We’re Pretty Sure Ridley Scott Just Revealed the Next ‘Alien’ Prequel Title

Whenever Ridley Scott sits down for an interview, he almost always says something interesting. Just recently, he noted that he may be making Alien prequels until the day he dies, noting that a follow-up to both Prometheus and this year’s Alien: Covenant has already been written. And during a new interview this week, he may very well have just revealed the title of that film!

Speaking with Fandango, Scott talked so honestly and openly about the future of the prequel franchise that Alien: Covenant star Katherine Waterston literally had to tell him to stop talking. Of particular note, when Scott was asked about the next film in the series, he told the site:

There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien. It will go Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant…fairly integral where this colonization ship is on the way….

It would seem, based on these comments, that Alien: Awakening is the title of the already-penned film that Scott will be directing in the future. This is a title we previously had not heard, so it’s needless to say a big piece of news that was leaked by the man himself. What’s even more interesting is that Awakening will apparently take place between Prometheus and Covenant.

Covenant is set 10 years after Prometheus, so that adds up.

Scott later added:

If [Covenant] is successful, and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more.

Previously, we had heard that Covenant is the start of a new trilogy of prequels, but now it looks like Scott is saying it’s the first of FIVE films that will lead into the events of Alien.

He also noted that none of those films will take place *after* Alien.

In the meantime, Alien: Covenant arrives on May 19.

  • The timeline for this is gonna be so confusing for the general public. Good god. (Obviously it’s not difficult if you read stuff like this before, but for average joes, it’ll be a nightmare)

    • Boxcar Racer

      I agree.

Promethesus is a prequel to Alien, while Covenant is a sequel to Promethesus but still a prequel to Alien and now I guess Awakening will be a sequel to Prmothesus but a prequel to covenant. and then there is (still) Neil Blompkamps sequel to Alien 2 which would leave Alien 3 and Resurrection non-canon, so it’d be techincally Alien 3. And then…Oh no I’ve gone crossed eyed….

      • huntermc

That still makes more sense than the X-Men movies timeline(s).

        • J Jett

huntermc, i agree w/ Boxcar Racer but when i was reading his comment i immediately thought of the XMEN movies and how F’d up the timeline(s) are for that franchise! LOL.

    • wedellbudwhite

I doubt the general public will even care bout the timeline

  • Royal Rican Prince

If only he had commited to doing this during that long streak of horrendous films he’s made!

  • Francesco Falciani

    i still want alien 5

  • Nathan

I hope all this happens but things just never pan out how they should in Hollywood.

  • Full Effect Ed

Does Alien really need 5 goddamn prequels? lol

    • Saturn

We’ll know once they have been made.

  • Prince Of Darkness

    Eagerly awaiting ALIEN: Electric Boogaloo.

    • Wil McMullen

Holy shit, if they some how find some way to tie “Turbo” into their expansive backstory, i’d officially ne convinced Ridley has lost all of his goddamn mind. The executives at Fox would have lost their minds too, if they greenlight these once respected and feared Xenomorphs (or whatever-morph) into a film that finds them break dancing. Ugh! Please for the love of Aliens, hell no!

      • wedellbudwhite

See here’s the problem ” for the love of aliens” not alien. Bye the way the alien lost all respect and fear when aliens made them into cannon fodder

        • Wil McMullen

Ive made several comments during past articles that mirror ur thoughts . i totally agree, but my point is with all this talk of expanding this story, im hoping it doesnt get lost with adding sillyness to the ‘Alien’ mythos.

          • wedellbudwhite

I do sort of agree i defiantly don’t want or need an alien film every year.

    • Biscoito18

      It’s called Alien: Resurrection 😉

      • The Fucked Up

Don’t crack down any movie with Ron Perlman in it, you’ll disturb the order of the Universe

        • jacobia

          Well said, that person!

    • Young Kirks

It’s my dream to one day be the first commenter to make the Electric Boogaloo joke on an article about sequels.

  • LivingDeadMan

Blomkamp really isn’t being given a window of opportunity at all, is he?

    • James

No Ridley is definitely shutting him out

      • Flu-Like Symptoms

Agreed. When talk of bringing the Aliens cast back to right the wrongs that had been done to Cameron’s world there was a huge buzz and suddenly people couldn’t give two shits about the Prometheus universe. At that point I visualize Ridley kipping up like Shawn Michaels and grabbing his shit and running out the door for the studio.

I was initially all-in for a one-off lead-in to Alien, as Prometheus was originally intended to be. Loved the idea and followed the project to completion and was front row on opening day. Of course by then everything we saw that was supposed to lead up to Alien had been hacked up and supposedly meant something else, and now, if we’re gonna have 5 or 6 different prequels by the time it’s all done I’d honestly rather see Sigourney and the old crew back.

        • wedellbudwhite

If its anyone’s “world” its Ridleys not bloody Camerons. I don’t understand why anyone has faith in bloomkamp making a good alien film, do you even like his films? or do you just like that he’s an aliens fan ?

While not a huge fan of Prometheus it was never meant to be a direct prequel to alien. It was very clear from the start it wasn’t, it was stated many times before its release and tried to warn you when the didn’t even put alien in the title. you clearly went in with a preconceived idea of what it should be and didn’t like when it wasn’t that.

thank god that Camerons tied up with avatar movies. Alien 3 righted the wrongs of obnoxious newt and cardboard cutout Hicks and brought back the horror

          • The Fucked Up

            Right, 85 😉

          • wedellbudwhite

So you gonna point out what you disagree with my comment or you just gonna leave it at that.

          • The Fucked Up

It just seemed like the perfect excuse. “Right, 85” is the perfect answer to any rant, regardless of topic or wether the rant is justified. Nothing personal (or constructive I might add)

          • Halloween_Vic

Nah Cameron truly set up that “Alien” world and introducing more Xenos and the Queen Alien. He actually started the true hype. The first Alien film is good but Cameron’s “Aliens” is even better and truly set the tone for what the films are today. When you think of the Alien franchise you think of “Aliens.” And I believe BlomKamp would make an amazing Alien film. He has a passion for the franchise and to bring back Ripley?!? I’d take that over these non needed prequels any day especially from Ridley Scott.

          • wedellbudwhite

            Jesus Christ where to start

More aliens, a larger one and making them space ants didnt truly set up the Alien world it weakened it.

The tone it set is one of the major problems with aliens. took nearly all horror out and made it dumb action. it did though set up the expectations from moron fans that every alien film should follow its tone.

When i think of the alien franchise i most defiantly don’t think of aliens, but thanks for telling me what i think

Bloomkamp does not have a passion for the franchise, otherwise he wouldn’t be trying to retcon it after the second in the series. He does have a passion for aliens though, that seems about it like you

Yeah these prequels are not needed but another alien film with Ripley is!

you are everything that’s wrong with fans o this franchise

          • Halloween_Vic

And that’s your opinion we don’t have to agree. Telling me I’m what’s wrong with the Fans of the Alien franchise is bitter and irrelevant. From the look of it a lot of us so called “fans” were really excited about Blomkamps vision for Alien 5. So if you’re part of the 5% that is happy for Ridley to continue his shit prequels and not want to see a true sequel with the main protagonist end that story then that’s you I don’t give a shit I’m still gonna state my opinion cause it’s my opinion. But yea it’s safe to say Cameron’s “Aliens” is the best film in the series and the most popular and actually one of the best sequels in movie history that beats the original. And would you look at that it was film full of action.

          • wedellbudwhite

Of course its my opinion I’m posting in the comments section of a horror news website. Bitter yes irrelevant not at all we are discussing the franchise, of course its relevant. Bloomkamps ” vision” is bad fan fiction. I’m part of the 5% that’s gonna watch the film, give it a chance and not whine it doesn’t have Ripley in it. Ripley’s story has ended, you just want to reboot after aliens, there’s no unfinished plot or anything to conclude. falling back on its my opinion doesn’t stop it from being a shit opinion, and all anyone is doing on this site is stating they’re opinion so bringing it up is irrelevant. It is not safe to say Aliens is the best in the series at all, being the most popular doesn’t make it the best, cant believe I have to point that out to you. Yep not surprising the film with dumb action is the most popular

          • PsychoMantis18

I’m glad i’m not the only one wasting time on this dope.

          • PsychoMantis18

You need to realise that opinions aren’t created equal; some actually have a certain level of thought and reason placed behind them, while others: misdirected sexual frustration and childish entitlement.

And looking at the boards – you’re in the minority of Alien fans this time, which is good as the series doesn’t currently have anymore time for morons – that’s how Aliens happened.

And does this mean you’ll be aware you’re wrong now? Cause you’re in the minority? Usually that’s how you numbskulls judge things, yeah?

          • Halloween_Vic

Sorry this was too long to read and coming from u too long for me to actually give a shit. 🙂

          • PsychoMantis18

            Ignorance is bliss.

          • Halloween_Vic

Awww thank you so much for noticing psychomantis18 you truly are amazing!!!!

          • wedellbudwhite

Doesn’t surprise me at all that short post is too long for you to read

          • Halloween_Vic

Awww and u took the time to reply to little ol’ me?

          • wedellbudwhite

You don’t see the irony in this ?

          • PsychoMantis18

Priceless pic to start the reply to the numbskulls.

          • PsychoMantis18

You are truly a delusional twit.

Alien, RIDLEY’s film, the FIRST film, STARTED THE WORLD OF ALIEN and gave cinema the GIGER XENOMORPH.

Cameron didn’t hire GIGER and was unable to make the GIGER XENOMORPH work in his vacuous sequel about the mundane fights and relationships of MORONs, so he ingeniously removed the iconic sleek-dome and translucent saliva, and had it replaced with macaroni cheese. And introduced the bug-concept to the series. Thanks JC.

Then Fincher did a Grady and ‘corrected’ the pre-pubescent jerk-fest, making a film much more in line with RIDLEY’S WORLD, thanks in part to the hiring of GIGER for another awesome XENOMORPH.

Finally, Jeunet came along and gave us a world that while similar (and superior) to Aliens in the action-department, blended his “French” aesthetics with those of RIDLEY and GIGER.

            JC’s world? Laughable.

          • Flu-Like Symptoms

You anti-Cameron guys are always good for a laugh.

          • wedellbudwhite

Sadly you aliens guys aren’t, the stupid shit you say fails to even be funny. By the way I’m not anti Cameron I’m anti aliens. I love Terminator Terminator 2 True Lies.

          • Flu-Like Symptoms

            Laughing > Not Laughing

          • wedellbudwhite

            More stupid responses

          • PsychoMantis18

And you Cameron guys are always good for nothing.

…Except for pathetic comebacks in which you “laugh” away the people who’ve just discredited your point.

          • Flu-Like Symptoms

I just can’t wrap my head around people who take entertainment as serious as you, and quite frankly, I don’t want to. You more than just about anyone else around here get your sensitive dick in a twist when someone says anything you disagree with. I could relate to that line of thinking when I was 16 or 17 (maybe), but now, I simply elect to laugh it away rather than waste my time arguing with close-minded haters who can’t fathom looking beyond their own limited, shallow perspective while conveniently ignoring facts they either pretend don’t exist, or just don’t want to be bothered taking the five mins required to find them.

          • PsychoMantis18

Blah blah blah, another idiot weaselling away by saying i’m sensitive and take film too seriously cause I criticised to their lengthy and utterly moronic comment.

Well done; you have no argument and are showing a complete lack of integrity.

          • wedellbudwhite

I don’t see any facts in any of your comments here. I asked you how’s its Cameron’s world and all I’ve got out of you as an answer is anti Cameron guys ( which I’m not ) are always good for a laugh and its better to laugh than not laugh.

Most people over the age of 16 can answer a simple question and explain they’re opinion instead of off the cuff dismissive responses

You also take entertainment serious enough to want to undo two films in the series and complain about it

          • PsychoMantis18

            ^This^

        • PsychoMantis18

          Cameron’s world?

    • Robin Hansson

Exactly my thought. Almost feels like Ridley just wants to keep making Alien films in order to keep Bloomkamp out lol

      • HappyClappy

        I’m glad.

    • Biscoito18

At least, they’re all prequels. If someday Blomkamp get to do his Alien 5 with Ripley (probably a 90 years old Weaver), he can without messing up the timeline even more.

    • Harley Mitchel Dirk

That’s for the best in my opinion. Keep Ripley dead and Blomkamp out. (At least he can follow up District 9 with something just as engaging. Elysium was dumb fun but Chappie was a trainwreck)

    • HappyClappy

      Good.

    • Halloween_Vic

Cause Ridley is a fucking cunt who got his panties in a bunch when he saw the hype for Blomkamps Alien 5.

      • PsychoMantis18

What hype? You mean in the Aliens fanBOY camp?

        • Halloween_Vic

You’re so intelligent psychomantis18 omg like how did u know? You truly are incredibly amazing!

  • Darkknight2149
  • Graham

I’m here for all of this, but what’s with the convoluted release pattern? If the order is Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant, why not release them as such?

    • Nahuel Benvenuto

i believe he just made a mistake

      • Graham

        That makes sense!

    • J Jett

      Graham i agree w/ you.

  • Biscoito18

“Awakening” is such a common title.
Underworld: Awakening, Amityville: The Awakening, The Awakening…
If its true, I hope they change it like they did with Covenant.

    • Halloween_Vic

      Ridley is pretty basic

      • Biscoito18

        True

      • PsychoMantis18

Coming from you that’s a laughable criticism undeserving of any merit.

        • Halloween_Vic

Oh jeez look who it is

          • PsychoMantis18

Yeap, the guy who always criticises your comments for the moronic drivel they are – AMAZING!

          • Halloween_Vic

It such an honor thank u so much psychomantis18!!!!

          • PsychoMantis18

It IS such an honour, Vic, it IS such an honour.

            But no worries, anytime.

  • llcc1103

A lesson on how to dilute a franchise. Star Wars.. now Alien.

    • Mindcontrol

      Agree

    • HappyClappy

      Disagree

  • Harley Mitchel Dirk

I’m pretty sure it’s a mistake to say Awakening is going to be set between Prometheus and Alien Covenant. Ridley probably just said the titles out of order.

    • PsychoMantis18

      This is possible

  • J Jett

so if Ridley didn’t mistake the placement of “AWAKENING” in this franchise’s movie timeline then maybe that means he plans on bringing Noomi/Dr. Shaw back and we’ll see what actually went down with her plan on confronting the Engineers (which i personally thought was a stupid plan) assuming it’s not fully revealed in COVENANT.

    • Alanmac

I’m certainly hoping that isn’t the plan. A sequel to a prequel to a prequel set between 2 prequels would confuse the fuck outta me.

      • J Jett

        Alanmac, I agree w/ you. 🙂

  • Judge Satchmo

I believe there are two possibilities. Possibility the first, Ridley wanted to make Awakening first, but with news of Alien 5 being green lit, and Fox’s determination to have a legitimate “Alien” movie, he skipped Awakening and made Covenant first. Thus destroying, for all eternity, Alien 5.

Possibility the second, Ridley is being held prisoner, and being forced to reveal all the secrets of Covenant against his will by Neil Blomkamp, who, at the very least, believes possibility the first to be true.

    • Judge Satchmo

Or possibility the third! George Lucas is wearing a Ridley Scott costume and is hell bent on destroying another iconic Sci-fi franchise!

  • Brian McNatt

Ugh… someone please stop him. It’s like he saw James Cameron’s plans for endless Avatar films and decided to try beating him at his own game.

Actually, there’s a thought. Was Scott actually really sore about how beloved Cameron’s Aliens is and is trying to systematically push the stuff it introduced out of the canon? Because I mean, that rumor going around that Covenant reveals David as the creator of the xenomorphs as we know them doesn’t really mesh with the queen xenomorph and hive concept, does it?

    • evilED

No, we’re quite happy to let him keep making more Alien films. Thanks for your concern, though. But don’t worry, there’s a Power Rangers movie about to drop. Maybe that’s more up your alley.

      • Brian McNatt

Yes, because exactly what the world needs right now is giant blobs of CGI banging away at each other on the big screen. Here’s to hoping they blare Kanye West’s “Power” over every fight scene in the most on-the-nose song choice the world has ever seen.

        • wedellbudwhite

It has nothing to do with Cameron. The big money makers are franchises, marvel universe, transformers etc. that’s what fox wants the alien the franchise to be.

the hive/queen idea from aliens is shit and just makes them into space ants. I bet you would have no issue with them rebooting the franchise after aliens though.

Giant cgi blobs are Camerons forte now, barely even bothers making sets anymore. nothing will top the cheesy on the nose “family” of newt ripley and hicks.

Do you even like alien or are you like most aliens fans and never watch it but say you like it?

          • Brian McNatt

I feel like that question’s structured where you can just say I’m lying if I answer wrong, but I’ll take my shot anyway. I owned Alien on VHS, currently own it on DVD and Blu-ray, own it off iTunes, own and have read the novelization, and keep the score on hand for when I’m writing a horror scene. I think I like the movie okay enough. Obviously here’s where you can respond “you’re just saying that”, but meh.

And if you want things even more unbelievable, I’m actually a real big fan of Alien 3. Wonderful return to the hopelessness of the first film, and the sets for the prison are still outstanding. Didn’t care for the look of the xenomorph much, with how they removed most of the mechanical aspects seen in the first film’s biomechanical design. Something you’ll also notice with the xenomorph seen in the Alien: Covenant trailer. Of course, 3’s design is still league’s better than Resurrection’s design. Too gooey, and the change from plantigrade to digitigrade legs makes them feel too animalistic to me, more like alien raptors than creatures that came from humans. Had the same problem with the xenomorph design in Alien: Isolation.

Sorry, I think my fake fan is showing.

          • wedellbudwhite

Na don’t think your lying just use to Aliens only fans. Owning a film in multiple medias doesn’t make you a fan though

i think digitigrade legs works for three coming from the dog/bull but for Resurrection I agree, didn’t play isolation because i don’t game, i find camerons aliens not gooey enough too dry. Though the animalistic change to the creature is a direct response to making them animals in aliens and it trickled down through the sequels. also the xenomorphs in aliens are my least favorite design, just hate them not having the dome on the head

          • Charles Cumella

Nice to know not everyone shits on Alien 3, I love it, and I agree it does give back a sense of hopelessness to the series and gives it more of a claustrophobic feel. Just had to say that.

          • PsychoMantis18

            Welcome to the club.

          • Chance LeBoeuf

I also have always played Movie Defense Force for Alien 3 because while Alien is still my personal favorite in the series, Alien 3 is nowhere near as terrible as everyone makes it out to be and deserves some credit still.

    • Khy

Someone stop this idiot from commentimg

      • PsychoMantis18

Aliens-fans can’t be stopped; much like their beloved pseudo-xenomorphs, they seem to flock to be shot down again, and again, and again..

    • HappyClappy

Ridley Scott is entitled to make as many Alien films as he wishes and also to take the franchise in any direction that he so desires.
Please feel free to stop watching any new Alien films and just continue to watch Aliens on repeat…forever..and ever..and………

      • Brian McNatt

That sounds boring. I think I’ll stick to the Alien VS Predator films instead. Now there’s some quality entertainment!

        • PsychoMantis18

Well, Aliens and the AvP’s are cornerstones of numbskull-entertainment.

          • Brian McNatt

The first AvP is like if an idiot tried adapting At the Mountains of Madness.

          • PsychoMantis18

            That’s not a bad analogy…

  • Khy

Alien forever. Keep them comin Ridley

  • Jonathan Larsson

If it makes him happy, he should do as much. I love creature features, but still, to me it feels a little odd. Scott has made a lot of different good movies, so just dedicating himself to this big series of projects… I dunno, it feels like he’s trying to turn it into the Lord of the Rings or Da Vinci Code of sci-fi horror, which ironically sounds really cool in itself.

  • Halloween_Vic

So then the next one after covenant will take place before covenant but after Prometheus?? Wow now that’s just stupid and confusing and literally at this point Ridley doesn’t know what to do he just wants to have the rights to making the Alien films because he doesn’t want BlomKamp to outshine him. Covenant does look bad ass but all these damm prequels and in between films and then another prequel and then a fucking drone was revealed to be the creator of the xenomorphs its like wait what??? I’d much rather prefer a true Alien Sequel!!! Bring in BlomKamp please and Ridley go talk to FOX about making Star Wars prequels instead seems more suited for you since technically the success of those recent films is what all of a sudden inspired your passion to want to come back and quote on quote make Alien films till you die.

    • wedellbudwhite

Nothing Bloomkamp does will outshine Alien Blade Runner Black Rain

      • Halloween_Vic

It doesn’t have to, it just needs to be good and deliver something fans want from the Ripley story.

        • wedellbudwhite

I’d be fine with another sequel with Ripley, just not a retcon. Bloomkamp is not the man to helm a alien film. I’m also happy if the director of the first film in the series wants to make films without Ripley

        • PsychoMantis18

          2 lessons for today –

          1. Real art doesn’t adhere to what “fans” want; it comes from artists who have a vision.

          2. It is a fallacy that “fans” want the same thing.

          Question –

Being that you think Blomkamp would ‘outshine’ Ridley, are you saying that on the strength of both directors filmographies, a Blomkamp film has a better chance of being “good” than a Ridley one?

      • PsychoMantis18

        Yay for this man!

  • Charles Cumella

I really hope Scott doesn’t go all “avant-garde” on us, and tries to make a prequel to a sequel for a prequel. That just sounds wrong, and I hope they just misquoted him or he made a mistake in the order… I am looking foward to another 5 movies if he makes ’em though!
