[Comic-Con ’13] NECA Just Caused A Con Earthquake With This Announcement…

@NECA_TOYS wants toy fans to “Go Ape!”

Although more details are forthcoming, toy company NECA wasted no time creating massive Comic-Con buzz mere hours before the doors open.

Wednesday morning, the company sent a tweet to the masses with the following image teasing a brand new Planet of the Apes figure line.

As of this writing it’s unclear if it’s for Twentieth Century Fox’s forthcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and its predecessor Rise of the Planet of the Apes, or for the franchises original saga. The image, though, implies we’ll be seeing action figures based on the 1960’s-70’s franchise, including the Charlton Heston starrer Planet of the Apes (1968), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973).

More as the Comic-Con opens.

Being a child of the 70s, and a huge POTA fan as a kid, I remember that image as part of a “Go Ape” ad campaign in the mid-70s, promoting movie theaters/drive-ins showing all 5 films.

I think NECA is coopting the old image to tease their new toy line, but it’s not indicative of what the new toys will be, which are not likely to be based on the old franchise. If they did, the toys would be about as fashionable as Davey Crockett’s coonskin hat. So, I won’t be singing “Rock Me, Dr. Zeus” in anticipation of revisiting my childhood.
