[Random Cool] A Revealing Look At Practical Effects In The New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie!

So there’s been a lot of back and forth about whether or not the new Evil Dead is 100% CGI free or if they’re just using a tiny bit here and there for things like wire removal and color grading. I was expecting them to use a tiny bit of it to cover up small stuff that considering we’re in the age when CGI is used to remove blemishes and occasionally slim down the star of a romantic comedy… but maybe not?

Now we’ve got a cool look at a gag that doesn’t cover up its practical nature in the Evil Dead trailer. Thanks to reader DJBlack1313 for pointing it out. You’ll notice a cleaned up version of it above (Edit: The image above is from the first red band teaser – the one inside is from the newer full length) and inside you can see a version of it that made it to the trailer where the tube is visible.

The Fede Alvarez-directed remake stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas. It hits theaters on April 12th, 2013. Be sure to read PART ONE and PART TWO of my set visit!

Head inside for a look at the pic!

I’ve brightened it a little bit. Go ahead and re-watch that scene in the trailer below, you’ll notice it’s still there!

The cleaned up image is from the first red band trailer. If you rewatch it you can see no traces of the tube, while in the second trailer the tube is present. Either way, nice find. I hadnt noticed it! So pumped for this

  • djblack1313

thanx Evan. yeah, i watched the trailers dozens of times and i never noticed the tubing from the 2nd trailer. the credit for the find goes to IMDB member ‘NightOfTheChickenDead’ who pointed it out to me and me to you. he has a really good eye for that kind of stuff. i’m surprised they didn’t CGI it out considering it’s from the 2nd trailer. but it IS a cool little thing for us practical fx junkies! 🙂

  • djblack1313

oh and Evan the cleaned up pic (no tubing) actually IS from the trailer. it’s from one of the screen grabs you guys posted. so it’s clearly a mistake on the trailer’s makers/filmmakers.

    • djblack1313

sorry i meant the cleaned up (no tubing) image is from the FIRST red band trailer (that had the green filter).

      • CorbinRaven

To be honest, though I can see the tubing now, I really don’t notice it at all in the trailer. Either way, this just gets me even more pumped up for this!

  • Aaron Emery

Perfect excuse to watch that trailer for the fiftieth time! I have no doubt that this film will be amazing and I have the utmost respect for the filmmakers for putting their care and dedication into this project.
I have watched this countless times (I’m pretty lame) and Jane Levy’s whisper gives me the fucking chills every time! Opiate withdrawal is terrifying to begin with (trust) add on the rest of this crazy shite this is going to be a dark fucking movie!

    • djblack1313

Aaron exactly! and in the script what’s interesting is that at first when Mia (post attack) is trying to convince the others that they are fucked and they should leave, her friends think it’s just her faking it/starting her withdrawals from heroin/imagining it. i like that flourish.

      • Aaron Emery

That’s kinda what I got from the “you have to get me out of here” thing. It almost looked pre-attack but she sounds genuinely horrified. I remember when the plot was announced to have a “drug subplot” everyone balked at the idea but I think it’s going to be super effective.

        • CorbinRaven

djblack1313 I also got a chance to read the script, and I am really excited about it! Definitely a great script for an Evil Dead film! The emphasis on drug usage and mixing it with possession sounds absolutely awesome on paper, and I can’t wait to see that idea fleshed out on screen!

          • djblack1313

CorbinRaven, DEFINITELY!!! what i really liked (a lot!) in the script was David & Eric’s strong friendship. they were like brothers (at least in the script). in fact all the characters (of the main bunch of kids) are VERY likeable!

  • Zombie-Killa

Ah, more tongue cutting pics. That’s what I wanna see! Keep up the good work Evan!

And LULZ at the look in her eyes in the second pic. I completely lost it when I opened this page.

April needs to come NOW! Seems this Evil Dead will revive a bit more the horror genre with a serious addition 🙂

  • ghostface06

I have a couple of questions!

    1) see the girls who chops her arm off and gets set on fire what order does that happen in i know that might sound stupid but in the trailer it looks like shes still got two arms when shes set on fire.

    2) i heard a rumor that when she gets set on fire shes possessed and the fire doesn’t kill her and she like walks around all possessed and still on fire is that true?

    • CorbinRaven

SPOILERS! I read the script and the two scenes you are speaking about are actually involving 2 different girls. I’m not gonna say more than that, but the one on fire and the one cutting her arm off are entirely separate characters.

      • djblack1313

Corbin, VERY good way of clarifying but not giving anything away! yo rule my friend! 🙂

  • HorrorFanJames

I saw this on IMDB,and it surprised me how I missed that since I have seen the preview so many times. That was a nice find but wonder if it will be edited out of the final version of the movie or left in.

    • djblack1313

      HI James!!!! 🙂

      • HorrorFanJames

Hey Dj,glad to see ya over here spreading the word about this little goof.I am surprised myself I never noticed it since I am obsessed with the red band trailer. But now it sticks out everytime I see it.

  • undertaker78

I’m like a junkie in need of their Evil Dead crack. I need this movie now!

I wish the haters would come to terms that there is no CGI in this movie. It just shows you cannot make some people happy no matter what.

    • doomas10

that’s the internet my friend! I am utterly convinced that this film is going to rock! To me it looks very practical and true to the spirit of the original. If it is @@ at the end oh well, but before that, I am supporting this 100%.

  • HorrorFanJames

I feel like undertaker78 I am like obsessed with this movie and I ain’t even seen it yet.Just looks so fantastic already.
