John Carpenter Has a Lot of Creative Involvement in Next Year’s ‘Halloween’

Published

We know that John Carpenter is executive producing David Gordon Green’s Halloween, but what exactly does that mean? Is Carpenter just accepting a paycheck, like he has on previous projects, or is he actually involved in bringing Michael Myers back to the big screen on a creative level?

Speaking with Coming Soon this week, producer Jason Blum answered that very question. The good news? Carpenter is interested in more than a check.

We don’t take any big steps without his approval, so for instance hiring David and Danny [McBride] he approved,” Blum told the site. “He approved their pitch, he approved their first script. He approved bringing back Jamie Lee Curtis. So anytime we make a big creative turn he’s involved with that and we don’t do it without his blessing.”

Blum continued, “We went to him and asked him to be involved. There was no contractual, financial or any other obligation to have him on this movie. We went back and asked him to join us again.”

Jamie Lee Curtis is returning for the new Halloween, potentially continuing the story from the first two (original) Halloween movies and presumably ignoring the rest.

The film was written by David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. Last we heard, John Carpenter may even provide the score. Filming begins this Fall.

Carpenter will executive produce the new film with Malek Akkad producing for Trancas and Jason Blum producing for Blumhouse. Gordon Green and McBride will also executive produce under their Rough House Pictures banner.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
