A ‘Cloverfield’ Spinoff is Already Filmed…and Here’s the Trailer!

Updated with confirmation and a bootleg of the official teaser trailer!

Back in 2007 Paramount begun teasing an untitled horror film from J.J. Abrams that ended up being the found-footage Cloverfield, a lower budgeted genre film inspired by Godzilla.

It was a monster success, mostly because of the film’s incredible and memorable grass roots campaign.

There have been rumors for years of a sequel to the film that launched director Matt Reeves, writer Drew Goddard and actress Odette Annable-Yustman’s careers.

Monstrous news via Collider who is reporting that not only is a sequel/spinoff on the way, but it’s done, with a teaser trailer connected to Michael Bay’s 13 Hours.

A reader writes in to the site claiming the title is none other than 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Update: Paramount Pictures shared with the site this exclusive statement from J.J. Abrams himself confirming the news!

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

Abrams’ addition that it’s a “blood relative” seems to suggest that the movie isn’t a direct sequel to Cloverfield but instead takes place within the same universe. It should also be known this one is not found-footage.

It was originally announced that Dan Trachtenberg — who helmed the short film “Portal: No Escape” — would be directing a post-apocalyptic thriller called Valencia (also referred to as The Cellar) for Bad Robot and Paramount Insurge, produced by J.J. Abrams.

10 Cloverfield Lane stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr. and, per their reader has a “very creepy trailer that starts out fun but then gets really dark.”

Here’s more on the plot: Collider previously spoke with Winstead when she was promoting her indie Faults, and she told them the film revolves around a woman who wakes up in a cellar where she’s being kept by a stranger, played by Goodman. The actress previously elaborated a bit on the plot by saying the following:

“He tells me that basically the world is over outside because there’s been a nuclear fall-out. It does have similarity to Faults, in some ways, because you don’t know who’s telling the truth or who to believe. There’s a lot of, who’s manipulating who, and all of that. Tonally, it’s very different, but it has some of those same themes.”

It gets even better!

10 Cloverfield Lane is set to hit theaters on March 11th!

Cloverfield followed a group of friends who venture deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission during a rampaging monster attack.

It was most of the most anticipated genre films in years, and was shrouded in all sorts of mystery. Fans, to this very day, still theorize the origin of the monster (was it awakened deep in the sea by a crashing satellite?).

Who knew, another update!

Here’s the official teaser trailer that just appeared online. I love it. As a teaser, it sets everything up perfectly. It’s a three-act trailer with the audience introduced to a “family” in a bomb shelter, and led to believe the man (Goodman) is keeping them locked in. When the girl (Winstead) escapes, it soon becomes clear that he truly was protecting them. But from what? What’s the next phase of Cloverfield‘s monster? Is this even in the same universe or is this the beginning of a new Sci-fi anthology series? So many questions!

It’s so refreshing to be this excited about an upcoming movie again – and only have to wait two months!

    10 times the Action
    10 times the shaky cam

  • Nathan Bradley

If only studios would make habit of these quick releases, without rushing the film.

    • CrackTheSkye1990

They didn’t rush the film at all. In fact, filming began in October 2014 and finished in December 2014. It’s now January 2016 and it’s far from being rushed. It only feels rushed because they kept it under wraps for a long time.

      • Nathan Bradley

I never said it was rushed I was referring to any future film, if they can do what they have done with Cloverfield and keep it under wraps for a while longer instead of telling us three years in advance. Sometime the wait is agonising.

  • GrossGreg

Man I might be in the minority but I fucking loved Cloverfield.

    • Mr. Dry

Minority? I don’t know, but I’m with you dude, Cloverfield is fucking awesome!

    • Serpico Jones

      Minority? Cloverfield is great.

    • khail19

It had one of the best, and maybe the epitome of, viral marketing campaigns ever. People who followed those ARG’s needless to say are thrilled about this news.

    • James Allard

My only disappointment with Cloverfield was that I didn’t see it in the theater.

  • Mr. Dry

HOLY SHIT! If this is not true I will be heartbroken I truly love Cloverfield and a sequel? With Mary Elizabeth Winstead? FUCK YES, PLEASE!

    • Humberto Adan Herrera Cosio

Been confirmed by Abrams himself it’s a “blood relative” of Cloverfield. So a not a direct sequel. But a sequel nonetheless. I think

      • Mr. Dry

YESSS I KNOW! This was before all the updates, I’m crazy happy right now!

  • GrossGreg

That trailer is confusing as shit.

    • How so? A “doomsday prepper” is holed up with 2 others in a fallout shelter and one decides to escape. Seems fairly straightforward and obvious to me.

  • Freddy D Roberts

Glad they’re not going the found camera way.

  • Darren Peach

    Yes please.

  • Grimphantom

Hmmm by the looks of the trailer doesn’t show much been a monster movie, we didn’t even hear noises of a monster.

Anyway I’m not going all obsessed like what happen to the first movie. If you consider this as a sequel to it. Still I’m curious and surprise it will be released this year and in March.

A plus its nice having the great Mary Elizabeth Winstead and you gotta give her credit on doing horror movies where it does shows her love for horror

    • eli

She is vastly underrated & underused. Her turn in Smashed was flawless. We need more of her in film.

      • Grimphantom

I love her since the movie Sky High along with Grindhouse and Scott Pilgrim. And i also like her role in the prequel of The Thing.

        • eli

First saw her in FD3 & been a fan ever since. Talented, likable & gorgeous. I need to check out Sky High.

          • Grimphantom

It’s a Disney film but it’s not bad. Aside of Mary Elizabeth, there’s also Kurt Russell in this movie AND Bruce Campbell.

  • khail19

…was that the original version of the Tiffany song? And LOL! SOOO out of the blue!

    • jackschidt

yes. the song was NOT written by tiffany…she kinda butchered a classic by Tommy James and the Shondelles.

  • James B. Davis

  • G.C. Punk

In a week filled with horrible news… the is the best thing I could have hoped for. Cloverfield is simply amazing and this… this is just great. J.J. is one sneaky son of a gun!!!

  • Vicente Garcia

Cloverfield is the best monster movie this decade.
And this? Since my guess is that this takes place after the “Cloverfield” apocalypse (IE the parasites have run amok and killed everyone)…this looks awesome.

  • Miles Jones

keep in mind guys, this movies budget is 5 million. Cloverfield was 15 million. so youre going to see 3 times less than what cloverfield brought, and that’s really small. I doubt theyll even show anything until the very last few seconds. So if youre going into this movie expecting to see the big guy throughout, you better be prepared for the worst too

    • GrossGreg

      Why the IMAX release then?

      • Miles Jones

no clue but i doubt 5 million can pull as much cg work as clover off

        • James

Did you see the movie monsters? A lot can be done on a shoestring budget.

        • Jay

Remember, technology becomes cheaper and more widely available in the subsequent years following it’s introduction. So what was possible for 15 million may in fact be possible for 5 million. That being said it doesn’t look like their goal is to make the same movie twice!!!!!

    • It strikes me that this film isn’t going to be good for people expecting another version of the first film, and more for people that’re interested in the Cloverfield universe. It’s a brilliant idea imo, a completely different style of film set in the same world. I mean they could’ve just done what Paranormal Activity did and make endless shitty found footage sequels… thank god they didn’t do that :/

  • ThunderDragoon

    I am beyond excited!

  • I fucking love mary elizabeth winstead. That is all

    • Gadriel

Indeed, she is a Goddess among women.

  • Well this is strange. I remember commenting on the announcement of this movie in mid-2014 when it was called “The Cellar”, and again when some publicity stills were released and it changed it’s name to Valencia.

To think that it’s actually a Cloverfield spin-off is bizarre.

  • Brad Scott

This trailer is garbage when compared to the first Cloverfield trailer…

  • Whiskeyriver

Somebody should splice in a footage of Donald Trump at the podium after Mary Elizabeth Winstead covered her mouth and gasped.

    • Gadriel

I’d make Mary Elizabeth Winstead cover her mouth and gasp……..

  • Stephen

    Well, my interest is piqued.

  • Not sure if anyone remembers the crazy viral marketing for Cloverfield, and I’m probably reaching here – but I wonder if these numbers in the trailer are the start of another viral treasure hunt.

4813 is displayed at the start and we see the number ‘550’ conveniently facing the camera in 4 consecutive shots (the jigsaw puzzle). And then of course we have the 10 in the title. There’s every chance it’s nothing, and that they won’t do the viral marketing thing, but I remember how obscure the hints were in the first Cloverfield trailer and it makes me wonder.

    • And so it begins.

The web site for the movie’s original title contains a password protected link when you click the text, “reality is just an illusion”.

Trying different number and password combinations now, any ideas?

    • GrossGreg

There’s a giant number 7 embedded in the poster.

    • NixEclips

God, I remember those days well.

  • hellwitch 666

The lower budget factor has me scared! Is it REALLY 1/3 of the original’s?

    • It’s a spin-off. I’m not expecting an all out monster movie/city destruction.

    • Gadriel

A big budget isn’t necessary for a decent movie.
Hell, some of the most expensive films ever made turned out shite – and some of the greatest movies ever made cost very little in comparison.

  • CelticBull

Can’t fucking believe this is happening! Brilliant cast, too! I’m so in.

  • CLOVERFIELD was a groundbreaker. This will be great no matter what.

  • Mr. Screamer

  • I hope it eats John Goodman.

  • 🙂

  • pablitonizer

Hmmm I want this to like me so much, but I don’t see Cloverfield connection…I think it just a marketing campaign to sell a movie taking place in a basement for an hour and a half with a good cast but a been there-done that plot. It looks kindda boring actually….

    • It’s been confirmed 🙂

    • metalmoshinbert75

Yeah I have that gift too of watching a 30 second trailer and figuring out the whole movie. It’s like I’m psychic. Oh wait, I don’t have that gift AND NEITHER DO YOU!!!!

  • WindowsIsDead

I’m impressed. In a time where scripts leak before shooting, teasers are shown months, even a year before releasing and a lot of information about upcoming movies are soaked upon us through the internet, they could kept this hidden this long.
And you know what? I’m happy they did, because being surprised plays a huge part on the film entertainment AND I’M F* STOKED! Bring it on!

*Also, it shows that if they want, they can keep it a secret, studios should learn to keep their mouths closed for some time, like this.

    • So true! I don’t understand why it isn’t always like this. Reading “Cloverfield 2” this morning I nearly spat out my coffee from surprise

  • Jane

I’m just thrilled it’s not found footage

  • alliedcola

Uh… and in other news no one ever expected to hear…

Looks very interesting, I wonder how far they’ll take this, marketing-wise,

  • Dee

    Fuck Bad Robot! That’s all.

  • Yes yes so much YES. What a way to reveal a sequel, when it’s been that long that people stopped speculating there would ever be one.

If this is going to have any where near as much hype from marketing as the first I’ll be very happy. I was hooked waiting for Cloverfield to come out!

    • James

Right? I’m extremely intrigued now. I was not expecting this at all and the trailer was extremely well done

  • ChasingTheGhost

Holy shit… My prayers have been answered.

  • REC03

    the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt?

  • Halloween_Vic

I’ve always wanted a Cloverfield follow up I love me a good/creepy creature feature. Hopefully this does have monsters!!! And I like that this one is not found footage, can’t wait for this!

  • Brodequin

Great news, great trailer. And The GREAT John Goodman. So sweet…

  • poncespr

I don’t have a clue, just spitballing. But maybe John Goodman’s character is holding them against their will because he knows something is happening, or about to happen (the events on Cloverfield?) and they don’t believe him. You can hear him almost begging her not to open the door, claiming she will get them all killed.

    • metalmoshinbert75

Of course you have no clue YOU DIDN’T READ THE ARTICLE!

      • poncespr

I did read it you fucking prick. If you had not shit for brains you would see it has been updated twice since. Now crawl back under the rock you came from.

  • I’m sooo happy. What a fantastic late christmas present from JJ! I admit, the bulk of the trailer didn’t even remotely feel like it’d have anything to do with Cloverfield either way but that last scene did it for me. The synopsis on IMdb is Waking up from a car accident, a young woman finds herself in the basement of a man who says he’s saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable.

Anybody uncovered anything on an ARG attached yet?

  • sliceanddice

    well butter my biscuit.

  • benaerograffiti

5 million can get a lot done these days. Especially if the cast is micro, and the FX are compartmentalized, and the actors agree on backend. If it was shot for IMAX then that ain’t for nothin’. There is also a possibility that a lot of effects were shot in the first one then canned for a sister project. 8 years later and tah-daaahhh!! Abrams you sneaky fuck! See you there!

    • It’s up-scaled. I doubt it very much it was shot in native IMAX on that budget.

  • CrackTheSkye1990

Looks pretty good. I’m glad they did something completely different without rehashing the original one and they did a good job of keeping it under wraps.

Hopefully it’s worth the wait. It took 6 years for Oren Peli’s Area 51 to come out and that was very disappointing, mostly that it was boring and nothing really happened.

  • Scott Neil

Cloverfield was one of the worst films ever made.

    • Wayne Gleeson

  • SKILZS2000

I love the first one I just wish they picked up from where it left off without the found footage

  • Nathan Bradley

If you ask me it looks like they have just slapped the title onto another film. Anyone?

That’s what I’ve been reading and hearing lately, my understanding is they finished filming Valencia and afterwards did some reshoots to tie it in with Cloverfield. Then they slapped the title on it, sounds wierd.

      • Wayne Gleeson

Agreed, looks more like a psychological thriller that will be set entirely in that bunker, no clovie.

  • Nathan Bradley

It probably would have been cheaper for them to just make an actual sequel that was found footage than this.

  • Nicholas

Awesome, not found footage; I enjoyed cloverfield, despite that aspect.

  • Gavin

I have a soft spot for Cloverfield. Sure, it had its flaws (Dodgy pacing and stereotypical characters) but I loved what it was trying to do and achieve. I never thought it would get a sequel, but I am so happy it has! I have high hopes for this film, and hope it is well connected with the Cloverfield world. Besides, it has John Goodman, one of my favourite actors.

  • Wayne Gleeson

It looks more than likely that we won’t see the monster at all in this one.

  • Galbador

This reminds me so much to REC4 and that part was not really great. Don’t get me wrong, I like JJ and his movies, but… I don’t know. I really hope, that this will be a good movie, because I’m a big fan of Cloverfield. I really hope.
