Second ‘Leatherface’ Trailer Slices into Lots of New Footage

Which one of these characters is a young Leatherface?

We’re just over a month away from the release of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s Leatherface, a prequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic that goes all the way back to the beginning. We exclusively debuted the film’s red band trailer last month, and now EW got their hands on a brand new, green band version.

Thankfully, the new trailer isn’t just the first one with the gory bits cut out. Rather, it’s an entirely new trailer, loaded with footage we hadn’t previously seen. It also presents much more of a plot than the aforementioned red band trailer, giving us a better idea of what to expect when the chainsaw revs back up next month.

In Leatherface, Jessica Madsen plays one of four inmates (Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, James Bloor) who escapes from a mental hospital. One of them becomes the title character and iconic slasher.

Vanessa Grasse, Stephen Dorff and The Conjuring‘s Lili Taylor also star.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film, penned by Seth M. Sherwood:

“In Texas, years before the events of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriffs’ daughter dead. Ten years later, he kidnaps a young nurse and escapes with 3 other inmates. Pursued by authorities including the deranged sheriff out to avenge his daughter’s death, the young Sawyer teen goes on a violent road trip from hell, molding him into the monster known now as Leatherface.”

The film will get an exclusive DirecTV release on September 21, 2017, with a limited theatrical run and full VOD release through Lionsgate revved up for October 20, 2017.

    less is more.

Still looking forward but it looks so predictable whom Leatherface will be

  • Cali-Chainsaw

    Can’t Wait!!!!!!

  • Kyle Ord

I’m excited, and yet my expectations are low after Texas chainsaw 3D

    • Necro

      Yep same here

    • Aaron Johnson

I didn’t despise Chainsaw 3D. I mean, they tried to do something different, at least. I liked it better than the Hewitt ones that looked like music videos.

      • Kyle Ord

I loved the remake and prequel

        • Michael Edison Chandler

          me too

  • Forca84

Looks average. Can’t be any worse than “Chainsaw 3D” hopefully.

What’s interesting is that the Family looks messed up right off the bat. In a previous sequel it was because the Slaughterhouse shut down. Etc.

    • Nicolas Caiveau

Yes, it was in “Texas Chainsaw Massacre – The Beginning” but it was a different continuity, the remake one, with a different family, the Hewitts.

    • Aaron Johnson

In the original from 74 they were put out of work because of the air gun that kills cattle instead of the sledgehammer. “With the new way, people put out of jobs.”

  • Necro

Looks good to me! I’m glad to be going back to the ‘Sawyer’ family, the ‘Hewitt’ remake films were ok but in that they had the slaughterhouse reasoning for their actions, with the ‘Sawyer’s’ well they’re just fuckin nuts, period! Plus that ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ was meh, ok at best, so I HOPE this film gets fans talking positive again, myself included.

    • Michael Ferguson

they went back to the sawyer family with 3D

      • Darkknight2149

Yeah, but in that film, the Sawyers were watered down so that you would feel sorry for them. This film doesn’t seem to be doing that.

        • Necro

They were extremely watered down. This is looking like the psychotic ‘Sawyers’, a better look for them if you ask me.

      • Necro

Yeah I forgot to add ‘again’ in the first sentence. Going back to the ‘Sawyer’ family again.

  • Woow, looks really good!

  • Kaid Smith

    Better trailer!

  • dukeblues1

Looks awesome! Not cheesy like a lot of the modern horror movies

  • Travis_Bickle

    Can’t wait!Can’t wait!Can’t wait!Can’t wait!Can’t wait!Can’t wait!Can’t wait!

  • Matt Miller

    Lily Taylor is awesome.

  • Looks fucking excellent! Well, of course, Maury & Bustillo are fucking geniusses.

  • ItalianBadAss37

They must’ve done allot of re shoots. The script I have has an entirely different introduction for the kids in the truck, the birthday cake scene and the final confrontation.

    • Laura Kinney (X-23)

The script I read didn’t have a birthday scene in it. Mind you, it was the first draft.

  • Matheus Martins

No matter how decent this looks or even may be…

That generic skinny pretty boy teenage ”leatherface” kills every desire i could have to watch this.

    • WOW the skinny one is his brother! Leatherface is the big husky one.

      • Stogie Jones

No, the fat kid is but a decoy.

        • I thought it was Hurley from Lost for a second, haha

  • DBZEROGRAVITY

now that’s a freakin trailer! so much better than the first one

  • RJ MacReady

Moral of the trailer….never stop for a weird sheep in the road.

  • well that was impressive!! I wont get my hopes up too much but this could be real good.

  • Logan

Am I the only one getting a major Devils Rejects vibe from this? And that’s not a bad thing.

    • Laura Kinney (X-23)

NOPE. I’m sure we’re all thinking the same thing!! Rob Zombie ripped off TCM, now their creators are ripping off him with Rejects and Halloween, LOL

  • Derek

This just looks so generic and slow. Only real draw is Lili Taylor, and that’s coming from a huge TCM fan!

    • dukeblues1

You probably dislike older horror movies then huh? Like the original…. I don’t see anything slow about this but slow is not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t need constant action, in fact I prefer to not have constant action. To each his own though.

  • American Atheist

Origin stories suck. Haven’t they learned anything from Zombie’s atrocity of a remake/origin film?

    • Michael Edison Chandler

origin stories rule. Best part of spiderman is watching the transformation of Peter Parker into spiderman.

      • gabriel

        Venom

  • This looks a lot better, might give it a go, still hate that awful amateur poster though. EUGH.

  • dukeblues1

Not sure how anyone could not look forward to this. A serious looking horror movie without all the lame, modern, wise ass humor attempts that a lot of movies today try to bring (see Chainsaw 3D). It looks like a raw movie. What’s not to like?

  • THIS NEEDS TO GET WIDE fuck limited distribution

    • Laura Kinney (X-23)

      IKR?!

  • Graham Dalrymple

This trailer has me genuinely looking forward to this now,il remain cautious but this looks like it good be seriously good

  • Now I thought Leather face’s face was supposed to be deformed? In the remake, you see his face for a brief period of time and it was deformed… Am I missing something? As a kid here, he looks totally normal?

    • Laura Kinney (X-23)

This prequel’s going a different route.

      • Aahhh OK! Thank you for the explanation cause I was hella confused… haha

        • Laura Kinney (X-23)

This movie goes from Leatherface as a child, being seized by lawmen because of bad parenting by Verna Sawyer (as Sheriff Hartman suspects that the Sawyers are killing people, which they are!!)

Then we get to see him as a young man in the asylum, where he and others escape and go on the run during the night of a riot (That Verna instigates)

Apparently, the writer wanted Leatherface to be a normal guy from the start as apposed to being born deformed and retarded (aka The Beginning) and have his humanity stripped from him during the course of the movie, leaving behind only his primitive side, which we see in the original.

          • I can kind of vibe to the idea but would have loved to of kept him deformed and what not. Still excited though! Kind of gives me the Halloween reboot vibes where he was tortured in the asylum and he just went nuts. Although michael never had a deformed face.

Thank you for clearing it all up for me. I have a much better understanding now of the direction of this movie. I also hope that we will get to see him in his leatherface glory and that the movie isn’t MAINLY on his childhood. I love me some leatherface!

          • Laura Kinney (X-23)

No problem. October 20th can’t come fast enough!! (I unfortunately don’t have Direct TV, so I’ll miss the September 20th debut!!)

          • Wait, is it going to be VOD? EDIT – Nevermind, if I read the whole thing I would have seen that it says that haha

          • Laura Kinney (X-23)

I think it deserves a wide release IMO!!

          • I am actually shocked that it isn’t getting one. I wasn’t expecting that one. Maybe because the last one under performed? At least that’s what I heard. I personally enjoyed it!

          • Laura Kinney (X-23)

            Me too!!

  • Jshepich

I like the quick flash of young N
ubbins at the dinner table/birthday cake scene!!!!

  • Matty Ice 2016

How many orgin stories do we need. ? Geez.

  • Laura Kinney (X-23)

OH MY GOD, I can’t wait for this movie!! This is one of my MUST SEE films on my list. (The other being Jurassic World 2!!) This second trailer was better IMO, as we do see more of the story play out, not just gory shock value, although there’s northing wrong with that either.

But a good movie needs more than just gore and shock value. (That’s why I think this’ll be superior to remake’s prequel, The Beginning, which is just 90 mins of torture & mutilation and then it ends) You need a good story to go along with it. That’s why I think this film will succeed. It seems to have a decent story, a good cast (Well, Stephen Dorff and Lili Taylor anyway…)

We’ll just have to wait and see!! October 20th can’t come fast enough!!

  • Chris Risdal

Am I one of the only horror fans who think TCM is one of the worst franchises next to Hellraiser? Granted, this looks a hell of a lot better than the previous three but this series did not need multiple movies. That being said, I will still see the movie because I like to review them fairly but just thought I’d share.

  • chris hayes

    Looks fucking impressive to me……
