Horror In Your House: May 23, 2011

Published

on

This weeks brings us several older flicks being released on DVD including minor classics that aren’t readily available in Burn, Witch, Burn and The Mummy’s Revenge (starring Paul Naschy). Two After Dark Originals are also being released by Lionsgate, Fertile Ground and the impressive horror flick about twins titled Seconds Apart. On a semi-related note, if you live in Los Angeles stop buying all the copies of Aliens on Blu-ray. I’ve been to several locations and they are always sold out. I know someone out there is hoarding them. All I ask is you save one copy for me, please! Anyway, hope you all have a great week.

BLOOD BATH (TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE) – MGM

Notorious Roger Corman production tells the terror-filled tale of a Venice, Ca., artist (William Campbell) who believes he’s the reincarnation of a 15th-century vampire and begins killing women by dipping them into molten wax and painting their bodies. Moody amalgamation of director Jack Hill’s “Blood Bath,” a Yugoslavian vampire film and new footage shot by Stephanie Rothman co-stars Marissa Mathes, Sandra Knight, and Jonathan Haze. 62 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English.

MICAH SAYS: This has all the markings of classic Corman. He bought one flick and combined it with a different movie, shot a few more scenes and threw in Sid Haig (in one of his first horror roles) as a guy named Abdul the Arab for good measure. Oddly, it’s an entertaining mess and given the degree of difficulty of finding it on DVD this would be a good time to pick it up.

BURN, WITCH, BURN – MGM

Peter Wyngarde is living a charmed life, with a caring wife and a promising career as a college professor. Things take a bizarre turn when he finds out that spouse Janet Blair is a witch whose voodoo practices are responsible for his success. When he forbids her from using any more witchcraft, his job-and their lives-become jeopardized in this chiller based on Fritz Leiber’s “Conjure Wife.” AKA: “Night of the Eagle.” 89 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English.

DEATH HUNTER: WEREWOLVES VS. VAMPIRES – MTI Home Video

In a forgotten region of the desert, an unspeakable evil exists. By no choice of his own, John Croix will come face-to-face with the most terrifying creatures of the dark night. Equipped with the power of the werewolf and newfound faith his mission is to save mankind from certain doom.

FERTILE GROUND (After Dark Original) – Lions Gate

Emily and Nate Weaver leave the city for the rural comfort of Nate’s ancestral home in the country. Once there, Emily is plagued by horrifying visions and haunted by the ghosts inhabiting their isolated new home. When Nate’s behavior undergoes a strange and fearful metamorphosis, Emily fears she might be the latest target in a murderous tradition.

FINAL ENCOUNTER – Echo Bridge Entertainment

This action-packed sci-fi thriller sends Hollywood favorites Dean Cain (Out of Time) and Thomas Ian Griffith (xXx) into a do-or-die battle for survival as humankind faces a showdown with its own worst enemy. On a distant planet, two human colonies were founded as a civilized outpost far removed from the devastating wars of Earth. But it was a dream that didn’t last long. Locked in a brutal hundred-year war, the colonies now battle each other amidst the rubble of their once-great cities. With only remnants of their immense technologies and their vast armies reduced to a few, a group of brave soldiers decides it’s time to step up and end the fighting before both sides are pushed into extinction.

FORGET ME NOT – Phase 4 Films

It’s graduation weekend, and Sandy Channing, the popular class president of her small-town high school, should be enjoying the time of her life. But when her friends start disappearing, Sandy discovers they have unwittingly awakened the vengeful spirit of a girl they wronged long ago. Fighting for her sanity and her life, Sandy must unlock a dark secret from her own past before it’s too late.

THE MUMMY’S REVENGE – MGM

Some people get all wrapped up in living; this fellow got all wrapped up in death! Now he’s back, and he needs the blood of virgin females to stay “alive.” Horror legend Paul Naschy (who also wrote the script) stars in a dual role, playing both the bandaged baddie and the high priest who engineers his chilling rebirth. With Jack Taylor, Maria Silva. Soundtrack: English (dubbed). Dubbed in English.

MICAH SAYS: I love almost anything with Paul Naschy. If you have never experienced a Naschy film, but love ridiculous and cheesy films with a foreign flair, do yourself a favor and watch a few of his movies (The Werewolf vs. Vampire Woman, The Night of the Werewolf).

SECONDS APART (After Dark Original) – Lions Gate

Seth and Jonah are murderous twins who share an evil kinship. Damned from the moment of their births, the brothers possess a gruesome talent for telekinesis – a power they use in the most horrific ways imaginable. As their fellow students meet gory fates, the local law enforcement begins to suspect the twins’ connection to some depraved murders. What started as a jealous rage escalates into a supernatural showdown – pitting brother against brother, evil against evil.

MICAH SAYS: In a slow week it doesn’t take much to be the pick of the week, but even in a much stronger week this one would win out in many cases. I mean c’mon, what’s not to like about twins that use their mind control powers for evil? Check it out.
