This past weekend John Landis attended the HorrorHound Weekened in Pittsburgh to meet and greet with tons of horror fans. While hanging out with Bloody-Disgusting we had the chance to talk a bit about a possible remake to his classic An American Werewolf In London, which will be arriving on Blu-ray with the documentary BEWARE THE MOON sometime in 2009. In brief, Landis exclaimed with excitement "I would do it, sure!" telling us that there have been a wide range of talks over the years. What is really comes down to is licensing the character rights, which Landis owns. So for those of you who want a remake, there is a good chance it'll eventually happen. In the film two American tourists in England are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists.
The FX still hold up, and why fuck with a classic? Oh I forgot, capitalism and greed have a funny way of clouding even the most creative of minds. That and Johnny boy needs to rebound from Blues Brothers 2000.
A classic that shows the new school how special effects should be done.Improving the best werewolf movie ever? Impossible. The transformation scene is something special that can never be captured with CGI.
I agree with most the above comments. The original was so groundbreaking with the special effects that it would be hard to do that better. It's the same way I feel about John Carpenter's "The Thing". The effects were so awesome and still hold up today. But how can anyone be shocked about a remake to any movie at this point. Everything is vulnerable.
Why don't they remake movies that were crap to begin with, then they have a chance to improve on old ideas. Leave good and the great alone. Though have to admit I am shocked theres not a Jaws remake or sequel looming out there...
oh course they'll remake this. it brings in a lot of big bucks and nobody had to hurt his brain by trying to come-up with something remotely original. just a shame Landis will be involved, I always thought he would never stoop to this level.
I Think A Remake Would Only Damage The Outstanding Original. I Know Mr Landis Is Probably Looking To Break Back In To The Horror Genre, But, Please John! Leave well enough alone..:)
Bad morning, I concur with my fellow Gore-hounds. Landis would be a shitsoaked sponge-cake to do such a thing. AWIL is in my top 10 all-time terror trips. The transformation is a given, but the scenes at the Slaughtered Lamb are priceless. The five-pointed star shrine, the strange atmosphere. The looks on the people's faces when Jack asks about the star on the wall. Not to mention when we hear the werewolf howl for the first time. In my opinion, that's the best werewolf sound-effect ever. Some great lines in that scene: "You can't let them go", "Stick to the road, keep clear of the moors" "Go, God be with ya'", "Beware the moon lads". Those are timeless moments in horror cinema. The countryside, even in daylight, emitted a threatening quality. Knowing if the beast came for you, there's no where to go. Just wide open country with no place to hide. A classic that shouldn't be screwed with. That's how I see it!!! Keep the lights out & the screams guttural. "Perhaps they'll be safe in the rain"---American Werewolf in London.
I agree that they should not remake this. Maybe make a sequal then if it sucks it sucks on its own. Don't try and compete with the original or screw the new crop out of the idea of one part 1.
If you're gonna dabble with AWIL, make a film about Jack & David's attacker. The place obviously has a history, so why not tell the origins of the werewolf in that town. Then tell the story of how Jack & David's attacker became a werewolf. Might make a good movie & it would keep the spirit of the original intact. One more thing, Nurse Price was a damn sexy gal!!! "A naked american man stole my balloons"---AWIL.
Such an amazing movie, one of the few that actually scared me (I saw this when I was 7). Don't touch it! It's already perfect as it is. "If it aint broken, don't fix it!"
As we discovered with An American Werewolf in Paris, Landis is a one-trick pony. His sequel/remake was a CGI-drenched lame excuse for a comedy, and that's exactly what a remake would be as well.
This will be very interesting to see. I love this movie!
