What’s the Terminator franchise without Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Even when Edward Furlong’s John Connor was recast by Nick Stahl in Terminator 3, Schwarzenegger returned. He wouldn’t stay away even when the film was quasi-rebooted in Terminator Genisys. So, it comes as no surprise that he’ll be back in the yet-to-be-announced franchise finale.
Speaking to ScreenDaily in Cannes, where he is talking up new environmentally-focused documentary Wonders Of The Sea 3D with producer Francois Mantello and co-directors Jean-Michel Cousteau and Jean-Jacques Mantello, Schwarzenegger confirmed that he will star in a new Terminator film produced by James Cameron.
“It is back,” commented Schwarzenegger, who revealed that he had met Cameron recently and discussed the project. “It is moving forward. He [Cameron] has some good ideas of how to continue with the franchise,” the actor added, “I will be in the movie.”
When it was reported that The Terminator franchise was dead, we laughed it off because anyone who understands how the industry works knows that just because Paramount Pictures let the rights lapse, didn’t mean another studio would do the same.
In fact, the report was even more bizarre considering James Cameron is on the cusp of regaining the full rights to the franchise in 2019 and even had reported that he was eyeing Deadpool‘s Tim Miller to direct what they were calling “a reboot and conclusion” to the franchise.
Schwarzenegger recently left the door open to a return, so the fact that he’s speaking as if it’s a done deal means things are progressing a lot quicker than originally anticipated. Here’s what he said back in April:
“Cameron will be producing it, and there will be another director on it. I’m always looking forward to doing another ‘Terminator’, especially if the story is written well and it’s really entertains the whole world.”
Watch for an alleged huge announcement this year.
