Nice! I guess the fact that director Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies is nearing a $100M global take doesn’t hurt things, but All The Boys Love Mandy Lane (read our review) is a damn good movie on its own and is finally going to be legit available to all of our North American readers. That’s right, almost seven years after The Weinstein Company bought the film (and insanely shelved it) it’s finally coming out.
In an interesting turn of events, Radius-TWC has wrangled up the rights. The “TWC” there stands for the “The Weinstein Company.” Years after they decided they didn’t know what to do with the film and sold it to Senator Entertainment (who subsequently went bankrupt) they’ve sort of bought it again! MTV talked to Rodriguez about the sequel, explaining why Lindsay Lohan didn’t return as the gun-toting April, “We thought to bring her back because we like that character, but it didn’t fit into the story.” He also talks about the next film, Machete Kills Again in Space, “[W]e’ll have to see what happens in this one. There are some cliffhangers. It’s gotta end in a very ‘Empire Strikes Back’ way. You gotta want to know what happens to everybody.”

Bloody Disgusting learned out of AFM that Stealth Media is getting behind Splinter and The Grudge 3‘s Toby Wilkins latest creature feature, Dead Sand, which will star Zombieland and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane‘s Amber Heard (pictured). In the film, “Two humvees tear across a desert. Soldiers escort a captured terrorist leader, Gabir. During a “pit stop,” Gabir escapes into a nearby abandoned industrial complex. The sodliers chase, but before they find Gabir…an inhuman creature finds them. A frightful radio transmission is all that remains of their final mission…”
K5 International has boarded international sales for Robert Eggers’ The Witch of New-Canaan Woode, reports Screen Daily. “The horror film is set in 17th century New England, where a farming family is tormented by an evil witch.” The shoot is planned for spring/summer 2013.
Meanwhile, Maniac‘s Elijah Wood has boarded Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo’s first English-language picture Open Windows, an innovative, high-tech suspense thriller unfolding on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet. Shooting began this week on a high-security set in Madrid. It is Vigalondo’s third feature after the 2008 time-travelling tale Timecrimes and Extraterrestrial, a hit on the fantasy film festival circuit over the past 12 months. “The plot revolves around a desperate search by Wood’s character for an actress, played by The Girlfriend Experience lead Sasha Grey, who has been abducted by vicious villain Chord, played by British actor Neil Maskell.” Spanish producer Lavigne revealed the production would use 12 different types of camera, including webcams, head cameras, tablets, mobile phones, 3D mapping cameras as well as security and satellite cameras to shoot the multi-format picture.
Ryan Kampe’s Visit Films has acquired world sales rights to M Blash’s The Wait starring Jena Malone and Chloë Sevigny, the site also reports. “‘The Wait’ charts what happens when a mysterious phone call from a psychic plunges a family into a state of suspended belief while waiting for their recently deceased mother to be resurrected.” Luke Grimes also stars.
Open Road is getting into the horror genre, hardcore. With Silent Hill: Revelation primed for theaters next weekend, they’ve now got their next sequel on their hands.
The company behind The Grey has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Machete Kills, The Robert Rodriguez-directed sequel that brings back Danny Trejo as the blade-savvy former Mexican Federale, reports Deadline. Check out the first official image inside!

Marko Zaror (pictured below), an international martial arts action star, just finished filming Machete Kills, the sequel to Robert Rodriguez’s cult favorite Machete, Twitch was the first to learn. Zaror joins an all-star ensemble cast, including Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, and Jessica Alba. Zaror, dubbed the Bruce Lee of Latin America, is cast as Zaror (which happens to be his real last name), henchman to Mel Gibson’s villainous character.
In other brief casting news, the LA Times reports that Samuel Jackson (above) and Bruce Hornsby have joined the cast of the English-language remake of Chan-wook Park’s cult favorite Oldboy. Jackson will play the man who is being tortured by the hero (Josh Brolin) in a key revenge scene. Fans of the original will remember the scene as perhaps the most visceral and disturbing of the film. Protagonist Dae-su Oh exacts vengeance on a man who once guarded him by extracting his teeth one-by-one with the claw end of a hammer. The new film, which begins shooting this fall in Louisiana and New York, won’t go with the tooth removal, instead inflicting a different kind of torture, says the mag.
The duo star alongside Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley in the Spike Lee-directed thriller. In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Brendan Fraser will star in writer-director Damian Lee’s action-thriller Split Decision for Rollercoaster Entertainment and Vortex Words + Pictures, says THR. Fraser plays a father who must defend his two children from a pair of murderers. “The plot kicks off when two children (Holly Deveaux and Christian Martin) witness a murder while on a wilderness camping trip with a family friend (Daniel Kash). When two criminal brothers, (Dominic Purcell and Ethan Suplee) start to hunt down the children to silence them, Fraser’s father-figure sets out to rescue them.” Amy Price-Francis appears as the children’s mother. Principal photography begins shortly on location in Ontario.
The site also reports that Kevin Zegers has signed on to join Harald Zwart’s fantasy epic The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones for Constantin Film and Screen Gems. Zegers will play Alec Lightwood, a reluctant Shadowhunter who would rather read about demons than fight them. Lily Collins stars in the film, based on Cassandra Clare’s mega-bestseller. Zegers joins a cast that also includes Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey and Jared Harris. “Set in modern-day New York, the plot centers on Clary Fray (Collins), who discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret tribe of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect the world from demons.” Mortal Instruments is scheduled to begin shooting this month in Toronto.
After directing the acclaimed documentaries Deliver Us From Evil and West of Memphis, Amy Berg is set to make her narrative helming debut with Every Secret Thing, a feature adaptation of Laura Lippman’s 2004 mystery novel that will star Diane Lane, reports Variety. Nicole Holofcener wrote the script that “Follows two 11-year-old girls who are convicted of murdering a baby and incarcerated until they turn 18. Upon their release, children start to go missing; as the police turn their attention to the duo, the mystery surrounding the original murder takes the fore.” Lane is attached to play one of the girls’ mother, who has long known that her daughter is a gifted liar.

Wow. Half of me feels like this is a crass, TMZ style approach to casting – and the other half of me can’t wait to see this movie (even though I didn’t like the first one). Charlie Sheen (Wall Street, Platoon “Two And A Half Men”) has been cast as the U.S. President in Machete Kills, the sequel to Robert Rodriguez’ Machete. Earlier today he admitted that his meltdown last year was brought on by a psychotic break, so you have to wonder if him diving into this role along with his new series “Anger Management” is a good idea for him personally. Either way, between him and Mel Gibson Machete Kills is certainly making some brave casting choices.

Robert Rodriguez has stated that he’ll like to solo-direct the sequel based on his faux trailer included in Dimension’s 2007 Grindhouse.
Bloody Disgusting is exclusively being tipped off that Amber Heard – the genre hottie from All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, The Stepfather, Zombieland and The Ward – has been offered the lead role in Vital Pictures’ indie thriller Subject 6.
James Seda is directing from his own screenplay where Heard would play the title character who’s part of a government experiment. “Sealed in an isolation room under constant surveillance, a psychology student, believing she’s a paid participant in a month-long behavioral study, starts to believe she’s actually a prisoner who must escape before she loses her mind.”
The film is described as in the vein of The Matrix, Dark City, and the cult-classic Cube.
In a few recent interviews, John Carpenter has all but admitted his disdain for working on films. Although he’s kept up to date with the genre, he seems to have lost his zeal for the creativity that once defined his oeuvre. Scoring? Too much work. Writing? Too much work. By choice, it’s been almost ten years since his last feature – even longer since his last GOOD one – and after attaching himself to as many projects as del Toro, he returns to the cinesphere with The Ward, which proves that he also thinks directing is too much work.

Official: In John Carpenter’s THE WARD, Kristen, a beautiful but troubled young woman, finds herself bruised, cut, drugged, and held against her will in a remote ward of a Psychiatric Hospital. She is completely disoriented, with no idea why she was brought to this place and no memory of her life before being admitted. All she knows is that she isn’t safe. The other patients in the ward, four equally disturbed young women, offer no answers, and Kristen quickly realizes things are not as they seem. The air is heavy with secrets, and at night, when the hospital is dark and foreboding, she hears strange and frightening sounds. It appears they are not alone. One-by-one the other girls begin to disappear and Kristen must find a way out of this hellish place before she, too, becomes a victim. As she struggles to escape, she will uncover a truth far more dangerous and horrifying than anyone could have imagined.
