‘Rings’ Trailer Shows Samara’s Unique New Ways to Haunt Her Victims
I was way ahead of the J-horror curve, seeing Ringu even before it was remade here in the States. It’s one of the best J-horror franchises, with the U.S. The Ring being an all-time horror great. Director Gore Verbinski went on to direct the Pirates of the Caribbean films, as well as Fox’s upcoming A Cure For Wellness, while Samara was cursed into a god-awful sequel, The Ring Two.
Now, Paramount Pictures is behind Rings, which brings upon the return of Samara, the haunt (played by Bonnie Morgan) who comes after anyone that watches the franchise’s cursed video, which is now going viral.
Here’s a brand new trailer that explains the curse of Samara to younger viewers, being that it has been a whopping 14 years since The Ring scared theatergoers shitless. The rules are simple; if you watch the video, you’ll die in seven days. The only way to lift the curse is to “share Samara’s story” – which would be by having someone else watch the video. The Ring was a bit ahead of its time as the video was on VHS and translated more to the idea of a chain letter. In 2017, however, Samara’s curse can go viral, infecting millions in mere seconds. The footage promises some really cool imagery; I especially love the shot of “Big Bang Theory’s” Johnny Galecki starring out his window only to see flashes of the cursed well flicker through lightning.

A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…
Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, and Bonnie Morgan star.
Penned by David Loucka and Jacob Estes and Akiva Goldsman, Rings is the third film in The Ring franchise, which began with the 2002 J-horror remake that was directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). A sequel was released in 2005.
Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) is staying busy here in 2024, directing not only the werewolf movie Big Bad but also an upcoming thriller titled Drop.
The project for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes is being described as a “fast-paced thriller,” and Deadline reports today that Violett Beane (Truth or Dare) has joined the cast.
Newcomer Jacob Robinson has also signed on to star in the mysterious thriller. Previously announced, Meghann Fahy (“White Lotus”) will be leading the cast.
Landon recently teased on Twitter, “This is my love letter to DePalma.”
Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach wrote the script.
Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller and Cameron Fuller — “who brought the script in to Platinum Dunes” — are producing the upcoming Drop. Sam Lerner is an executive producer.
THR notes, “The film is a Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse production for Universal.”
