You’ll Need to be Clever to ‘Survive the Nights’
Another combatant is preparing to enter the zombie survival game arena, and despite my general disinterest in this genre — and more specifically, the type of people games like DayZ and Rust tend to attract — I can’t help but be intrigued by what Survive the Nights has to offer. It looks to be more about surviving against its undead denizens, rather than other players. As the title would suggest, the world gets more dangerous when the sun goes down.
Thankfully, you’re resourceful, or at least you’ll need to be in order to survive the nights.
You can scavenge for supplies, including parts for traps that can be laid to ambush unsuspecting passersby. The extra level of strategy that’s been added to each encounter is what has me most interested in what largely looks like another game that’s trying to take a bite out of the tasty pie DayZ has been enjoying for some time now. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, competition is healthy, and with so many similarly themed games on the way (H1Z1, Miscreated) a simple copy/paste won’t do.
The debut trailer for Survive the Nights introduces a few neat ideas, though I do hope there’s even more to it that the developer either isn’t ready to show off yet or wants to save for later.
For more on Survive the Nights, feel free to follow it on Steam Greenlight.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.
We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
