Red hill is the debut film from director Patrick Hughes and produced by my favorite director Greg Mclean. I have been looking forward to this film for awhile and im pretty glad I did. I’ll start off by saying this film is no where near perfect. If your looking for No country for old men in Australia you won’t completley find it here. Instead you get solid characters and action along with fantastic cinematography. Although it feels to go to fast at times and skips a bit of character development, you really mostly do care about the main character and his journey. One gripe is that the film is a bit predictable. But I was able to forgive that beacause of all the other likeable elements that come in to play. The action is sudden and suspenseful and the scenery is down right gorgeous. Also, theres a scene in the movie and a seperate scene after the credits featuring a black panther in the movie. I’m not full aware of what it represents but it is very powerful and adds another layer to the film. I’m glad they included it. Red Hill deserves to be seen. It’s a new age Australian western that pays omage to the classics and adds a new age flare to the formula that packs a pretty powerful punch. Definetley check it out.

Red Hill is a great debut film by Patrick Hughes. The actions in your face, the score is perfect, and the cinematography is breathtaking. My only gripe with it is the main actor. Kinda gay. And it seemed cliched a bit. The whole shy, young rookie cop turned into Clint Eastwood badass. Yeah I really didn’t like that. But the convict is absolutely a awesome. That’s something we can all agree on. All In All, Red Hill is pretty badass and I highly recommend it.
This movie is a lot of fun to watch. There are a few cheesy lines along the way, but they only add to the film. Definitely worth a rental.
Amazing.
really fun and then by the end it got surprisingly powerful. pretty damn solid
Fast paced western style revenge story that is engaging for the most part…except for a laughably odd sidebar concerning a black panther–can’t make heads or tails of what that was about. Nice turn by Bisley as the a-hole captain, and the rest are decent enough. The rousing and revelatory finale is where the meat of the movie is at, but the means to get there are engaging enough to not lose focus. Not in a league with The Horseman, Dead Man’s Shoes, or Oldboy, but still watchable retribution fare.
it’s really good until the bad guy shows up. i don’t know. kinda felt that it just lost all it’s steam and became kinda boring once the action kicked in. it was beautifully shot and very well acted though.
thought that this was completely stupid and boring. there was at least 10 different times that the bad guy should have just been shot and killed. this is a total waste of time.
Strong debut effort from new director Patrick Hughes that was appropriately atmospherically shot, perfect pacing, solid acting, simple but grabbing, shattering revenge story and enough action and suspense to satisfy anyone. This gem of a find effectively blends the elements of a brutal thriller with the roughness and rawness of a lean and mean western with a sprinkle of a revenge/slasher flick that’s much appreciated here as it’s all too rare to see a cool little flick like this make it work so easily as this one. The villain in this is pretty grotesque looking but at the same time bad ass and very clever but kind of reminds me of Maniac Cop meets the quiet menacing vibe of Anton Chigurh from No Country For Old Men as he doesn’t waste any time getting down and dirty but the more you get to know his backstory the more human he becomes. The director is really a talent to look out for as he films the raw nature of Australia like a champ and made the viewing experience quite memorable and has a skillful restraint but goes for it like a bat out of hell when it’s time to get to business especially during the more tense and suspenseful scenes. It’s a shame that this film didn’t have a wide theatrical release as it clearly has enough meat to gain peoples attention and has a talented cast a crew and decent production value and definitely deserves more admiration and notice than what it got. Overall when the final showdown takes place it was satisfying and bittersweet but could of been more powerful but as a whole it has to be one the best modern western I’ve seen and one entertaining, thrilling one at that and I recommend it if you like westerns but not straight up and if you like a good old fashioned revenge flick as you will most likely dig this. See it! 7.9 out of 10

Great flick, some stupid parts, overall ok
