R-Rated ‘Prometheus’ Blasts Off At Box Office, Wins Per Screen Average

As much as I enjoyed Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, I’m overwhelmingly excited that this will probably be the final post regarding the film, ‘cept when Twentieth Century Fox announces the sequel.

We haven’t done a box officie report in quite some time, and that’s mostly because horror has not been swimming in the green. And while Prometheus is technically sci-fi, it is based in the horror subgenre, and a prequel to Scott’s Alien. It more than warranted the several hundred posts here on Bloody.

Enough spinning the wheels; Fox’s sci-fi epic, starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris and Guy Pearce, took the #2 box office spot with an estimated $50 million opening, an incredible weekend for an R-rated film. It should also be noted that it has a better per screen average than Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, the number 1 movie in America, and played in a thousand less theaters. It’s “technically” the winner. In addition, upon doing some research, Prometheus has already toppled $141 million worldwide. This is considered a success, and a sequel is expected.

For those of you who saw the movie this weekend, join other Bloody readers by writing your own review to tell us all what YOU thought!

It’s not an “R” in Canada though. Here it’s rated 14A, but U.S. and Canada ratings always vary. If it gets an “R” here, it has to be pretty disturbing, graphic, sex filled, drug laden etc. I’ll be seeing it at the IMAX in a couple days. Looking forward to it.

Awesome news, I am so glad this did amazing, it’s nice to see hollywood stills makes thought provoking sci-fi films such as this. Hope to see more films made that lead up to alien, that’ll be awesome, like make a movie that ties into ALIEN, or remake it only and I mean ONLY if Scott does it. BUt that won’t happen but I hope he can still make films that lead up it and films that lead off after it :) Maybe even do a film that has to do predator too.
