Breaking: ‘Friday the 13th’ TV Series Announced!

1-Friday the 13th
Crystal Lake is finally reopening on the small-screen.

While Platinum Dunes works out their remake for 2015, Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment have set a deal to produce a new hourlong dramatic series based upon the characters and settings of Friday The 13th, Deadline reports.

Sean S. Cunningham, who helmed the 1980 original, will be executive producer along with EFO Films principals Randall Emmett & George Furla, Dan Farrands, Mark Canton of Atmosphere Entertainment MM, Steve B. Harris of Diversion3 Entertainment, and Ted Fox of Fox Entertainment. Also producing is Horror Inc. president Robert Barsamian, who produced the features. The series was conceived by Daniel Farrands & Geoff Garrett.

Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar) have been set to script “a storyline that re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods.

The original was set at a summer camp, closed because of the drowning of an unattended child. Promiscuous counselors tried to re-open the place, but they began dying. Jason actually took root as the indestructible villain in the second film, with his signature hockey goalie mask debuting in the third. “The series is contemporary, focusing on the eclectic characters of Crystal Lake who are forced to confront the return of the killer, as new secrets about his wacky family are revealed.

Roy Knyrim (Gods and Monsters) of SOTA FX will coordinate the special make-up effects for the series.

Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide,” explained Cunningham. Said Barsamian: “Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we’re confident will not only excite existing fans of Friday The 13th but also attract new audiences to the situations and characters that inhabit the small town of Crystal Lake.

Happy about the announcement – hopefully good comes from it.

  • wehoaks

This and the scream series have me excited. But man, this site is just so lazy anymore. Not sure if Brad just cut and paste the press release or the article from Deadline, but the fact that a site devoted solely to horror left a glaring error about the franchise in the article without proofing is ridiculous. No respect for the genre or the people that make this site successful. This blog sucks.

  • Horror Guy

Who’s ready for Jason in Wild, Wild West!? “What’s that dang on thing he got on his face? Better yet, what’s that dang on thing in his hand!?”

    • Rick Bastardly

Well it end with Jason fighting a giant mechanical spider?

  • Steven McDade

No. This is NOT a good idea. If you want to do this, go to comic books. Better venue for the idea.

    • Lemonade

      Gross. Who reads comic books?

  • Daniel Sadler

    Hmmmmm

  • wehoaks

Also one should only use the headline “breaking” when you are actually breaking the news. Deadline beat you to it.

  • crizero

First Scream now Friday the 13th, what’s next in line Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Chucky ?

    • Noct

There was already a Friday the 13th TV series, as well as Nightmare on Elm Street.

      • Lemonade

Both having little to do with their iconic characters.

        • Noct

Well… You’re right about Friday; that had nothing to do with Jason/Crystal Lake at all (I did still love it though), but The Nightmare series was not only hosted by Freddy, the pilot episode (directed by Tobe Hooper!) showed his trial/acquittal. So that at the time seemed pretty cool.

          • Lemonade

They both had barely anything to do with their characters, dude.

  • Lemonade

“Jason actually took root as the indestructible villain in the second film, with his signature hockey goalie mask.”

    Second film eh Brad?

    • wehoaks

Exactly. This site is so lazy anymore. Cut, paste, no proof, post. Hell, they didn’t even credit the source this time around.

    • Matt

They didn’t exactly say 2nd film, they are saying his roots start as an indestructible villain, who’s signature thing is his hockey mask. When you think Jason, you think with a Hockey mask, so they are talking about his roots in the 2nd, but then of Jason as a whole with a sig Hockey mask, and Jason as a whole has a Hockey mask.

      • wehoaks

The article said he got his trademark mask in the second film (before Brad finally decided to read it and credit Deadline). Get off Brad’s nuts.

  • http://Voorhees83 Voorhees83

Why do people keep calling the working film a remake? Nobody knows what the film is gonna be yet and I highly doubt it will be a remake.

On another note, I’m excited about this series.

  • Nick Kaehler

“a storyline that re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods.” – So it’ll be a Sleepy Hollow knock off. I was somewhat excited about this news until I read that quote.

  • Ken Tronnes

Yup, he got the mask in the 3rd film guys. But who’s counting, right?

    • Jerome Radosh

I was going to post the correct film myself. Thanks for putting it out there.

      • Ken Tronnes

No problem Jerome. Some had to set it straight.

    • Rev’rend J. Redhood

“Jason actually took root as the indestructible villain in the second
film, with his signature hockey goalie mask debuting in the third.”
      ….they uh… had it right….

      • wehoaks

They uh had it wrong at first because they don’t proof the articles they cut and paste from other sources. They only uh got it right after the dipshit was called out.

        • Rev’rend J. Redhood

          you, uh… are, uh… a, uh…. dipshit, uh…. with poor, uh…. mockery… uhhhhhhhhhh….skills.. But, don’t worry, I still ADORE you easily worked up ‘n’ angry internetters. ;-)

      • http://www.facebook.com/jerel.johnson1 lib1

He also ran in 2, but “stalked” in 3. Friday the 13th 3 is where Jason’s signature look and traits began.

    • Billy Christoferson

      everyone thats who

  • Joey Nobody

i love the idea ov the Friday the 13th Legacy has finnaly desided to do a series ,my only consern would be ;not staying true, like so many remakes have flopped, but all in all i cant wait!!!

  • Joey Nobody

one more thing,im glad u guys got Sota Fx doing the FX,

  • Jerome Radosh

This could be cool but the time period thing worries me.

  • johnny riptide

Okay this sounds exactly like Bates Motel.. which could be great! I’d love a back story on Pamela and Jason.. what their early looked like before the drowning.. their association with the Christies, etc. The town of Crystal Lake will no doubt be a Twin Peaks-inspired assortment of kooks. Can’t wait actually!!

    • parsyeb

Sounds like poison to my taste. I’d see it if it were a single 90 min movie though…

  • Wes Nichols

    What network?

  • zydrateaddict13

Its working for the bates family. I think (if done correctly) this could too work. But I doubt it will.

  • Jellis

He gets his hockey mask in the third film. He uses an old sack in the second one.

Personally, it feels like Hollywood is and has been getting lazy. I don’t want to see a contemporary version of FtT. I don’t want overdeveloped characters, commercials, and having to wait and wonder if anyone will die. The joy of the original movies was the body count, and the fact you knew almost everyone would be slaughtered as they once again “killed” Jason. If I want to watch tv shows, I’ll stick to American Horror Story and Vikings.

    • wehoaks

You call mystery, suspense, and character development lazy? I bet you say “I” “me” and “mine” a lot in your daily life. Moron.

      • Jellis

Actually, I was speaking to the trend of Hollywood recycling great ideas from the past and bleeding them for every dollar their worth….and I consider THAT lazy. As far as overdeveloped characters and drawn out story lines…I personally don’t find that suspenseful.

The fact you resort to calling people morons because you don’t agree with their opinion is sad, and I’m thankful I don’t have to deal with you on a daily basis.

        • wehoaks

I called you a moron because you are a moron. Enjoy your 2 second attention span.

          • Jellis

Isn’t there a bridge somewhere you should be collecting tolls at?

    • DeadInHell

I don’t think you get the original film. It wasn’t until later that the series (and slasher films in general) became all about the body count. The early slashers, the good ones anyway, actually bothered to implement some mystery, suspense, atmosphere, likable characters, and so on. Halloween and, to a lesser extent, Friday the 13th are examples of this.

      • Jellis

I respect your opinion, but with 10 deaths in the first one, 9 in the second, and 12 in the third the body count was high even from the start. But I digress, yes the classics, which I saw most of in the theaters, had a certain level of suspense usually signaled by the theme music. It works for movies, but I don’t see it translating to a series. The concept of modernizing it also takes away from the old school suspense of not having computers or cell phones to reach out for help after Jason cuts the power and phone lines.

I wish Hollywood would back away from the classics and come up with new slasher icons. For example, Bloody Face from American Horror Story was a fun psychotic new slasher.

  • John Vugrin

“…with his signature hockey goalie mask debuting in the third.” READ the article…idiots.

    • Lemonade

It wasn’t like that originally, tool.

In fact, switching out “second” for “third” is the only thing in this article Mr. D could claim as his own.

      • wehoaks

Yeah john, several people read it incorrectly and you are right to suck brads dick because he is never wrong. Ya tool.

  • Andy Cauble

He got his hockey mask in Part 3 by the way. And I have a ton of trepidations about this idea.

  • Jake W.

    Mega bomb.

  • Skull-And-Crossbones

i’m actually pretty hopeful about this since sean cunningham is involved. i hope they bring jason’s dad into the picture.

  • Gregory Peck

cool if done right…I will watch

  • djblack1313

if they can make this like HARPER’S ISLAND (i guess without the mystery, since we’ll know it’s Jason killing everyone! LOL) it could be good. if it’s anything like the terrible F13 tv show from the late 1980′s then no.

  • Taboo

Man this could be really bad, but let’s all hope for the best lol

  • DeadInHell

I would probably be less interested in this if it didn’t seem like they were going to royally botch the new film. Maybe this series will give us the properly filmed (i.e. non-found-footage) F13 that we deserve.

  • Matt

TV series get so much more content, that they can focus on small things. I would like a bates hotel type thing, meets George Romero style tales from the darkside. So make it in same time line, but have a bunch of different stories, and not play out 1 long story. 1 full season aka 12 hours of 1 person surviving doesn’t sound cool.

Jason killing every episode, cool 80′s style coolness, and lots of boobs, blood and blades.I wish this was a FearNet or HBO thing, then Rated R all day, not for kids!

  • Scott Peele

    Excited!!!!!!!!!!

  • JRod365

The description for the series sounds like it’s going to be a sitcom. Any word other than “wacky” to describe his family would have been a more fitting. Is there any word on what network it’ll be on either?

  • J. Philip vanHeijkoop

wow another series based on a classic movie. Didn’t see that coming

  • John Dunn

I’d like to why Jason, who couldn’t swim, was in the middle of the lake with no raft or floatation device? We know he drowned because 2 counselor a were inside going at it but why was he even swimming in the first place if he couldn’t?

    • NixEclips

He was mentally handicapped, I guess.

  • anthonyd1

What network will this be on? I hope it is a Netflix original or showtime or HBO If its on regular cable it better be AMC or FX. They get away with a lot of stuff and there is no way they can have a Friday The 13th series without blood and sex

  • SXiPPY

Is Kane Hodder going to be playing Jason? That’s all I care about, because if not, I’m content retiring this franchise with “Goes To Hell”.

    • Hobgoblin238

Only a moron even puts the ninth one as part of cannon. It is an abomination to me. I own them all on DVD….EXCEPT that one. Pure shit.

  • Zahk Scott

I don’t want to get prematurely excited but I’m prematurely excited.

  • Adam Clifton

If done right and if it doesn’t get cancelled after one season, it’d be great. If they get Kane Hodder to play this Jason it’d be even better. At this rate, it’d be the only way he could come back to the series as Jason. And if this works, maybe we can get a new Freddy tv series as well?

  • cosas derasputin

I wonder when will happen a final chapter the last final part 11 i dont like the remakes sucks!

  • McGygas

Maybe can work like a police triller, and a lot of back history of the voorhees, that will be interesting

  • ~Adam~

I would’ve been excited if this was a reboot/relaunching of the old Friday the 13th: The Series from the late 80′s with the cursed antiques but updated for a modern era with all the new technology that exists coming into play to help the characters hunt down the objects, but since this is just going to be based around the one dimensional character of Jason, I really see this as a dud in the making. Jason is only good for bite-sized experiences like a hour and half movie every so many years sort of way. A weekly series of 10-15 (or more who knows?) episodes seems like it will get old and played out real quick. They should be playing off of Jason’s novelty at this point in the franchise’s history. Not opening the flood gates.

  • c-s-a78

if its going to be like bates motel, then expect a lot of the 1st series as a young Jason with mommy and daddy!as long as there making Jason stuff,I’m happy!

  • Ruben

    NO NO & NO

  • Sarigar

I’m intrigued by the weirdness of this idea. At first I thought it was a reboot of the “let’s go find haunted shit and put it all in one place” show from the 90′s, so that’s a relief. Despite how easily this could go wrong, it could also turn out to be weirdly engaging. I’m in: show me what ya got!

  • Waveboy

So it’s not set in the early 80′s? No thanks. Contemporary/modern doesn’t work for Camp crystal lake slasher.

  • ThunderDragoon

I don’t know how I feel about this. It could be cool, I guess. It depends on how they do it.

  • Rick Bastardly

Sounds like Twin Peaks but with a masked killer.

  • wolffearpain6336

First off I am not excited about the movie. The fact they hired a director who does the whole POV thing and shaky camera has me very worried. I will watch it with an open mind as always and can understand that they might be trying to shake up the formula but Jason works perfect when they have a great setting and maybe they should focus on putting in more likeable characters and not cliches. As far as this tv series goes, I do not know what to expect but I believe this will be a big hit or long miss. I have never been so unsure of Friday The 13ths future.

  • Jawsphobia

So it has nothing to do with the curio-shop set Friday the 13th series from the eighties. Okay, but is there really much to mine in Jason Vorhees? And how much gore can you show on TV?

  • diapers

My reaction to this news depends heavily on the intended network. Assuming it will be on cable and thusly have free reign on blood and gore effects, then yeah, I’ll give it a shot. If it will be dumbed down PG-13 level drivel, then count me out.

  • Francesco Falciani

    well…it seems cunningham 1 – platinum 0!!!

  • Callum Joplin

Oh this is cool, bates motel, hannibal, theyre all starting now, i cant say im upset.

  • http://www.youtube.com/seekingblue Connor Kwilos

Smells like a Bates Motel ripoff. By the way, you should watch that show ; it’s fucking fantastic.

  • Francesco Falciani

    go here on twitter
    @clecampdirector
if u want to be updated about the tv series… it’s the sean cunningham crystallake entertainment

  • Smiggles

This could be a good show if the creative team put creativity into the project :)

  • Adam Paquette

I hate Sean, he’s a greedy bastard. The only reason he even did Friday the 13th was to make money and he literally did it after Halloween came out so he could rip it off. He doesn’t care about the series at all. All he cares about are dollar signs. Let’s not forget he was the EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of Jason Goes To Hell and Jason X……….. that should tell you how much he cares about the series right there. He actually looked at the script for those movies and said “Yeah! Let’s do it!” All he cares about is money, and he admits it in pretty much all his interviews. You never really feel any passion when he’s talking.

  • Adam Paquette

I love how he went and edited his original post, pretending like he didn’t screw up. Come on, everyone knows it was Pamela in the first one, sack head Jason in the second, and then the hockey mask in the third one.
