Joss Whedon Goes Cryptic on MTV

Published

BUFFY, ANGEL and SERENITY fans have been on the edge of their seat waiting for Joss Whedon’s next project to get off the ground. Today MTV checked in with the writer-director-producer about a bunch of projects that have been in development, including GONERS and a new film entitled CABIN IN THE WOODS. Good luck trying to break through his cryptic speak, only time will tell just how horror (if at all) WOODS is.
Joss Whedon revealed to MTV this evening that his is currently working on a new project with BUFFY alum and CLOVERFIELD scribe Drew Goddard entitled CABIN IN THE WOODS.

It’s genius, it’s funny,” Goddard tells MTV. “It’s got a harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities. It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time.” But what is it about? Good lucky breaking this code. “There’s a reason the title is so straightforward,” Goddard teased. “It’s its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It’s fresh and new.

WHEDON also talked a bit about the previously announced film GONERS, which was to be an original story, a horror-fantasy, “a little darker than I’m used to,” about a young woman who gains some powers. “Not something I’ve written about before,” he joked, “but I’m excited to try some new territory.” Universal, however, has not been quite as excited just yet, as “Goners” “has gotten backburnered,” Whedon told MTV, meaning it’s still in development. “I still have hope for it, though.

Here’s a brief explanation of what GONERS is about courtesy of whatismiamadeof. “A fantasy thriller about a modern day girl who goes on a really strange ride,” said Joss Whedon. “It’s about a girl named Mia, people know that, who sort of sees in a mystical way the underbelly of the city and of human society, and goes through a kind of extraordinary hell, and we all have a lot of fun in the process. …This is much more a story about — literally about human connection and whether or not it’s possible. … But it’s told on a very mystical scale and, in a way like everything I’ve tried to do including Buffy, it’s an antidote to that very kind of film, the horror movie with the expendable human beings in it. Because I don’t believe any human beings are.”

Dan Stevens is everywhere lately, from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to Abigail and the upcoming Cuckoo. We’re not complaining. Up next? He’s starring in horror movie The Ritual.

Al Pacino and Dan Stevens have both joined the cast of the upcoming exorcism horror movie from XYZ Films and director David Midell, Variety reports this afternoon.

Based on a true story, the film “follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms.”

Variety details, “The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.”

David Midell and Enrico Natale wrote the screenplay for The Ritual.

XYZ Films is planning to release the horror film theatrically in 2025.
