amazing movie with an amazing script, great atmosphere and terrific actors. I loved it and I think that we really need more movies like this
Firstly I’m a big Christopher Smith fan I loved Severance it was genius, so I really wanted to love this, but honestly I can’t say that I did. I found it well made techniqually but the story was a bit of a mixed bag, I felt some things worked but others fell apart or didn’t help in telling the story. Also the casting of Melissa is great but the other C-list Aussie soap actors were pretty terrible, I don’t know what was worst their objectionable acting or their bad American accents. I was disapointed
One head trip of a movie. Melissa George is excellent in her role, very believable and the supporting actors are very well cast. Just goes to show you don’t need a massive budget and lots of special effects to make a great, suspenseful and compelling film that keeps you gripped until the credits roll..You are not spoon fed by the twisty plot which does require concentration. The only flaw of this movie is that i felt quite exhausted after it ended (however that could be a good thing) you decide….well worth a view 8/10
Why is this film being called great and original. I think I must of seen a totally different film because I swear I had seen this film done a thousand times before. and when you make the film one head trip(the shinning, sixth sense)instead of 100 repeats
it works better for me at least. if you want to see a good repeat head trip then watch Dark Country. They are all to easy to figure out for me thou.
Was looking forward to it and came away mighty disappointed. If you love Melissa George you’ll love Triangle but for everyone else, it doesn’t really offer much. Tries too hard to be clever and for me, gets pretty tiresome. I wanted some resolution and never got it…and plot holes galore.
I was really looking forward to this and would have given it more had it not been for what I think it one big flaw that makes the entire plot pointless!
*** SPOILER ***
So the plot basically goes around in a never ending circle with the end basically going back to the beginning so it starts all over again.
Throughout the entire film she never develops amnesia. In fact quite the opposite, she starts to learn what happens next.
Yet mysteriously throughout the opening scenes she ‘thinks she’s been here before’ but doesn’t remember why.
Does she suddenly lose her entire memory of the whole experience at the start of every loop then? Meh!
Melissa George was incredible, yet again, with her role. I thought the movie wasn’t pointless. I found it to be quite enjoyable. But I think it’s one of those ‘hit or miss’ movies. Either you like it or you don’t. To me, it was memorable. Two days after watching it and I still vividly remember Triangle.
All in all, I’d recommend this movie to a few select friends who I know would appreciate such a script.
I hated this film!! I’m going to be pretty rough on this because I had such high hopes for this thriller that stars the lovely Melissa George who gave a pretty good performance as a somewhat unbalanced mother of an autistic child who needs some alone time and decides to go on a sailing trip with a couple of friends but soon finds that was a mistake and finds herself stranded on a huge abandon ship that is in some kind of weird timewarp. I think she is wasted here, it also had nice production values and had you thinking and on the edge of your seat throughout. The thing is that it didn’t make much sense at all and is one of those movies that makes you make up your own ending to what just happened but that didn’t help either and it still didn’t make much sense. I added this to my queue thinking I was going to get a creepy burmuda triangle mystery/thriller movie but all I got is an never ending thriller version of Groundhog Day and not in a good way. There were some pretty violent, bloody scenes here and there but not worth mentioning and had a great atmosphere that didn’t deserve to be in this mess of a film. Overall this was a HUGE disappointment to me on all levels because it had so much potential but never went anywhere and left me confused and hanging and it’s a shame because there seems to be alot of effort put into this just not in the story or script which was a mess to me. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!
What a cool movie. I can see why a lot of people aren’t going to like it. But if you like weird twilight zone shit, this is for you. If your not into repeating stuff then do NOT WATCH. I like how they set it up too. The acting was mehh. Some cool violent scenes not to heavy on gore. If you like twisty movies then do give it a try if not stay far away.
It was decent. Not what i was really expecting, but it was alright. I’m just not the biggest fan of horror films like this one, once you watch it, you’ll know what i mean. The acting and everything was great, the only thing that let me down was that it was not what i was expecting. But for what it was, it was an alright movie. If you wanna check it out go for it, if not, you’re not really missing anything to exciting.
I thought it was freakin retarded.the first 35 minutes was good after that it goes to total shit! and gets soooo boring.its like Groundhog Day of thrillers.
too confusing for me but i did enjoy watching it.. yeah.. definetely don’t fully understand it
This isn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen, but considering how high my expectations were going in, I couldn’t help but be really disappointed after it was all over.
I had heard some good things about this, plus read a pretty nifty article in Fangoria awhile back that really made me think that this movie might be special, but it just didn’t live up to the hype. I thought the acting was decent all the way around. The production values were also solid. It didn’t feel like a super-cheap movie. So, I give it props for that.
But the story…Ugh. Just terrible. I knew the movie was going to be a bit of a mind-trip, but I had read comments from the director saying all the confusing elements would be explained by the end. Ummmm…nope. Didn’t happen. I left scratching my head at all the major plot holes in this thing. What did I just see? But you know what? Even if the script had explained everything fully by the end, I still don’t think the story was very strong. And the horror elements here weren’t intense or scary enough to overcome the weaknesses of the script. You know, a good scare or amount of gore goes a long way in helping me forgive a mediocre screenplay, but those were missing here.
I can’t really recommend this to anyone. Sorry.
i thought this movie was really damn great. the first great surprise of 2010 in my opinion. Already watched it twice. Gonna make the bluray purchase now.
what what what what what i didnt get this film its the most confusing movie ive seen this year so far. y was this so bad!!! i new it was going to be crap from the start tho.
I really liked this movie. Usually when you see a movie with this type of plot it has way too many plot holes. But Triangle does a great job of connecting the dots as the story progresses. You will still be trying to figure things out after the movie ends but in this case that’s a good thing.
If you enjoy movies like Donnie Darko, Memento, or The Machinist, you will probably like this.
I didn’t care for it. It started off well, but it dropped significantly in quality as it went on.
Didn’t like this movie at all. It’s just constant circles with no real point, not particularly entertaining.
How far would you go for love? Would you kill for it? Would you allow a tragedy to happen for it? This concept is one of a couple of common themes explored in this film.
This well-acted and surreal thriller starts off normal enough with a mom, portrayed by the solid Melissa George(30 Days of Night), who has an autistic son, but decides to go sailing with a customer she met at the diner she works at.
A terrible storm capsizes their boat and strands her, the guy who invited her and 3 of their friends on the capsized boat. When a strangely deserted ocean liner comes to their rescue, the story really picks up.
Most recently Stephen King and his Dark Tower series explored the theme of an epic journey, tough choices and sacrifices and a resetting of all that has happened, requiring the journey to begin again. This theme is seriously explored in this film, as the mother soon realizes that the murder of her friends seems to be happening again and again.
While thew film starts out early on as a creepy affair, it seems like the director chose to speed up the suspense, the stalking and the killing, in an effort to advance the plot. Sadly, this means that after about 30 or 40 minutes, the actual suspense and terror is essentially gone as you begin to realize what is occurring.
As the film progresses to the end, it becomes clear just exactly why these events continue to happen, as if in a loop, constantly on repeat. This loop is the true tragedy, as I nothing in the 139 minute runtime to suggest that anything would ever change.
The mother’s inability to do anything different, once she realizes what is happening, much less her willingness to embrace her inner darkness is also a bit troubling. At some point, particularly after she accepts what is happening to her, she would have been willing to try something different.
This paradox, somewhat taints the impact of the movie’s “twist”, but not to the point of ruining the film. Overall I found triangle a strong blend of horror, suspense and a bit of scifi thrown in. The performances were strong enough and the story kept me wondering what was going to happen next up until the very end(well for the most part anyways).
Be well prepared to THINK when the movie is over.
I absolutely loved this movie. It was different, original, and flat-out perfect in my opinion. It’s been weeks since I have watched it and I still don’t fully understand it; which for me, is a good thing.
Triangle is a creepy and eerie thrill ride.
Wow, people really need to start THINKING during movies. Half of the negative reviews for this film on this site complain that the movie didnt explain everything therefore they did not understand it. This movie actually dares people to THINK, so people generally do not like to think and did not like it. The movie has an amazing plot, and usually i tend to see where movies will go very quickly, but this had me totally shocked at every twist that came. The movie also had good acting, was surprisingly violent, and had me thinking for a long time afterwards. So do not see this movie if you expect to just be entertained, as this film requires you to think, but for those who enjoy a movie that you have to decipher to understand, watch this film! It is truly great!
Certainly flawed, but it still manages to thrill and chill.
Wow, this was a nice surprise. I didn’t expect the complex movie that is Triangle. At first I simply thought it was some crazy guy in an abandoned ship killing people, I won’t spoil it for you but this is the kind of movie where you have to pay attention to every little aspect. This movie is not for people who don’t like twists in films. Great thriller that I think should have had a run in theaters. Recommended.
Absolutelly insane, weird, amazing, grotesc, ‘looney’, and mostly, an absolute surprise.
Out of ordinary, it scored gr8 on my board of top movies.
Original, disturbing, all I really enjoy in a movie.
One of the 2009′s that will be remembered.
(actually, I dreamed alot with things alike during that same night I watched the movie)
alright movie 6/10
Quite a bad movie. Not much else I can say since I would dive into spoilers but the main character’s motivations never make any sense to me. Not one moment does she make a logical decision.
fucking mind bending loved it unbelievably good and melissa george was so good
It was a decent film, but thought it got tedious with showing the same thing happening over again but from different points of view. With that said I still thought it was a good film and a little fucked up. Do need someone to tell me if I get this right, but she and her child dies in the car crash, yes? If that’s the case then why does she go on the boat ride? Did get a little confused about that at the end.
this movie was pretty good i liked the idea of it starting over again though the ending was completly weird but melisa george kicked some ass in that movie so i preffer everyone to watch it
if you watch this movie make sure to watch it from the main characters perspective…not yours!!
***SPOILERS*** One problem with this movie is that the characters are pretty shallow and unlikeable. But the biggest problem with this flick is the plot – it is completely illogical. If you’re stuck in a loop where things keep repeating themselves, you would make some reasonable attempt to break out of that loop, right? The main character, Jess, doesn’t seem to do much in that regard. She just falls in step and keeps repeating her mistakes, very stupid. And then there’s the part where she has to kill everybody to break out of the loop – I understand why it’s in the script, it moves the story forward – but from the perspective of the character and her motivations for doing that, it makes no sense. And when she finally does get off the ship, the story continues to be completely asinine, sacrificing any internal logic to keep the ludicrous time-loop storyline in play. Ugh, this is a very bad movie.
This movie was better than I expected. Great atmosphere, good acting, and an interesting plot. Has a good rewatch value.
This started as a bit intriguing, then turned into the familiar, and then into…nothing? The first third of the story did hold interest in trying to figure out the catalyst or what was happening. But in moving past the body and conclusion, the reasons for the main character and her actions (or non-actions) dissolved what the film had going for it. Too bad—-it wasted a decent intro/set-up and a good performance by George.
One of the smartest fuggin’ movies Cheesy has ever ever seens. . . and Cheesy has seen many many! Wow, I wanna give this piece of cinema more thatn 5 skullies, but I can’t!
Watch it and use your brain. . . for once! mnahhhhh
Surprisingly well done.
Lets get the bad out of the way 1st:
The characters are unlikeable / forgettable. The dialogue is mediocre, somewhat bad in some places. The main actress gets better as the movie progresses but nothing to write home about.
The good:
The CGI is actually on point for like 90% of the movie.
The story is expertly crafted and comes full circle by the end of the film and it makes 100% sense, no plot holes. My friend and I thought about it for a good 20minutes after watching and we were able to piece everything together using only what was shown in the movie.
There is not a whole lot of gore so gorehounds might be dissapointed.
Its more of a fast paced mystery / psychological thriller then it is a horror movie.
Highly reccomended if you can look past mediocre acting to appreciate the was everything unfolds.
As has been mentioned in a few others, The big flaw with this film is the really uninteresting characters. Otherwise this is a really well done film. It reminded me a lot of Nacho Vigalondo’s Timecrimes, which I truly loved. Check this movie out.
Triangle is a very well done thriller that had me guessing what would happen with every turn.
If you want my advise, watch this movie without knowing ANYTHING about it. my friends tend to just dump me their watched dvd’s they think id like or they no longer want and this was one of them, without even reading the blurb i just stuck this in the DVD player assuming it was about some masked killer on a boat. boy was I wrong. has you thinking “what the heck” the whole way through. It certainly lives up to its title as a “very confusing movie” it took the director two years to right, and i can see why! is a good film but i found after a while it did get a little bit boring. and what put me off this movie was i was watching thinking, “meh in the end it’ll all unravel”, but it didn’t. you sort of don’t find out why this is happeneing, well you do, but it really doesn’t make it very clear. in the end i researched the movie on the internet to actually find out what it means and what the plot actually was! then once i watched it, it all made sense. a good movie, but youll need a very high IQ to understand the nitty gritty details. but never the less, a good one. not quite a horror/thriller id say.
I knew nothing about Triangle, a film by Christopher Smith, before watching it, and I must say that that is probably the best way to approach this movie. Though not purely horror, Triangle is a mind-twisting mystery which smartly employs both supernatural and slasher elements while never venturing too far into either subgenre. Each time I expected the movie to take a turn for the worse, it only became more interesting.
Triangle tells the story of a group who board a seemingly deserted cruise vessel after their yacht is capsized by a freak storm. To say anymore about the plot would be giving too much away, making this review torturous to write as this is the kind of movie you want to share with others and discuss. (The plot device at work is something we have seen before, but I will not name that particular American comedy.)
The script is tight and intelligent – don’t blink or you may miss something – and supposedly took two years to write. The casting is great and the cinematography beautiful. The direction reveals an expert storyteller on the rise in the mold of Christopher Nolan, who similarly messed with our sense of time and perspective in films like Memento (2000). Smith’s love of the horror genre is apparent as Triangle conveys a veiled homage to Kubrik’s masterpiece, The Shining (1980). Additionally, Melissa George ties the film together in a terrific performance in the lead role, playing a distraught mother trying to get back home to her son. Triangle provides one of the smartest and most intriguing entries to the horror genre in the past few years.
B
Really good movie!
A tense thriller with plenty of twist to keep you interested.A movie that keeps you guessing from start to finish. You don’t know just where the movie is going. Melissa George is great as always in this film. She bring a some sort of realism to this mind bending show.
What a mind f*ck. The actors played their small roles well. I’m not a fan of the main character, but trying to figure out what is going on? draws you in. Although the movie was intended to be repetitive at times, i found it a little drawn out. This wasn’t very scary, but had a very clear message at the end. I love a horror movie with a twist, and this movie has an ending that hits home.
This film is so bad that makes me wonder how on earth they gave it the “green light”.It must have looked a lot better in paper but as a movie it bites the dust really hard. Melisa George throughout her very uneven carreer has always been better on tv (ALIAS) than on film (Turistas was also pretty embarassing), with 30 days of night being the sole exception. Sadly this film is so direction-less and without any purpose, that can only scare you with it’s epic boredom.
It is basically an “abandoned ship” thriller where the main caracter moves forward and gets caught in a “time loop” which causes her to face herself.Up to that the viewer has to wonder, “and why should I care about this cardboard typical single mother character with a problem child, the better of which I have seen 1000 times all ready”… The story is as cliche as can be, full of fake turns and “surprises”, the acting is generally lousy and all characters one dimensional and boring. The “action” on the ghost ship starts very early on but the film is basically static. If this film had hints of comedy/ slapstick it could have been better, but facing all this mess with a serious tone makes it even more unbearable. On to of that the ending which I will not reveal makes everything even worse and that’s a sad acheivement actually…
The obvious question the viewer will have from watching this film will be “what were they thinking?” or more appropriately “were they thinking?” This is a “boo” movie where the director thinks that some “fake” scares will make a big impact. Guess what… It fails…
Watched on netflix, its interesting, nothing super special but interesting enough story to keep you midly amused.
Its not going to change your life nor are the deaths especially cool. But well made and effective thriller.
I totally loved this movie. I’ve been wanting to see it for ages and finally got around to it. It was amazing, and I didn’t guess the last sort of twist until like 2 seconds before it happened, which I dunno if that makes me stupid, or if it makes it good. I just really liked it, it was scary and twisty and weird and not what I was expecting. Awesome.
It was a solid idea and well Directed, but it did tend to get boring in parts and of course repetitive. At least he is trying new ideas. I’ll definitely keep watching his movies.
Timecrimes anyone? This movie definately falls short of brilliant, lacks logic and any type of resolution. It will probably leave you going: “what was the point of this film, anyway?” At the same time, it’s intelligent, demands your attention, is semi original and is well acted. Frustrating because it makes no sense, worth watching because its thought provoking.
all i can say bout this movie, boring zzzzzzzzz
I love Melissa George despite her always being in mediocre horror films. This one is one of the better films she’s been in. Give this one a watch, you won’t be disappointed.
A twisted and clever tale that will keep you engaged and emotionally invested the entire time. It should have got a better release.
I had to see this movie twice to understand it and yet I think I left with some doubts. Anyway, it’s a very good movie, interesting and full of unexpected twists. It is a movie that takes a big risk and still end doing well. With good performances and well filmed.
It was just like Timecrimes except it didn’t have a time machine. Even though it was the same almost it was a lot better than Timecrimes. I liked it.
Over hyped junk the acting is beyond bad, the captain of the boat accent change from australian to american more times than the film repeated itself.
Stupid! Totally predictable! Can’t believe how hyped this movie was!
SPOILER ALERT! If I have this correct – and I have only seen it once – the heroine dies in a car crash before the action of the film even begins. I am wondering if the “driver” in black who conveniently shows up isn’t actually Death. M.G. stands
miraculously unscathed from this horrific car wreck, which is clearly impossible. So I feel she must be in Purgatory for abusing her autistic son.
But I need to see it again…
Carnival of Souls was better.
twilight zone-ish tale, loved it, unpredictable, original, awesome
Friends of mine insisted I watch this film. I knew nothing about Triangle and the experience blew me away. It was better because I really did not know what was going to happen. It reminded me of that film ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ when half way through, the whole film suddenly turned down a road you did not expect. There is so much going on in this gem of a movie. I have seen it three times. Every time you notice something else. It is confusing at first but stay with it. I thought it was quite clever. Unfortunately not many people have seen it, it went under the radar. I have noticed it has been on television several times here in the UK.
It stars Melissa George who used to be in âe~Home and Awayâe(TM) and you may have seen her in that brilliant television series âe~The Slapâe(TM). She is a very good actress. ‘Triangle’ is directed by Christopher Smith who gave us the excellent âe~Creepâe(TM) which you may recall created a hostile atmosphere within the London underground system.
The story is about Jess (Melissa George) who is confused, telling her colleagues (when they are all on a comfy little boat trip) she has been there before. Her confusion and concern is a great start to this film. I was a bit cocky watching this film, second guessing where the story was going, my advice is just go with the flow and do your best not to read anything before viewing. The bloody Blu-ray box cover almost tells you everything! After the film I had some questions I needed answering, so I carried out some online investigation….if you do catch this great film and end up feeling slightly unintelligent and confused like I did, let me know and Iâe(TM)ll put you right. As an actor myself I would love to work with Mr Smith the director, his imagination and sense of pace in a scene is dead on target for me. There are some respectful influences here from other films, let me know which ones you reckon they are. I recommend the Blu-ray version of course. By the way âe~The making of Triangleâe(TM) is also interesting.
My final words about this film is this: If you have experienced those dreams where you are running, but not going anywhere, or calling to someone for help and they canâe(TM)t hear you, and you are so close to them, screaming out with no response….that feeling of sheer frustration will ignite inside you when watching this thrilling film. By the way my film club mates really liked it as well! ….Just one question; why do you think the films title is named ‘Triangle’?…after you see it let me know.
