We’ve not entered day four of our Top 10 Nine Inch Nails Music Videos as a way to celebrate the upcoming release of How To Destroy Angels debut full-length album Welcome Oblivion (iTunes pre-order). If you head on down, you can see entry #7 as well as get links to 10, 9, and 8.

“Survivalism”

Album: Year Zero
Director: Alex Lieu, Rob Sheridan, and Trent Reznor

Playing out as one uninterrupted take, the video takes place in a security surveillance room and the camera pans from one surveillance screen to another. Some show people sitting and watching TV while some show people spraying graffiti on a brick wall. Still others show a SWAT-esque people getting ready to break into a room and a few show the band performing their song. As the video progresses, more and more of the screens turn into static, suggesting that whatever is being done should not be documented.

The marching rhythm of the drums mirrors the militaristic theme that is starkly prevalent in this video while Reznor’s chants of “I got my violence in hi-def ultra-realism!” echo the voyeuristic element of the viewer. The video ends on a very somber, sinister note with the body of one of the band members being dragged down a hallway, all based upon the orders of the “U.S. Bureau Of Morality”.

I think I can guess what’s going to be #2 and #1. I’ll be disappointed but not surprised if We’re In This Together isn’t there. Love the song but the video isn’t really anything special.

I’ll also be surprised if Happiness in Slavery is included. Brilliant video but almost everyone forgets about it.

I really tried to like the video for “We’re In This Together” but, just like you said, it wasn’t anything special.

What do you think #2 and #1 are going to be?

      • GreigShelob

I think Perfect Drug will be #2 and Closer will be #1.

Hurt (live) will probably be somewhere in the top 5 aswell. That’s an interesting video. Would have loved to see that live.

Some are wrong and some are right. Won’t say which though ;)
