[Academy Awards] Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ and Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water’ Nominated for Best Picture!

This morning the Acadamy announced the Oscar nominations for the 90th annual awards from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif. There’s finally a reason to watch for the first time since The Silence of the Lambs was nominated back in 1992…

Whether or not Guillermo del Toro‘s The Creature From the Black Lagoon-inspired The Shape of Water is horror doesn’t matter because it lives in our genre. It’s a monster movie that harkens back to the early Universal horror films that paved the way for Leatherface, Michael, Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Pinhead, Jigsaw, and many more. With that said, del Toro’s fantasy has been nominated for a whopping 13 Acadamy Awards, including “Best Picture”, “Best Director” and “Best Original Screenplay”!

That’s just the icing on the cake, as we’re dancing over here at Bloody Disgusting headquarters celebrating the Academy for recognizing the greatness of Jordan Peele‘s Get Out, which is most definitely not a comedy. Well, guess what? Not only was Peele nominated for “Best Director”, but Get Out was nominated for “Best Picture” and star Daniel Kaluuya was nominated for “Best Lead Actor”! The great Hollywood horror takeover continues!

Jordan Vogt-RobertsKong: Skull Island also picked up a nomination for “Best Visual Effects”, while Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049 was nominated for “Cinematography”, “Sound Editing”, “Sound Mixing”, and “Production Design”!

Jimmy Kimmel hosts the Acadamy Awards that will air on ABC March 4th.
