Hard "R" Rating For 'Alien: Covenant,' Says Ridley Scott! - Bloody Disgusting!

Hard “R” Rating For ‘Alien: Covenant,’ Says Ridley Scott!

ALIEN 1979 via FOX

Ridley Scott has dropped all the bullshit and is embracing the animalistic nature of his Alien franchise.

Even though Prometheus, the prequel to his 1979 horror classic Alien, was targeting towards a more mainstream audience, it still ending up receiving an R-rating by the MPAA.

I think that maybe the fact he couldn’t pull off a PG-13, coupled with the dropping of Prometheus from the title, has lit that horror fire under his ass.

No longer will the Prometheus sequel be separate from Alien. Currently titled Alien: Covenant, Scott is returning to his roots in a big way with the sequel/prequel, and has plans on upping his own ante.

Screen Slam posted a full backstage video interview with Scott at the Golden Globes, where his The Martian won “Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.”

One of the reporters pointed out that fans of the horror genre are still looking for films like Alien to which Scott responded, “That’s why I’m doing it. I’m going to do pretty hard ‘R.’ Pretty tough.”

But the shocker is the reveal that he is planning something “much worse” than the famous chest-burst scene. He almost topped it with the c-section sequence in Prometheus. What could he have up his sleeve this time?!

Late last year Scott also excited us all when he said, “We’ll have them all: egg, face-hugger, chest-burster, then the big boy.” He also explained that the film will reveal a destroyed Engineer planet, and also shared plans for an expanded universe that will eventually bridge directly into his 1979 Alien.

Katherine Waterston recently landed the lead role. She will reunite with her Jobs co-star Michael Fassbender, while Scott has previously confirmed that Noomi Rapace will also return.

Shooting begins pretty soon in Australia with FOX setting it for release on October 6, 2017.

Time will tell. It’s kind of funny the worst Alien film (Resurrection, which I still enjoyed) was also the hardest.

    • Glad to hear there are others that enjoy Resurrection. There are some great thematic ideas in that one and creative gore effects.

      • Nathan Bradley

I agree. I like Resurrection more than many others do.

      • Resurrection was awesome – flawed yes but a very much alien movie with interesting aspects. And that water chase sequence!

        • Dan S.

That was the only good scene in the entire movie (water chase).

      • Charles Lupula

I loved Resurrection. Up until the AVP nonsense, the worst film was the theatrical cut of 3.

  • RidleyScott

Ugh, Ridley. Please, enough. I don’t want a gory or shocking movie, I just want a good, straight up sci-fi movie.

And I know somebody who works at Scott Free, the budget for this thing is $150 million. A lot of people won’t want to watch something super gory or violent. Prometheus had the perfect amount of viscera. In fact, had they taken out most of the blood in the C-section scene, they would’ve been awarded a PG-13.

Ridley Scott, John Logan, Michael Green, Dariusz Wolski, Janty Yates. So many talented, Oscar-winning/nominated/worthy people attached to this thing. Don’t go overboard, Ridley. We want a good story.

I remember the last time someone in this franchise wanted to make a “hard R” movie. ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM HAPPENED.

    • Ravinus

Says you. Alien is a sci-fi/horror franchise. PG-13 Alien movies are for pussies. Bring it on Scott.

      • jaredyjaredy .

Have you even SEEN the original Alien, bro? It’s a HORROR.

        • Ravinus

Yes, bro. Probably around the time your monkey grandfather was jerking your dad’s siblings out of his nutsack.

      • RidleyScott

What? Are you a crazy individual? Thank goodness I have cameras around my house.

    • MarsupialRebellion

Um dude they’re all hard R’s except for A vs P and Prometheus… bring on whatever you want Ridley. Glad to see you’re back with another Alien.

      • RidleyScott

Alien and Aliens are not hard Rs, especially Aliens, which has no human blood with the exception of two scenes(chest-bursting, Ferro’s death).

    • 0ldboy26

you clearly are not that big a fan if you think the series is not Horror with sci-fi thrown in. Hard R is the only way to go for this series.

      • RidleyScott

There’s a difference between “R” and “hard R”. Ok? Ok.

    • Charles Lupula

Well, I guess they’ll just change the entire franchise because of what YOU don’t want to see.

      • RidleyScott

Are you part-psychopath or something? Get away from me.

        • Charles Lupula

Sorry, doesn’t work that way, buddy boy. You posted on a public forum, saying something utterly ridiculous. We have the right to respond. You don’t want to be called out for how weak your post sounds, delete it and don’t post in public. Otherwise, deal with how people react to what you wrote.

          • RidleyScott

            And I

Have the right to respond to YOUUUUUUUUUUR response!!!

            It’s DEFRIGHTFUL!!!

          • Charles Lupula

Yeah, you do. I’m not the one whining like a schoolgirl with a bruised knee that someone is a psychopath because they disagree with my opinion.

          • RidleyScott

Yikes, psychopath. Get away from me.

            And it’s a bruised elbow.

          • Charles Lupula

            Nobody’s going anywhere.

          • RidleyScott

            Ohhhh ho ho! Sassy

    • Foxenstein Must Be Destroyed

      i like avp: requiem.

  • REC03

nope still would rather have Alien 5. byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

    • Ray Felch

      me to this sucks

  • wehoaks

I wish this site posted news.

  • Problem with RS is that he is kinda full of shit. He mentioned that PRometheus will be an Alien Prequel…then not, then kinda, then we will see! After the spectacular failure of Prometheus, I really hope he steps up his game!

    • Dan S.

The movie made more than 400M. Hardly a “spectacular failure” as you say.

      • box office means nothing to me mate. It failed spectacularly due to the vast amounts of talent involved in the film. Delivered nothing new with a messy script and gigantic plotholes. But each to their own I guess.

        • James

It was a huge failure. Money doesn’t mean much. Some of the worst movies make tons of money and some of the best make very little. He had a chance to make a great prequel and he blew it. Then everyone got excited for Blomkamp’s alien sequel and now Ridley is back pedaling and trying to make an alien film again. Prometheus should have either been a true prequel or a completely separate story with no connection. It was basically at the mountains of madness and Ridley should have just embraced that and made a true adaptation.

          • “Money doesn’t mean much” Yes it does. Why do you think we’re getting so many sequels or lack of original ideas? Why almost every new film is rated PG-13? Making movies is a business foremost.

          • James

That’s not what I meant at all. I meant money doesn’t mean much as an indicator of the quality of a film.

          • Quality is subjective.

          • James

      • Nick Aites

Just means the trailers fooled enough people. Like they’re meant to.

  • Looking forward to it!

BTW, the term, thanks to Gearbox, is “Pre-Sequel!” 🙂

  • Halloween_Vic

I still wanna say FUCK U to Ridley Scott! A big fuck u! Just shut up and make the damm movie to a franchise he all of a sudden wanted to return too because of Star Wars . -_-

    • markbuehner

Prometheus came out 3 years ago and Covenant has been in production for two years.. What the fuck are you talking about?

      • Halloween_Vic

No he announced Covenant after BlomKamp announced what he was pitching to FOX on his alien sequel. Covenant just became what it is a couple months ago, the concept he has now wasn’t suppose to be the concept for the Prometheus sequel he planned 3 years ago!!!! So look up your shit first before u talk out your ass!

        • markbuehner

Giant eye roll. Ouch, that actually hurt.

  • I think Prometheus got an R rating for it being so fucking boring and stupid.

    • RidleyScott

You were the size of an 18 year old linebacker when you were in 5th grade, weren’t you?

      • Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

        • RidleyScott

No, no it is not! Bahahahaha you are RIGHT.

  • Foxenstein Must Be Destroyed

ridley scott was dressed as a pirate and eating fish-sticks at the time this interview was conducted.

  • Evan3

Shared universe eh? And there is also a Blade Runner reboot in the works eh? And man, Predator is pretty moribund these days, isn’t it? Could that be the shared universe he is referring to?

Rating is overrated. I want a compelling story and characters – both of which were largely missing in Prometheus.

Finally, it sure sounds like that sequel from the District 9 guy is dead as a doornail.

  • Gus Hodges

At this point I will go see anything not rated PG-13. PG-13 = the standard bearer of mediocrity.

  • aNYagenda

“He almost topped it with the c-section sequence in Prometheus.”

    Not even close.
That was one of the stupider scenes in a movie filled with stupidity.

  • Prometheus sucked so hard, I had to watch Alien again to convince myself that Ridley Scott had made it. He had some energy back in 1979, but today he’s run-down, washed up and in love with his own self-image as a badass director.
