[Random Cool] Amazing Unused Life Magazine Photos From ‘Creature From The Black Lagoon’

Back in 1953 Life Magazine sent a photographer to the set of Creature From The Black Lagoon, and yet somehow these pics never made it to the actual magazine. But they’re fantastic, showing the technicolor vibrancy of the costume and really contextualizing the real world in which the illusion was constructed.

These color corrected copies come from Gammi Illustrations. In the film, “A scientific expedition searching for fossils along the Amazon River discover a prehistoric Gill-Man in the legendary Black Lagoon. The explorers capture the mysterious creature, but it breaks free. The Gill-Man returns to kidnap the lovely Kay, fiancée of one of the expedition, with whom it has fallen in love.

Uni Still Developing ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ Remake

Dave Kajganich, who wrote the Daniel Craig-Nicole Kidman thriller The Invasion several years ago, has been tapped to pen Universal’s remake of Creature From the Black Lagoon, reports THR. The studio has been trying to remake the title since the early 1980s and Kajganich is starting from scratch.

The 1954 movie centered on a prehistoric water-breathing humanoid monster that lived in a remote Amazonian river and a group of scientists that want to study him.

Despite earlier reports, Carl Rinsch is not attached to direct. Eric Newman and Marc Abraham of Strike Entertainment are producing as well as Gary Ross and Allison Thomas via their Larger Than Life Productions. (Ross’s father was one of the writers on the original.)

Kajganich is known for his horror scripts. Invasion paved the way for him to work on the remake of Pet Sematary. Recently he worked on high-profile adaptation of Stephen King’s It and The Stand, which are in development at Warners. READ MORE

[Blu-ray Review] Relive Horror History With ‘Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection’

After the success of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame in 1923, Universal began its now eighty-plus year horror fixation with The Phantom Of The Opera. Under the watch of Carl Laemlle Jr.’s, Universal produced Tod Browning’s Dracula and James Whale’s Frankenstein, both of which are among the most influential and recognizable horror films ever made – the Spanish version of Dracula, shot at night on the same sets the English-language version used, is considered to be superior and equally important by many. From the 30’s until the late 50’s, Universal produced the bulk of their “classic” monster films, including The Mummy (a property the studio has bastardized far past the point of return), The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, and – a personal favorite of mine – Creature From The Black Lagoon. With make-up pioneers like Jack Pierce, incredible directors like James Whale, and horror personas like Lon Chaney Jr., Boris Karloff, and Bela Lugosi (and to a lesser extent, the “cross-over” film), Universal forever changed the horror landscape. Rejoice! Pinball Arcade Preserves ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ Digitally!

The crew at Pinball Arcade have been working feverishly at preserving some of the greatest pinball machines ever made. Arcade, which carries “Theater of Magic,” “Black Hole,” “Tale of the Arabian Nights” and more, is currently available on a wide variety of platforms: the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tables, the Kindle Fire, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and Macintosh, with versions coming soon for the PC, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Wii U.

With (the absolutely incredible) “Monster Bash” and “Gorgar” already available, “Creature from the Black Lagoon” has just hit devices, with the infamous “Twilight Zone” table coming at year’s end. What makes this special is that this preserves the machine digitally for future generations.

“Creature from the Black Lagoon” is a pinball machine designed by John Trudeau (“Dr. Flash”) and released by Midway (under the Bally brand name). It is loosely based on the movie of the same name. The game’s theme is 1950′s drive-in theater. Its major feature is a holographic creature, set in the middle of the playfield, that lights up and waves its “hand” back and forth during multiball play. The holograph is set behind a green plastic insert, so that the monster appears green. The game was licensed from Universal Studios by Bally so that the backglass artwork, the cabinet artwork, and the creature looked like the original movie actors and monsters.-Wiki

This table is currently #17 on Pinside’s list of the top tables of all time!
