Cary Fukunaga Explains Departure From ‘It’

Stephen King

Perhaps one of the most disappointing blows that us horror fans suffered this year was the announcement that director Cary Fukunaga was no longer attached to New Line’s remake of the Stephen King classic It. At the time, not too much was released on why Fukunaga left the project, but that’s not changed thanks to an interview with EW.

Fukunaga explained:
It’s never easy. Chase [Palmer] and I had been working on that script for probably three years. There was a lot of our childhood and our experience in it.

Ultimately, we and New Line have to agree on the kind of movie we want to make, and we just wanted to make different movies. It’s like a relationship: you can try to make the other person who you want them to be, but it’s impossible really to change. You just have to work.

The project is still a priority over at New Line as it’s being reported that Andy Muschietti, director of Mama, will be taking over the project and will have the script tailored to suit his vision. Meanwhile, Will Poulter was given the role of the iconic clown “Pennywise”, who was originally played by Tim Curry.
