It’s 2011 and the first releases of the New Year are here. And while December was mostly a letdown January promises to be much better. And in the month that studios tend to drop their worst films in theaters (See: Legion in 2010, The Unborn in 2009), January isn’t a bad month to add a few films to your home library. This weeks’ list is led by the duo of The Last Exorcism and Robert Rodriguez’s Machete. Other notables include the Renee Zellweger vehicle Case 39 and another cheap knock off from The Asylum, 8213: Gacy House.Horror In Your House

BITTER FEAST – MPI Home Video
A celebrity chef turns the tables on his harshest critic. Peter Grey (James Le Gros), an overly zealous television chef kidnaps J.T. Franks (Joshua Leonard), an influential and notoriously snarky food blogger after a particularly nasty review deals the final blow to Grey s already plummeting career. Sequestered deep in the woods of the Hudson Valley, Grey keeps Franks chained up in a basement, presenting him with a series of deceptively simple food challenges – from preparing a perfect egg over easy, to grilling a steak precisely medium rare – punishing him sadistically for anything less than total perfection. A tense thrill-ride served up with wicked wit and culinary flare, BITTER FEAST is an exploration of the creative impulse gone tragically and ferociously awry.
CASE 39 (Blu-ray/DVD) – Paramount
Academy Award® winner Renee Zellweger stars in this terrifying, supernatural thriller about a social worker who has been assigned the unusual and disturbing case of Lillith Sullivan…a girl with a strange and mysterious past. When Emily (Renee Zellweger) opens her home in an attempt to help Lillith, it turns into a deadly nightmare she may not survive. Co–starring Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Case 39 is a heart-stopping chiller with startling surprises that lead to a shocking and sinister ending.
MICAH SAYS: Mr. D says this is the worst film of 2010. Personally, I like the fact that (SPOILER) Brad Cooper dies a ridiculous and painful death in this film. Any movie with that dude getting killed can’t be that bad, right?
8213: GACY HOUSE (Blu-ray/DVD) – Platinum Disc
John Wayne Gacy murdered 33 young men and boys between 1972 and 1978 in suburban Chicago. 26 bodies were found in a crawl space beneath his house and 3 others were buried in the backyard. Although the house was completely demolished during the exhumation of the bodies, on May 15, 2004 a group of paranormal investigators wired the home that was built in its place with paranormal detection and surveillance equipment. The outcome of the investigation was grisly, terrifying and disturbing.
FRIGHT FLICK – Vicious Circle Films
Director Isreal Luna weaves this hair-raising tale of a low-budget film crew being stalked by a vicious slasher. The director is a hack who’s obsessed with the lead actress, the producer is forced to swallow his pride instead of getting credit where credit is due, and the supporting actress is jealous that she didn’t land the lead. It seems that virtually everyone on the crew has something to be upset about, and as tensions begin to mount on-set one person in particular allows their anger to erupt into a murderous rage. They say that life in the entertainment industry can be murder, and it seems that someone on this film crew has taken that old adage as inspiration.
THE LAST EXORCISM (Blu-ray/DVD) – Lionsgate
When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer, the Reverend Cotton Marcus expects to perform just another routine “exorcism” on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist, Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort, certain his teenage daughter Nell is possessed by a demon who must be exorcized before their terrifying ordeal ends in unimaginable tragedy. Buckling under the weight of his conscience after years of parting desperate believers from their money, Cotton and his crew plan to film a confessionary documentary of this, his last exorcism. But upon his arrival at the already blood-drenched family farm, it is soon clear that nothing could have prepared him for the true evil he encounters there. Now, too late to turn back, Reverend Marcus’ own beliefs are shaken to the core as he and his crew must find a way to save Nell – and themselves – before it is too late.
MACHETE (Blu-ray/DVD) – 20th Century Fox
From director Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Sin City) comes an action-packed, cutting-edge serving of carnage asada…with killer deleted scenes that deliver more guns, more girls and more Machete action! Set up, double-crossed and left for dead, Machete (Danny Trejo) is an ass-kicking ex-Federale who lays waste to anything that gets in his path. As he takes on hitmen, vigilantes and a ruthless drug cartel, bullets fly, blades clash and the body count rises. Any way you slice it, vengeance has a new name–Machete.
MICAH SAYS: What is with this business about Jessica Alba’s nudity being digitized (fake) for this film? A woman faking something sexual. That never happens!
WOLVESBAYNE – Millennium Media Services
Russell Bane (Jeremy London, ”Party of Five”) finds himself in the middle of a paranormal war between vampires, werewolves and human hunters after being viciously attacked by a werewolf. Overwhelmed by his own werewolf transformation, he seeks the help of the beautiful and mysterious Alex. Together they must stop the war before the exiled vampire goddess Lilith (Yancy Butler, ”Kick-Ass”) regains her strength and destroys all mankind.
