Strange New ‘Alien: Covenant’ TV Trailer Teases the Return of Shaw

Published

We love weird Easter eggs. So much.

I was getting ready to go to bed when I realized that FOX ended the night with yet another brand new TV trailer for Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. Running 30-seconds long, it mostly contains footage we’ve already seen, so it didn’t do much to excite me. But then I spotted something at the very end of the video. A hashtag. A backwards hashtag, to be specific: #EMOHEMEKAT.

Reading the hashtag forwards, it spells out “take me home,” which is also the name of the video. But where this gets really fun is when you search #EMOHEMEKAT on Instagram; doing so reveals a longer version of the new TV trailer, which is super strange and seems to provide us with our first look at the whereabouts of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw – Noomi Rapace’s Prometheus character.

We see Shaw’s dog tags and then, well, I’m pretty sure we see her. As a strange hologram. What the hell is going on here? I really have no idea. But I encourage you to watch both vids below!

Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice, Jobs, The Babysitters) stars with Michael Fassbender returning as Prometheus‘ android David (and Walter), with a crew that includes Demian Bichir and Danny McBride (“Eastbound and Down”), as well as Alex England (Gods of Egypt), Billy Crudup, Amy Seimetz (A Horrible Way to Die, “The Killing”), Jussie Smollett (“Empire”), Carmen Ejogo, and Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills). James Franco also has a role, confirmed in this short film.

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition

Scott had previously promised to answer questions that left Prometheus viewers confused: “Covenant is really going to show you who did it and why.”

Alien: Covenant takes off for Paradise on May 19, 2017.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
