‘In the Deep’: The Weirdest Thing Just Happened With the Newest Shark Thriller Starring Mandy Moore

IN THE DEEP

Something truly bizarre just took place that I’m quite sure I’ve never seen happen in the 15 years of Bloody Disgusting.

Back in 2014 Dimension Films acquired 47 Meters Down, which stars Mandy Moore and Claire Holt as a pair of cage-diving sisters whose boat breaks away from them, leaving them in an observation cage trapped at the bottom of the ocean, surrounded by hungry Great Whites.

Last month Dimension Films announced a home video release (Aug. 2), while also renaming it to In the Deep, bizarrely the original title to this summer’s other shark survival film, The Shallows.

But here’s where things get weird: I have a physical copy (DVD) of In the Deep in my possession, and even had a review slated to drop today (it’s now live). Yet, this morning, Deadline is writing that Freestyle Media has acquired the film with plans to release in 2,500 theaters sometime in 2017. Yes, just a week before release, Freestyle picked up a movie that was to be dumped onto home video, and will launch it into theaters. I have never seen anything like this happen.

In my review I note that it’s a disappointment that In the Deep, now reverting back to 47 Meters Down, isn’t getting a theatrical bow. In light of the box office success that The Shallows had earlier this summer ($65 million on a $17 million budget), it makes a tremendous amount of sense to roll the dice on In the Deep / 47 Meters Down next summer as well, and I’m beyond excited about that.

THR reports that Entertainment Studios bought the finished film for seven figures from Dimension, adding that the move comes as the financially strapped Weinstein brothers have begun to sell off some of their films.

47 Meters Down is a new shark thriller directed by Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of The Door), and stars Mandy Moore (“This Is Us,” A Walk To Remember), Claire Holt (“The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals”), Yani Gellman (“Pretty Little Liars,” “The Young And The Restless”), and Matthew Modine (Full Metal JacketThe Dark Knight Rises).

“ ‘In The Deep’ dives into a world of two sisters (Mandy Moore and Claire Holt) who become trapped at the bottom of the ocean when a diving expedition to observe sharks goes horribly wrong. When the cable attaching the observation cage to the boat breaks and the cage sinks to the bottom of the ocean, the sisters must figure out a way to get back to safety battling injuries, lack of oxygen, and, worst of all, blood thirsty, great white sharks.”

The Final Destination franchise is returning to life with Final Destination: Bloodlines. With filming now underway, THR reports that three actors have joined the lead cast, including “Chucky” actor Teo Briones.

Brec Bassinger (“Stargirl”) and Kaitlyn Santa Juana (The Friendship Game) join Teo Briones, who played Junior Wheeler in season two of “Chucky,” as the leads in the sixth installment of the horror franchise.

Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Freaks) are directing the fresh installment that also includes Richard Harmon (“The 100”, Grave Encounters 2), Anna Lore, Owen Patrick Joyner, Max Lloyd-Jones (The Book Of Boba Fett), Rya Kihlstedt (Obi Wan Kenobi), and Tinpo Lee (The Manor) among the cast.

Production is now underway in Vancouver.

What can we expect from the upcoming Final Destination 6? Speaking with Collider, franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick offered up an intriguing (and mysterious) tease last year.

“This film dives into the film in such a unique way that it attacks it from a different angle so you don’t feel like, ‘Oh, there’s an amazing setup and then there’s gonna be one wrinkle that can potentially save you all that you have to kind of make a moral choice about or do to solve it.’ There’s an expansion of the universe that – I’m being so careful,” Reddick teased.

Reddick continued, “It kind of unearths a whole deep layer to the story that kind of, yes, makes it really, really interesting.”

Final Destination: Bloodlines is written by Lori Evans Taylor (“Wicked Wicked Games”) and Guy Busick (Scream), with Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) producing.

Producers on the new movie for New Line Cinema also include Dianne McGunigle (Cop Car) as well as Final Destination producers Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.

This will be the sixth installment in the hit franchise, and the first in over ten years. Each film centers on “Death” hunting down young friends who survive a mass casualty event.

The latest entry is expected in 2025, coinciding with the original film’s 25th anniversary.
