Comic Series ‘Skull Island: The Birth of Kong’ Will Be a Prequel and Sequel to the Film

Already want to head back to Skull Island? You’re in luck!

As I raved in my review, I loved Kong: Skull Island so much that there’s a good chance I’ll be heading back to the theater to see it at least one more time before it’s gone. The 2014 version of Godzilla didn’t do much for me, but Skull Island has made me so very excited about Legendary’s so-called MonsterVerse. I want more, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to wait until 2019.

In the meantime, Legendary Comics just announced Skull Island: The Birth of Kong, a four-issue series that will be unleashed beginning April 5th. The saga is set to delve deeper into the mysteries of Skull Island and the mythic origins of the island’s king, the massive Kong.

Both a sequel and a prequel to the film, the series tells the story of a secret team of Monarch operatives returning to Skull Island to discover the truth behind Kong and the island he is born to protect. In doing so, they unlock an ancient history of monster conflict, witness the primal war between Kong and an otherworldly ecosystem of deadly new creatures, and finally reveal how this lonely god became the last of his kind.

With a dramatic new narrative that paves the way for what is to come, fans will discover new revelations that point to the future of the MonsterVerse.

You’ll find sneak peeks above and below.

If it’s both a prequel and sequel, four issues seems kind of short. Since the movie was set in the 70’s, and the V22-Osprey didn’t go into service until the late 2000’s, that is about a forty-something year span. I will keep an eye on it though, for sure.

In other words it follows the original Skull Island novel, featuring a return to the island, as well as an exploration of its history.

At first I thought it was a comic being turned into a film I just got so excited lol but this is pretty cool too.
