The Woman in Black attended “The Walking Dead” roundtables at the San Diego Comic-Con, which revealed not only some casting news we hadn’t heard yet, but a few inklings of what’s in store for fans of the show come October, and a bit more info about the tone of Season 4.
First to join our table were new showrunner Scott Gimple, comics creator Robert Kirkman, and the dreaded Governor himself, David Morrissey. If you watched the new Season 4 trailer (and if you didn’t, do so immediately – we’ll wait) and have also read the comics, you probably noticed a lot of elements from them in the footage. Gimple’s philosophy in that regard is to incorporate big moments from the source material with different characters and different contexts but keep them recognizable. They have to change, of course, due to the fact that we have characters who are now dead but still living in the comics and vice versa as well as characters like Daryl who exist only in the TV world. While in San Diego for the 2013 Comic-Con, Bloody-Disgusting and Dread Central’s “thehorrorchick” had the opportunity to exclusively chat with director Gareth Edwards about all things Godzilla.
During our interview, we heard from Edwards about his initial feelings on being offered such an epic opportunity like Godzilla as a follow-up to his 2010 critically-acclaimed indie creature feature Monsters, his approach to balancing the tone and story of the film, his thoughts on the design of Godzilla and more. Mixing romance, suspense, mystery, and humor, the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated “True Blood” kicked off its sixth season June 16 on HBO. We now have the entire panel, which took place this past Saturday at the San Diego Comic-Con.
The series follows waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Oscar and Golden Globe award winner Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts and vampires Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).
This is the start of the panel and picks up right after the trailer was shown. Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse), showrunner Brian Buckner, Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte) Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica Hamby), Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam Sywnford de Beaufort), Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux), Anna Camp (Sarah Newlin), Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin) and Rob Kazinsky (Ben Flynn) appear on a panel at Comic Con 2013. NECA, who has been on fire this San Diego Comic-Con, had a little clarity as to what’s coming in the next year – most of which we’ll probably see prototypes by the 2014 New York Toy Fair.
In addition to landing the Godzilla line, and the possibility of a NEW Freddy Krueger on the horizon, NECA also revealed they had landed rights to do toys based on Planet of the Apes, but offered no explanation as to what exactly they were doing.
Some clarity came in via twitter, as it was explained that they “have the Apes license for both modern & classic” and are “planning on doing a lot with it. [It was a] fave since childhood.” So Apes fan expect a line featuring toys from Twentieth Century Fox’s forthcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and its predecessor Rise of the Planet of the Apes, as well as the Charlton Heston starrer Planet of the Apes (1968), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). AWESOME.
In other news, NECA plans to continue the Alien universe with 35th Anniversary figures based on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic. NECA revealed that they’re developing Dallas (Tom Skerritt) in spacesuit (above), as well as the cat Jones (nicknamed “Jonesy” by the crew). They’re also building out the Aliens line with Bishop and the big, bad Queen! Life. Is. Good. If only Sigourney Weaver would allow them to make Ripley… READ MORE
Erin La Rosa at Buzzfeed reports on an insanely cool concept car – a 3-Door Hyundai Veloster: Zombie Killer Edition – that was on the San Diego Comic-Con floor.
A spokesperson at Hyundai had this to say: “The Veloster Turbo is perfect for the zombie apocalypse— a couple of reasons: speed, obviously, being a turbo, lightweight. it’s a 3 door car, so the third door actually gives easy in easy out access for all the weaponry we’ve got on this thing.”
The concept car carries ankle level blades, spikes, and chainsaws, as well as a fully articulated turret that turns in 360 degrees on top of the car. There’s also electrified barbed wire over the windows!
The car isn’t street legal in any form, and it can’t be driven off the floor of SDCC.

Those who attended the San Diego Comic-Con were blessed with Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s “Godzilla Experience,” a warehouse transformed into the top floor of a Toyko complex where attendees come face to face, literally, with the big green monster!
Photos of the event have been released, but nothing from the “top floor,” where Godzilla makes quite an appearance.
Thanks to Bloody Disgusting reader Joe K. we have a link to leaked footage of the “encounter,” which gave me serious goosebumps. Seriously, watch this as soon as you can before Warners pulls the plug off YouTube.

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

This past Friday in Hall H Metallica debuted the trailer for Metallica Through the Never, which I’m sure you’ve all seen by now (I’ve included it below just in case). What you probably didn’t see from the panel was an extended clip from the film, created as exclusive content for the IMAX screens. It will run in all theaters before every showing of Elysium and Riddick. This movie, from director Nimród Antal (Predators, Kontroll), is definitely unlike any other concert film ever made.
It’s this clip that really explained (by way of example) how the overall film will work. It featured star Dane DeHaan in the middle of an apocalyptic war set in a downtown urban metropolis. Warriors on foot, and on horseback, clashed as DeHaan tried to avoid the chaos. Eventually it became apparent that one side of the combatants were functioning on the behalf of some kind of police state. DeHaan, tired of cowering, throws something at one of the horse-mounted assailants – who instantly gives chase.
All of this is interpolated with footage of Metallica performing, and the way it works is fairly seamless. While they cut away from the band for the story bits with DeHaan, it never feels like you’re “missing” anything. They’ve picked the best bits of performance footage and have edited the entire thing with a very musical, rhythmic flow. The film will be released by Picturehouse in North America on September 27, 2013, exclusively in over 300 IMAX 3-D theaters, and will expand into additional theaters on October 4, 2013.

Here’s an insanely vicious new trailer for NBC’s upcoming “Dracula”, featuring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the titular character. Evan Dickson was really impressed with what he saw at the San Diego Comic-Con.
The series, which bypassed the traditional pilot stage, takes place in the 1890s and finds Dracula (“The Tudors’” Jonathan Rhys Meyers) living a double life in London as an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian society. But his true plan — to exact revenge on those who burdened him centuries ago — is derailed when he falls in love with Mina (“Arrow”‘s Jessica DeGouw), who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. Van Helsing (Thomas Kretschmann) is a brilliant professor obsessed with revenge and power. He may be a greater threat to the public than the titular count. Katie McGrath and Nonso Anozie also star.
“Dracula,” a co-production from British Sky Broadcasting, Carnival Films & Television, Flame Ventures and NBCUniversal, hails from Tony Krantz (“24,” “Sports Night”) and former HBO Films president Colin Callender and writer-creator Cole Haddon (who will co-exec produce).
NBC plans to air Dracula in the fall of 2013. READ MORE
Even though Gareth Evans’ The Raid is about a trillion times better than Lionsgate and Pete Travis’ Dredd, I still really enjoyed their “Judge Dredd” adaptation that starred Karl Urban as a police officer with the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner.
Urban took to last week’s San Diego Comic-Con to promote his new Fox series “Almost Human,” where he spoke on the possibilities of a sequel to the brutal, R-rated actioner. The actor explained that he and Dredd 3D writer-producer Alex Garland have met about a potential sequel, which may be possible due to heavy home video sales.
“It’s certainly my hope that we get to make more,” he tells Airlock Alpha. “Clearly it has found an audience. The home video sales for Dredd 3D just went through the roof. I think it sold 650,000 units in the first week.”
Budgeted at nearly $50M, the comic adaptation only made $36M worldwide, which is a pretty hefty loss when you consider the marketing costs need to be recouped, as well. I don’t see anymore Dredd films in the foreseeable future. READ MORE
From Comic-Con comes the news that CBS’ “Under the Dome,” the miniseries based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, will be hitting home video on November 5, DVD Active reports.
The Blu-ray and DVD collections from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution arrive just in time for the holiday season and include all 13 episodes and never-before-seen special features. Amazon will also offer a deluxe Blu-ray version in dome-shaped packaging, with special features exclusive to the release.
“Under the Dome centers on a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers about the dome, where it came from and if and when it will go away.”
The miniseries stars Dean Norris, Rachelle Lefevre, Aisha Hinds, Mike Vogel, Natalie Martinez, Britt Robertson and Alexander Koch.

Today is catch up day as we bring you even more news that broke out of the San Diego Comic-Con, which has concluded for another year.
Below we have all three character banners for Edge of Tomorrow, the newest one featuring Tom Cruise, who actually showed up at the Con to sign posters!
In theaters January 6, 2014 from Warner Bros,. Pictures and director Doug Liman, “The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy” READ MORE
Coming straight from the X-Men panel today at SDCC, there’s a new series launching in November, to be be titled “Amazing X-Men”. The series will be written by Thor veteran Jason Aaron with art from Ed McGuinness. “Amazing X-Men” will feature the a team of Wolverine, Storm, Firestar, Iceman, Beast, Northstar, and of course, Nightcrawler. It’s been too long since I’ve seen my favorite teleporting mutant. READ MORE

IDW has plans to release “Rogue Trooper” reprints as well as a brand new series in the coming year. These blue-skinned cybernetic soldiers were all slaughtered except for one who now seeks revenge on his makers. During the Vertigo Comics panel, they ran the following video of Neil Gaiman and artist J.H. Williams III discussing their upcoming work together on “Sandman Overture”, which is set to hit shops in October. This is easily the most anticipated comic of the year (for me at least), and Neil Gaiman really, really wants you to like it. READ MORE
Universal Pictures’ The World’s End made quite a splash at Comic-Con this year. Yesterday morning I attended a breakfast event with Simon Pegg (Edgar Wright and Nick Frost were also in attendance – but that’s for another article). I was lucky enough that my table only had two other journos at it, so we all got more than enough chances to ask questions that actually interested us. Aside from Pegg’s thoughtful musings on The World’s End, I also got an incredibly candid response from him when we discussed the zombie genre in general.
In theaters August 23, “20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.” The new film from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright’s also stars Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan.

Marvel Studios and Joss Whedon surprised fans in Hall H at SDCC last night by unveiling their plans for the much anticipated Avengers film sequel. The official title of the film will be “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” meaning the villain will of course be Ultron. This is probably something we should have picked up on given the recent marvel event by Brian Bendis, “Age of Ultron”. From here on out, it seems like every major Marvel comic book event will inevitably be a movie tie-in of some sort. Check the logo below. READ MORE
“Every zombie’s a snowflake.” I’m glad someone finally said it.
Looking at this new ‘making of’ video, which made its debut at Comic-Con the other day, Dead Rising 3 looks like its gotten rid of the weird tonal shifts that plagued the first two games. For the most part, Dead Rising and its sequel were wacky, outlandish games with over-the-top gore and brief sparks of humor. This made the bits where the games got serious all the more uncomfortable. I liked having a sick little girl to take care of in the second game, but when daddy comes back armed with a chainsaw paddle and wearing a thong — I can’t take that “serious” moment seriously.
In Dead Rising 3, Capcom has finally decided on a tone for the games, and that’s gritty. The crazy weapon combinations are back, as are the psychopaths, time limit, and hordes of undead. You’ll still even be able to wear bizarre costumes, if you’re into that. Only now, it’s a gritty banana hammock. Enjoy a new featurette, where the devs talk about all these things — and more — after the jump.
Is there anything cooler than the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive that NECA dropped on attendees this past week? No, and there probably never will be. The glow-in-the-dark Jason Voorhees, from the classic 1989 NES Friday the 13th video game, is by far the most insanely badass figure ever created.
But NECA isn’t done. No, no, no…there’s more on the way.
While I dream of maybe seeing a version of the NES Jaws on my shelf, NECA could go back to 1989 (the same year the F13 game came out) and deliver a Freddy Krueger from the A Nightmare on Elm Street NES video game.
NECA revealed their aspirations in a tweet to a fan, joking that they would need to see how Freddy looked “all orange.” But, it was clear this is something planned down the road, although not definitive. READ MORE
The biggest roar out of the San Diego Comic-Con was Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla panel, where star Bryan Cranston told the audience he calls his penis, well, you get it, and the first ever footage was shown. The hype hit such highs that it’s the clear winner of this year’s major convention…
With that said, some news went completely unnoticed – thankfully, Bloody Disgusting is watching everything like a hawk.
NECA revealed that, not only to they have Pacific Rim toys on shelves, but Legendary and Warners has granted them a license to create new Godzilla toys next summer!
The footage, as described at the above link, explains that there is another monster that battle the giant lizard. In theaters May 16, 2014, it looks like NECA could be delivering quite the assortment. More as it comes in, probably around next February’s Toy Fair in New York. READ MORE
On Friday night, before the Metallica concert at Spreckles theater, I swung by the “Con Of Darkness” party to say hi to some friends. I wound up conducting an on-the-fly interview with co-directors Dennis Widmyer ann Kevin Kolsch, along with star Alex Essoe about their film Starry Eyes, coming soon from MPI’s Dark Sky Films.
“Starring ingénue Alex Essoe, the horror story is being described as a contemporary take on movies such as Rosemary’s Baby. The cast is rounded out by Amanda Fuller (Cheap Thrills, Last Man Standing – ABC Television), Fabianne Therese (The Aggression Scale, John Dies At The End), Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills, Compliance, The Innkeepers), Shane Coffey (Pretty Little Liars – ABC Television), Marc Senter (Brawler, Red White & Blue), Nick Simmons and Noah Segan (Looper, Deadgirl).”

HBO took to the San Diego Comic-Con to promote the already airing sixth season of “True Blood”.
Below we’ve added the brand new convention version of the “Weeks Ahead Trailer”. Take a bite inside!
Season 6 picks up immediately after last year’s bloody finale, which found Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) attempting to escape a very scary–and very naked–Bill (Stephen Moyer, who also directed the premiere episode). Joining the “True Blood” regulars this year are guest stars Rutger Hauer, Arliss Howard, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rob Kazinsky, Karolina Wydra, Luke Grimes, and Amelia Rose Blaire. READ MORE
I loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and am beyond excited for Matt Reeves’ sequel to the prequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which stars Andy Serkis, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Judy Greer, and Jocko Sims.
After a successful Comic-Con panel and presentation, Twentieth Century Fox provided Bloody Disgusting with the first ever still from the film, which prepares us for WAR.
In theaters July 18, 2014, “A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.”
