Film Deal Transpires in Aftermath of ‘Dead Island’ Trailer Hype

Published

on

Earlier this week we all had our minds blown by the announcement trailer for Dead Island, an open world video game in development by Techland for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The brutal and quite sad trailer flashes reverse footage of a zombie attack revealing the destruction of a family. Easily one of the most buzzed about games of the year, you can watch the footage inside (editor’s note: the footage and characters may not even represent the actual game).

I expected a film deal, but not this fast. Producer/Universal exec Sean Daniel (National Lampoon’s Animal House, Dazed and Confused, Tombstone, The Mummy, The Wolfman) scored film rights, reports Hitfix: “Daniel recently established The Sean Daniel Company, and they’re the ones who bought the rights to the game. Techland, the Polish developer for the game, has got to be dancing in the streets right now. This is a game that had been delayed and that had fallen off the radar after being announced a few years ago. As soon as that trailer, created by Axis Animation, popped up online, Dead Island went from ‘troubled game that’s taken forever to come out’ to ‘game everyone will play this fall because the awareness on it is gigantic.’

Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
