General Mills Monster Cereals Get Political; 2016 Box Art Reveal!

Trump or Clinton? More importantly, Boo Berry or Franken Berry?!

Ever since October 1971, General Mills’ “monster cereals” have been a staple of each year’s Halloween season. The first two cereals in the line were Count Chocula and Franken Berry, with Boo Berry joining the fun a couple years later, and all three cereals (and their respective mascots) have impressively stuck around all these years. Of course, the same cannot be said for Yummy Mummy and Fruit Brute, which were both discontinued when they failed to capture hearts – they were brought back to life in 2013, for a short-but-sweet return to shelves.

At the end of this month, the big three monster cereals will officially usher in the start of 2016’s Halloween season, and we’ve just learned that General Mills is smartly tying this year’s release into election season. For the first time ever, Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry are competing to determine which monster mascot is America’s favorite, and it’s up to you, yes YOU, to place your vote and let your voice be heard. To make things super easy, you can do so from the comfort of your computer chair.

But first, a few words from each candidate – along with the 2016 art reveals!

I may be afraid of things that go bump in the night, but have no fear, spooky shadows and fearful frights won’t keep me from delivering the goblin’ good chocolate you crave,” promises Count Chocula, who is (at the time of writing this post) ahead in the polls. “So, fly to the polls and choc one up for the Count!

For years I have stood tall against Count’s countless accusations that his cereal is better than mine,” Franken Berry notes, tossing his nuts and bolts into the running. “Now I’m ready to take charge and show Count once and for all who’s the berry best. Make the electrifying choice and bank on Frank!”

While my opponents cry over spilled milk, I’m the only candidate who has stayed true blue to you!” pleads Boo Berry. “Unlike these two scaredy cats, I’ll be fearless in my pursuit to scare up even more frightful fun for you. Don’t be haunted with regret; vote Boo for a ghostly good breakfast!

Head over to the official Monsters Cereal Election website to meet the candidates, place your vote, and even print/digitally share campaign posters. Though you should vote for the fun of it, we must mention that $5,000 is being offered up to one lucky voter, along with additional daily prizes.

While you wait for Alien: Romulus, the folks over at Devilworks have cooked up their own slice of “mockbuster” fun with Alien Hunt, and we’re debuting the trailer here on BD this morning.

This brand-new sci-fi horror from director Aaron Mirtes (The Bigfoot Trap, Painted in Blood) is set for its US premiere on May 14, and you can find it on digital thanks to Devilworks.

You can exclusively watch the official trailer for Alien Hunt below, which looks to combine elements of Alien and Predator. This particular “mockbuster” has very little interest in hiding its inspirations, with the alien designs plucked straight out of H.R. Giger’s beautiful brain. Hey, if you’re going to pull from other movies, might as well take from the all-time greats!

In Alien Hunt, “On a hunting trip in the wilderness, a group of siblings discovers an abandoned military outpost on their land, but is it what it seems?

“Their trip takes a sinister turn when they find themselves facing off against a relentless army of extra-terrestrial beings. Suddenly, the hunters become the hunted.

“The formidable squad of alien soldiers will stop at nothing to wipe out the enemy and in an all-out, brutal battle for survival, it’s kill or be killed in Alien Hunt.”

Barron Boedecker (Escape Pod, The Bigfoot Trap), Brent Bentley (The Perfect In-Laws, Haunt Season), Deiondre Teagle (The Visitor, Painted in Blood, Death Ranch), Chelsey Fuller (The Bigfoot Trap, The Silent Natural), Jesse Santoyo (A Nashville Country Christmas, Potter’s Ground), and Adam Pietripaoli (The Bigfoot Trap, The OctoGames) star.
