Todd McFarlane’s ‘Spawn’ Reboot Will Begin Filming in February

Creator Todd McFarlane has been talking about a new Spawn movie for what seems like forever now, but the project finally inched closer to reality earlier this year when it was announced that Blumhouse will produce McFarlane’s long-gestating passion project.

McFarlane wrote the script and is directing the film, which he promises will be dark and most definitely rated R.

Via Deadline today, McFarlane has provided an update on the project at New York Comic Con, revealing that Spawn will go into pre-production after Christmas, ahead of a February 2018 production start. He also promises to share daily updates from the set on his Facebook page.

It’s going to be dark,” McFarlane again noted. “I will have a shark in black water… and if you’re swimming he will come and you’ll be gone and he will fuck you up.”

McFarlane added, with confidence, “I’m spending my own money so who cares if it doesn’t work out. It’s a $10 million budget movie, and (a studio) would just get a 22-year-old punk director. I just want to be the old punk directing it.

Hopefully rated R for “Sadistic violence, disturbing behavior and a scene of bestiality”

  • Although Todd McFarlane has never directed a movie before, I like what I’m hearing in regards to his approach.

A passion project by the man himself…even if its a total blunder, hats off to the guy. Fuckin’ a. I might be alone, but I’m okay with Michael Jai White and Liguisaliaw (clown/violator) making a return to reprise their roles. I don’t blame either of them for the original, that I still had a lot of fun with.

Your not alone.Although those CGI effects where trash even back then, I loved John Leguizamo’s take on The Violator! Best thing about that movie IMO. The soundtrack was pretty good too mashing a hard rock band with an Electronica artist.

Hell yea, the last soundtrack to come close to Spawn was Queen of the Damned

        • Meatwad

That was a good one! I read somewhere Johnathan Davis of KORN was upset that the studio wouldn’t let KORN do these songs for the soundtrack resulting in him having other bands do them.

One of those times where things can really only go up from 1997,,,

Agreed Adam , the original was cool when i was like , 17 , but it ..hasn’t ..aged well.

    Tomorrow’s headline:

“Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot, just shut down production.”

      Or Todd McFarlane passes away

“I will have a shark in black water… and if you’re swimming he will come and you’ll be gone and he will fuck you up.”

        Umm…McSure thing. McFar-out!

Happy for Todd and Spawn as a fan. Regardless of how this plays out. This and The Crow are some of my favorite characters and stories! I would wanna to direct my baby also if it was my property! Hollywood isn’t always right!

    Member Frank Miller’s The Spirit?

Even if he makes a “hardcore” Spawn movie black-water-shark-style, the MPAA will surely cut the balls off of it, as they do with all low-budget “indie” horror films. Putting that aside, Mcfarlane has been pitching his idea publicly for years-Spawn is NOT going to be a central character. It would be a Sam and Twitch noir film with Spawn as the seemingly ONLY supernatural element-and a background one at that.

Can you explain that ” the MPAA will surely cut the balls off of it, as they do with all low-budget “indie” horror films” Can you give an example? I thought the studios were cutting movies to obtain the PG-13 or the NC-17 rating. Basically, for moneymaking. But you are saying something different.

      • quantumbleep

Just google “MPAA and Horror movies” and you will find countless examples of filmmakers forced to make nonsensical cuts to their films, from Friday the 13th through the Evil Dead remake.

Maybe he’ll bring in Kevin Smith to co-direct?

    Dont mess it up Todd

I guess the worst part for this movie will be the post-production. This can take a couple of years.
