Having seen the original I was curious what they could do with this remake. The original to me was good but IMO it wasn’t anything special besides the great gore effects by Tom Savini but still a good horror film. First off Elijah Wood played his psycho roll pretty good but its just that he just doesn’t look like a intimidating guy like the one from the original, nevertheless, he did act the part out well. I personally think its just as good if not alittle better than the original. The kills were brutal and the effects good. I also loved the 80s type music they played and really worked well with the story. A bit slow at times but it does deliver a decent amount of gore for gorehounds like myself. They also stayed true to the original which is always a good thing. The first person thing was cool but alittle monotonous I wanted to see some things form the outside in not from his POV constantly. Other than that a well made remake that does deserve at least one viewing. I knew it would be good with Alex Aja handling the writing and screenplay. Hes a great horror director and writer.

A movie, which is a trailblazer! Watch it, if you want to get into a serial killer’s shoes and see his life unfold bit by bit, layer by layer. His dreams, his nightmares, his life.Shudder or relish at some of the kills;sly tears creep out in anguish and pain. Its just a heavenly hell ride into the vortex of a man’s evil soul. Yes we all felt for Norman Bates, when the car got stuck in the mud. Do you remember? We pined for him. What other’s have simply touched, Maniac goes overboard. Here you become a serial killer for an hour or more. Experience his world and feel what he feels. Masterpiece is an understatement. This is the most singular piece of daangerous work I have ever seen in my whole life. Its horrifying art in it’s finest form. The original is still amazing and will stay carved foreever in our hearts come what may as the shot gun scene is not there, inspite of all the brilliant shots.Otherwise Maniac 2013 is a rare work of art, which supercedes its source material by fathoms and miles and leagues and light years.

The only two stinkers I could think of. Elijah Woods just looks a lil too angelic and non-intimidating. So we do get enagaged by the brutality but need to suspend our disbelief in certain scenes and which ghost town is this where all women keep running through the streets and there is not even a soul there. I know every horror movie has these kinds of premises, but Maniac seem so real that these clinched surroundings leading a lamb to a slaughter sometimes weigh you down.

However still what else? – we will look at 2013 and say we were winded down by this haymaker of a brilliant movie. Maniac is frigging brilliant!!! Aja Rules and P2 is forgotten for Franck Khalfoun.

Finally the score by Rob is a Diamond! Its cuts you with the synth score, which is so Goblin!!! Jio Guru! Awesome Boss!!!

Official Score: 4.5 / 5
