[Box Office] ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ Underperforms, Which Is Fine Since It’s Neither “Original” Or “Risky”

Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D ended the weekend with an estimated $16.5 Million. While that’s not an unmitigated bomb, it’s certainly not a success given its reported production budget of $69 Million (tack at least another 30-40 on for P&A and I think a conservative number for the cost of the film still exceeds $100 Million). I guess there’s still a remote chance this movie makes its money back theatrically, but the C+ Cinemascore (indicating audiences didn’t really like the movie) means it will likely have a precipitous drop-off next weekend. As far as foreign numbers go I wouldn’t expect ALVH to expand much beyond its current take of $7.8 Million. Abe Lincoln is our historical figure, not so much the world’s.

Now, I didn’t outright hate the movie. I actually really enjoyed the first 30-40 minutes or so, but then the script lost me. There are some good performances and some cool set pieces, but there still needs to be some sort of narrative thrust if I’m going to be down with watching a guy in a top-hat kill vampires for two hours. The CG was fairly terrible and I found the film’s image itself unpleasant, too bright and contrasty. Whatever, it’s just another so-so movie, right?

But here’s the thing. I read a report this morning that claimed that the failure of ALVH to catch on could be a bad thing for “original” and “risky” films. That its the audiences’ way of telling studios that they want more remakes and sequels. This is 100% incorrect. And while I normally wouldn’t give much thought to this kind of reporting (or that kind of reporter), I know that this is the sort of thinking that many studio execs can latch onto.

In anything, the failure of ALVH is the failure of a pre-fabricated brand. It’s produced by Tim Burton. Timur Bekmambetov’s last movie, Wanted, did great business. It’s based on a popular book. It’s got vampires. It also has a recognizable brand name – our 16th president and civil rights hero Abraham Lincoln. Where’s the “risk” in this? How is this an audience rejecting an “original” movie? Even though ALVH isn’t a sequel, the reason it exists springs from the same mentality. That’s what mashups are – they are literally mathematical equations. The desire to combine a known entity with an X-factor in order to create a “new” marketable entity is a mutation of the sequelitis gene, not a break from it. Call it the KE+X=$$$ theorem if you want. Except, financially, it just didn’t work out this time.

Let’s talk more inside… READ MORE

[BD Review] Script Issues Hamper Action-Packed ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D’

In a world shrouded with remakes, reboots and pre-makes, it’s incredibly rare when a studio gets behind something wholly original. Twentieth Century Fox, who has been working diligently at getting back into the good graces of movie fans, made a bold move in adapting Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter into a major motion picture. Unfortunately, it’s not a product that’s going to inspire other studios to jump on the bandwagon. This new trend of “historical retellings” could already be dead…

Day Watch and Wanted’s Timur Bekmambetov gets behind the camera for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a should-be action-packed epic that becomes muddled with a lengthy timeline and weak character development. The story follows Lincoln, played by Benjamin Walker, as he grows up to become the 16th President of the United States. Along the way he witnesses a vampire murdering his mother and exacts revenge with the help of Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper), a Robert Downey Jr.-esque vamp slayer.

The main problem with the film is twofold, beginning with the tone of both the script and Honest Abe. First, the pic is missing a slightly comedic edge. Grahame-Smith’s screenplay takes itself way too serious, which is odd considering the “Scooby-Doo”-like plot/reveals. The audience is watching Walker caked in weak Abraham Lincoln make-up (that makes him look like a young Liam Neeson) fighting CGI-laden vampires on a blazing train, and they’re supposed to take it seriously? Come on now. But this issue wouldn’t be as glaring if Grahame-Smith had actually done research on the real Abraham Lincoln, a man who was beloved by his Illinois companions, who filled bars with jokes and conversation. In Vampire Hunter, Abe is told he must be a loner with no friends, family or loved ones. Thus, he’s portrayed as a boring recluse with zero personality, a complete 180 from historical facts. The movie strips him of personality and turns him into a revenge-obsessed junkie. It’s an amusing oversight as it literally destroys the fun of the movie and turns it into an overbearing bitch-fest filled with cool FX and fight scenes.

Grahame-Smith’s script gets even worse when it turns into the “Seinfeld” episode “The Yadda Yadda”. The first half establishes Lincoln’s character and early years before trailblazing over most of the Civil War to get to the climax. The second to third act transition completely loses the viewer and it’s muddled with exposition attempting to bridge act 1 and 3. In short, the middle of the movie is extremely boring. It’s as if he starts to explain what happens and then goes, “So the Civil War begins and yadda yadda, Abraham Lincoln is President now.”

And while the character development and screenplay are a complete mess, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, at times, is an incredibly interesting movie. The flick features some brilliant CGI work, incredible choreography, and even the vampires look dope. The fight scenes, while far and few between, are edge-of-your-seat exciting; the vampires are fierce, vicious and look terrifying (even though it’s all CG); and the finale is absolutely mind-blowing. If there were one reason to see this in fake, post-converted 3-D, it would be to see the epic battle sequel on the flaming train (as teased in the trailers and posters).

(Speaking of the 3-D, the cinematography was either garbage or Bekmambetov decided to turn up the contrast so the 3-D wouldn’t look so dark (a regular complaint along viewers). The entire film was blown out, so much so that I had to ask a Fox rep if we were watching the finished film (we were). Saying it looked terrible is an understatement.)

In the end, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is kind of fun, but wholly forgettable. It’s the kind of movie you see just to get out of the brutal summer heat by enjoying the theater’s cool air conditioning. By the time you leave the cinema you’ll be more concerned with finding the next air-conditioned establishment than talking about what you just saw. In fact, when your parents ask you what you did today, odds are you won’t even remember that you saw it.

To celebrate the release of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter this Friday, Twentieth Century Fox went on the hunt for ‘fresh blood’ in the art community.

The online Art Competition ‘Fresh Blood Hunt’ was an opportunity for budding creative talent to design an art piece inspired by the film for the chance to win a 17”Mac Book Pro and have their design painted by visionary street artist, Jim Rockwell (Endoftheline), as a mural on Great Eastern Street, East London.

The competition began on Friday 18th May and budding artists had until the 30th May to enter. After the competition closed, people had from 1st – 9th June to visit the site and vote for their favourite piece of art from 12 shortlisted entries.

The winning artwork was created by seventeen year old Emily Jane Neal from North Devon.

Emily said, “My inspiration for my piece was mainly about how Abraham Lincoln was the President of the USA. That is why I included the American flag and a well-known picture of him with his iconic hat on – so that anyone who saw my design would know that the film is about him.

[News Bites] ‘Devil’s Knot’ Casting, ‘Abraham Lincoln’ Rated “R” & Fresh ‘American Mary’ One-Sheet

Kristopher Higgins is in talks to join the cast of Devil’s Knot, says Deadline. The Secret Life Of The American Teenager star joins the already announced Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon in the drama about the West Memphis 3 that Atom Egoyan is directing. “The film tells the true tale of teens Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols, and Jason Baldwin, who were convicted in Arkansas of murdering three 8-year-olds in 1993 despite no physical evidence.” Higgins will play Misskelley. The trio were finally released last year. Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, the team behind The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, originally wrote the film’s script; Egoyan is now working with Boardman on a rewrite. The film is based on the 2003 book “Devil’s Knot: The True Story Of The West Memphis Three” by investigative reporter Mara Leveritt.

Usually I could care less about a film’s rating, but occasionally it’ll pique my interest. Such the case with Twentieth Century Fox’s Jonah Hex look-a-like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The film has officially been rated “R” by the MPAA “for violence throughout and brief sexuality.” The story revolves around the president’s quest to rid the world of vampires, presented as part of the conflict behind the Civil War. Benjamin Walker stars as the 16th President of the United States.

Inside we’ve added a new look at some sales art for American Mary, the latest genre offering from the Twisted Twins, Jen & Sylvia Soska, and starring Freddy vs Jason and Ginger Snaps alumni Katharine Isabelle. “American Mary is the story of a medical student named Mary who is growing increasingly broke and disenchanted with medical school and the established doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the messy world of underground surgeries which leaves more marks on her than the so-called freakish clientele.” You should become a fan on Facebook. Really.

[News Bites] Samuel Jackson For ‘RoboCop,’ ‘Twilight Zone’ Rewrites, Time Travel With ‘Glimmer’ & ‘Abraham Lincoln’ Director’s Cut

1samuel jackson 1024x295 [News Bites] Samuel Jackson For RoboCop, Twilight Zone Rewrites, Time Travel With Glimmer & Abraham Lincoln Directors Cut

Samuel L. Jackson is joining the cast of Robocop, MGM and Sony’s remake of the classic 1987 sci-fi action movie, reports THR. Jose Padilha is directing the film, which sees Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”) as the title hero, a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer. Gary Oldman has already been cast as his scientist-creator. Jackson will play Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world. Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are producing the movie, which is eyeing a September shoot in Toronto and has a tentative release date of August 9, 2013.

All You Need Is Kill scribe Joby Harold is in negotiations to rewrite The Twilight Zone for Warner Bros. and Appian Way, says Variety. Cloverfield helmer Matt Reeves is set to direct from a script originally penned by Jason Rothenberg and subsequently rewritten by Sherlock Holmes scribe Anthony Peckham. Unlike the 1983 feature that had four separate storylines, this pic will have one story that features elements from the “Twilight Zone” universe made popular by Rod Serling’s classic TV series.

They also report that, in a competitive situation, DreamWorks has shelled out mid-six figures to acquire Glimmer, a sci-fi/fantasy spec written by Carter Blanchard (Immortals). The script is described as an “Amblin-esque found-footage tale involving teenagers and time travel.” That’s just enough info to get me excited.

Lastly, below you’ll find a video trailer for “Director’s Cut: The Art of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” Conceived by director Timur Bekmambetov, this deluxe edition utilizes never-before-seen storyboards, as well as exquisite pieces of production art and conceptual designs to journey deep into the mythology of the film, telling the tale of Abraham Lincoln as seen through the eyes of “Adam,” an ancient and powerful vampire who rules the American South. Abraham Lincoln, in the guise of actor Benjamin Walker, who portrays the 16th president in the summer movie thriller Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and the film’s cast and crew, will visit the sailors serving aboard the Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in June.

As history’s most beloved U.S. president and, according to the movie, its greatest hunter of the undead, Walker will be joined aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln by co-stars Anthony Mackie and Erin Wasson, as well as by the film’s director Timur Bekmambetov, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith and producer Jim Lemley. Walker will introduce a special screening of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for the thousands of sailors serving on the carrier, and the cast and filmmakers will distribute Lincolnesque top hats, as well as fangs – tools that will help the sailors decide, in the words of one of the film’s promotional taglines, if they’re patriots or vampires.

The film is of course directed by Tim Burton.

Earlier in the week I had the chance to sit down with the film’s screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith to talk about working with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp to distill this soap opera from the 1970′s into something more attuned to today’s big screen experience. We also touched on future projects Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Beetlejuice 2. As for Unholy Night and Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, we only had so much time so I had to drop those from the conversation.

Seth Grahame-Smith Offers Updates On ‘Beetlejuice 2′, ‘Unholy Night’, And ‘Night Of The Living’

BeetleJuice40912 Seth Grahame Smith Offers Updates On Beetlejuice 2, Unholy Night, And Night Of The Living

Seth Grahame-Smith is, to say the least, a busy guy. His revision of the birth of Jesus and the three wise men, “Unholy Night”, is published tomorrow. He also wrote Dark Shadows for Tim Burton and adapted his book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for Timur Bekmambetov. But that doesn’t mean we won’t write the screenplays for Unholy Night, Beetlejuice 2 and a new project called Night Of The Living in quick succession.

He told the Hollywood Reporter, “‘Night of the Living’ is an idea I have had around for years that I’m doing with Tim Burton. When we were shooting ‘Dark Shadows’ last year I worked up the nerve to tell Tim about it because I always thought it would make a good movie. When I saw what he had done with ‘Frankweenie and Corpse Bride’, it always struck me as a great idea for that form. I’m writing it at Warner’s Bros. for him (as a stop-motion monster movie). As soon I’m done with that draft, I’ll move into ‘Unholy Night’, probably in a matter of weeks. Once we have a script and we’ll get together with David Heyman and the studio, we’ll go looking for a director. The ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel will come after ‘Unholy Night’ in my schedule. The first opportunity to tackle that will probably be later this year.

Smith is actually down the road a bit with Beetlejuice 2, he’s been discussing the project with both Tim Burton and Michael Keaton for a while now so it’s not necessarily a pipe dream. It could happen. While I’m not necessarily fond of the mashups he’s done with “Lincoln” or “Pride, Prejudice And Zombies”, he’s still an unknown quantity as a screenwriter to me. People seem to like working with him, maybe he’s better suited to the screenwriting trade than he is to gimmicky novels.
