Everything’s PG-13! But We Knew That Already!

The MPAA released their latest batch of ratings and every movie they covered that we’re interested in got a PG-13 rating. From Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim to the Dark Horse adaptation R.I.P.D. to Takashi Shimizu’s 7500.

Honestly, it’s not a surprise at all. Nor is it really a bad thing. That may be confusing in light of the editorial I wrote yesterday taking down the exhibitors wish for less “R”-rated movies, but I don’t think any of these three movies were ever designed to be anything other than PG-13. Pacific Rim is a giant $200M movie about robots fighting monsters and R.I.P.D. is a Men In Black style comedic romp.

The only thing I think is really up in the air is 7500. It’s been so delayed I’d imagine there’s probably some behind the scenes futzing around on that one so who knows what went on. But at least this confirms they’ve got a cut ready! Now, when will they release it?

In the long run, as long as these movies are good – I’ll be happy.

‘R.I.P.D.’ Poster Emphasizes Stars Over Fun

Universal Pictures’ R.I.P.D. is aiming for a July 19th release and has started their hype machine. While I’m actually hearing good things about the footage out of Cinemacon – and that we’ll be able to see a trailer this week, I’m sort of disappointed in this poster. It’s just so grey and bland. Jeff Bridges awesome mustache still stands out though.

Robert Schwentke directs the Dark Horse Comics adaptation in which a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Mary-Louise Parker, Marisa Miller, Mike O’Malley, James Hong, Robert Knepper and Tobias Segal star.

‘R.I.P.D.’ Actually Exists! Photographic Evidence!

Universal Pictures’ R.I.P.D. is aiming for a July 19th release, and they’re down to the wire. This film has been in the works for longer than I have even been working here (one of my first news posts was a set pic) and could possibly even still be shooting (they were a month ago). This leaves very little time to lock picture and postconvert to 3D, but I hold out hope.

Anyway, EW scored the first pic from the film. It looks aight. Jeff Bridges definitely has some cool mustache stuff going on and I did his golden gun. Let’s just hope this isn’t wht Wild Wild West of the undead.

Review: ‘Black Beetle: No Way Out’ #1

There was always something about pulp heroes I found intriguing growing up. For one thing, they were nearly impossible to find except for random magazine articles or movies on TV late at night. I think what I found most fascinating was that these heroes existed in another era, back when my grandparents were young. Also, I knew almost nothing about them. Now comes a new addition to this pulp pantheon in the form of The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 and it is pure enjoyment. READ MORE

Yesterday we premiered various covers from Dark Horse’ horror lineup. Now we are pleased to present you with an exclusive first look at the epic Criminal Macabre / 30 Days Of Night Crossover event “Final Night”. This is not your typical series crossover, this is a full-on publisher crossover! Dark Horse and IDW unite to combine the works of horror author extraordinaire, Steve Niles.

“Final Night” sees the hero of “Criminal Macabre”, Cal McDonald, come face to face with Eben Olemaun, the ex-sheriff vampire of “30 Days of Night”. Niles said about the event, “Only one franchise is going to survive this series, and I give you my word on that. It’s not one of these ‘Batman dies’ things — one of these series is going to be destroyed.” Joining Niles is Christopher Mitten on art duties, and Justin Erikson from Phantom City Creative on cover art. The story will run over the course of four issues, the first of which is set for release on December 12th, 2012. After several weeks of waiting, I’m rather pleased that Dark Horse finally released a new issue in the “B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth” saga, The Return of the Master part 1. Why You Shouldn’t Be Reading ‘The Goon’

5/5 Skull Review: ‘Mind MGMT’ #2

There are books that deserve to be re-read because of their, “what-the-eff-just-happened-I’m-not-sure-but-it-was-completely-kick-ass,” factor. Mind MGMT is undoubtedly this type of book. As a new title, released by Dark Horse and written by Matt Kindt, it is highly entertaining, engaging, and thought provoking. After just the second issue I went stumbling back to the first issue for a re-read. Even the cover of issue 2# holds intricate details that might be missed with only a cursory glance. For those of you haven’t seen the cover (or have and didn’t notice) there are a multitude of words hidden in the stitches on the mysterious character’s face: “power, murder, hate, grudge” and fittingly around the throat is, “choke.” READ MORE

Preview: What Big Teeth You’ve Got, “Alabaster: Wolves” #2

It’s official, Alabaster: Wolves is every bit as good as we hoped it would be. Caitlin R. Kiernan had no problem bringing her Albino teen huntress to the comic world, and we imagine it’s only going to get better. Kiernan’s writing style is fluid, real, and it drags you right into her strange world where nothing is as it seems upon first glance. In the second issue, Dancy may have escaped from her fist assailant, but something horrific and hairy awaits her. Werewolves have not been cool for a while, and Kiernan is doing one hell of a job to bring them back. “Alabaster: Wolves” is dark fantasy at it’s finest. Don’t miss this book, it’s the talk of the motherflippin’ town. Check the preview for issue #2 below from Dark Horse. READ MORE

Review: B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth: The Pickens County Horror #2

Something is definitely wrong in Pickens County, but the presence of a family of vampires is only the beginning! The two-part B.P.R.D. arc entitled “Pickens County Horror” comes to a thrilling and mysterious ending as agent Vaughn puts the FO in GTFO. I have a tickling sensation that this won’t be the last time we see the paranormal mushroom related activity in Mignola’s Hell on Earth event. READ MORE

Review: B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Pickens County Horror #1

I’ve gone from knowing a bit about Hellboy and knowing nothing about BPRD to being a big fan in the past few weeks. Nothing better than being plunked down into the middle of eerie story! With all this new age vampire garbage like Twilight (puke) it’s tough to take anything vampire related seriously, whether it be a novel, a comic, or film. Thankfully, Dark Horse Comics didn’t get the “pop culture” memo! Vampires are back and they will take the world by storm, or so they hope, thanks to Mike Mignola and Scott Allie’s newest installment of Hell on Earth. Not like I expected anything else, but it’s another great issue in the Mignola world.

Review: B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Long Death #2

As far as the comic realm goes I am relatively new to Hellboy let alone the BPRD books affiliated with the big red bastard. I’ve always been a huge fan of the del Toro films, but I just never got around to reading the source material. When I picked up Dark Horse’s newest BPRD series, BPRD Hell on Earth: The Long Death, I was devastated by the fact that I am so far behind the times! Why wasn’t I reading more of this earlier! Blood and gore galore (see what I did there?), a big mean cat-creature from hell, and the spectral wonder Johann Kraus; where could you go wrong? I think I’ve found my new obsession. Hold The Phone, Buffy Star To Write Drusilla Comic!

Buffy saw a lot of characters come and go over the years, but perhaps the only non-central character to become a fan favorite was Drusila. She was a complete nutjob, throughout her 17-episode run, and it was only a matter of time before we saw her again. But the big surprise is that the actress herself, Juliet Landau, is writing the comic mini-series!

We recently saw Joshua Jackson jump from actor to comic writer with DC’s new Fringe series, so perhaps this is a sign of things to come. Drusilla is set for a five-issue run, picking up right where she left off in the show. You can expect the first issue to drop in June. Read on for the skinny

Review: Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi #2

If the Star Wars were movies were a long time ago and the Old Republic was ten thousand years before that, I guess there’s not much before the Old Republic, right? WRONG! Laser beams and star fights don’t just pop out of no where and start giving people seizures; they have an origin that dates back tens of thousands of years before the films were even made. Thanks to the brilliant minds of John Ostrander, Jan Durrsema, and Dark Horse, this story is unfolding in a spectacular manner. Read on for the skinny…
