[SXSW '13 Exclusive] Writer Rodo Sayagues On The Potential Sequel To ‘Evil Dead’! Also, Find Out Where You Can See The Movie Early!
FilmDistrict and TriStar’s Evil Dead just premiered last night at SXSW, and to say I enjoyed the film would be an understatement (review here). I just conducted an interview with the film’s co-writer Rodo Sayagues. While I’ll be sharing the entire interview later this week, I figured I’d go ahead and pop up some quick info on the sequel he is currently writing with Fede Alvarez.
In the new rebirth, “In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.” Directed by Fede Alvarez, the R-rated remake stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas.
Check out my review here! Head inside for the Evil Dead 2 update along with the dates for 29 city pre-release screening tour where you can see the movie early! MILD SPOILERS INSIDE!!
Last night you sort of announced a sequel, what can you share about that?
Fede and I are writing that now. We are in a very preliminary phase of that project, but yes we’re working on it. And it’s not gonna be a remake of the second Evil Dead. It’s going to directly follow this one and is going to be a whole different story.
So you don’t see the tone changing like it changed between the 1981 film and the 1987 film?
I think it’s going to be more like the second half of this film. It’s going to be more over the top. The escalation is going to continue.
Are we going to see Mia [Jane Levy] in it?
Oh we’re definitely going to see Mia!
So Jane Levy can look forward to more punishment then?
Oh yes! A lot more!
Be sure to turn in later in the week for the full interview. In the meantime, here are the dates for that 29 city tour. More details to follow!

I know it’s already said that Mia is the main character in this. But kind of a spoiler warning on the fact that she will be returning in the next one for the 99% of us who haven’t seen it yet.
Having not seen the film, it still doesn’t surprise me at all. I see her as the ‘Ash’ type character, so it wouldn’t have been farfetched to imagine her surviving.
Oh it’s not surprising, but still. It’s nice not to know for sure whether or not certain main characters survive or not. Especially within a genre which holds so much uncertainty for it’s protagonists….I see that there is a spoiler alert now, Evan if you had it up the whole time my apologies.
Yep I had it up there from the beginning, no worries!
En_Noir, even though i already knew that Mia was the survivor (of sorts……) in this i agree w/ you (this is NOT directed at Evan, it’s directed at the makes of this movie) that they shouldn’t have revealed a spoiler so publically in interviews about the planned sequel. IMO they should have NOT said who is or isn’t returning for said sequel. they could have easily said,
“WE ARE WORKING ON A SEQUEL TO THIS MOVIE, AND WE AREN’T SAYING ANYTHING ON CASTING/CHARACTERS, ETC”.
oops, i meant
“this is NOT directed at Evan, it’s directed at the MAKERS of this movie” (not “makes”). LOL.
Although it was pretty much a given (I have NOT read the script, jealous?) I wish I didn’t read that. I like the “not knowing” that goes with thee sorts of things!
So, how do we find out where the movie is playing in our respective states? I’m in Portlnad, Oregon and I can’t find anything and it’s only two days away!
I would like someone to spoil me the ominous post-credit sequence, but I guess that would be unfair towards the other readers…
Maybe someone sends me a message ?
You might could find out by scrolling the message boards on imdb.com. I know I saw something about it on there earlier today, but steared clear of it for fear of spoilers.
Thx for the tip ! I have to wait for this movie another 2 months at least and I already know some details, so I am just gonna spoil myself.
Can’t say that I blame you. I, myself, HATE spoilers, and try my hardest to learn as much about an upcoming film that I’m interested in without finding out something that I shouldn’t know. This proves to be difficult with the internet. I love knowing how this movie is made, and I’m glad to know that there’s something after the credits I can look forward to (considering I’m the kind of person who sits around and actually reads the credits at the end of a film), but, I didn’t want to know exactly what it was that is shown at the end. Different strokes for different folks, I guess, lol. Hope you found what you were looking for, though!
@ghetto werewolf
Sorry I could not answer to your post below me.
Thx very much, I found what I looked for ! Usually I am totally on your side, but I was already involuntarily spoiled about the ending, now I wanted to know it all ! Otherwise I try to watch a movie unspoiled too.
Hey, Evan, any chance you can let us know how to find out what theaters those advanced screenings will be at? The official site only lists the official opening date and is no help. Thanks!
NEW YORK on 3/28 OH YES. I need to see this early I really fuckin do.
You should’ve mentioned the Canadian dates for the pre-screenings too. It’s playing in Toronto this Thursday at Scotiabank theatre. Although it may only be for a contest you had to enter. There are lots of Canadians on this site too.
Us Canucks get the shaft lol.
typical
Do you want to watch a screening of the movie in Canada? Where are you located in Canada?
