horror genre, I couldn’t help but smile at moments such as the ones where corpses leap onto characters and out of coffins, children bite their pet rabbits, and Angus Scrimm makes an unexpected and entertaining appearance. Horror fans rejoice; this was made for us. And it’s bloody entertaining.
