Dead Kaiju Takes Up Several City Blocks In Newest ‘Pacific Rim’ Image

Warner Bros. teases yet another image from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. This time they’ve sent out an image of a Kaiju Skeleton with the text “We will rebuild the city around its bones.” Kaiju are the monsters in the film, which are put to bay by giant robotos built by humans played by Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

In theaters July 12, “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

New ‘Pacific Rim’ Image Doesn’t Tread Lightly!

Warner Bros. has released a new image from from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, and it’s another in a long line of signifiers that suggest the size of the Kaiju. I mean, yeah, big foot print. While I love the trailers for this movie and I’m sure it will be good and all that, I’m also growing a little bit worried that it’s relying on sheer enormity to keep us entertained. I understand that it’s a robots vs. monsters movie in many ways, but the best of these films have human characters that really pop. Hopefully Pacific Rim is has charm to spare beyond the traditional archetypes.

Concept Art Sneaks Peaks Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

Magazine Total Film has shred a pair of concept art from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, in theaters July 12 from Warner Bros. Pictures.

The first puts the overwhelming scale of the Jaegers into perspective, as a Russian collosus stands guard, dominating the skyline. The second features a freaky Skull Temple that’s fused with its derelict urban surroundings, says the site. You can see those pieces by Doug Williams below.

Finally Some Ass-Kicking Imagery From Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’!

USA Today has preemed a handful of sweet new images from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, his giant monsters vs. robots movie in theaters July 12 from Warner Bros.

Del Toro is halfway through finishing the special effects but Pacific Rim is already “the only movie I’ve done where I don’t want it to end, frankly,” says the filmmaker (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), who co-wrote the screenplay with Travis Beacham. And it won’t have to end for now: They’re already working on a sequel, as previously reported. The film is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.

There’s more than just that anomaly in the future world of Pacific Rim, del Toro says. “It’s really creating a world that’s been shaped by two anomalies: the giant monsters and the giant robots we create to fight them.

‘Pinocchio’ Not Fossilized Just Yet!!

Yesterday we reported that Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, a stop motion animated project he was set to co-direct with Mark Gustafson (animation director for Fantastic Mr. Fox) for the Jim Henson Company, had been put on hold.

The report stemmed from a series of tweets from writer/artist Chris Grimly in which he said, “Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick… There are people like us out there. But they look at numbers. Frankenweenie was a box office failure to them.

Now Grimly clarifies his statements to Dread Central, and they seem a little less… grim, “I want to clear up the rumor that was started due to misconstrued information that I posted on my networks. Pinocchio is indeed kicking and has interest from the studios. Although, I thought it could be quiet for a little while, I never thought it could be canceled. It’s just too good.

It sounds more hopeful I suppose, but the road ahead is long indeed.

Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ Will Have To Wait To Become A Real Boy

We last reported on Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio back in May. At the time he was set to co-direct it with Mark Gustafson (animation director for Fantastic Mr. Fox) for the Jim Henson Company.

Del Toro has been working on this project since 2008 with writer/artist Gris Grimly, and it’s Grimly who broke the bad news on Twitter last night. Per Bleeding Cool he said, “Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick… There are people like us out there. But they look at numbers. Frankenweenie was a box office failure to them.” The tweets have since been deleted and it’s hard to know exactly what this means – if some kind of plug has been pulled or if momentum has just slowed.

In the meantime, I wouldn’t call this project dead, just resting. It’s entirely possible it could get on its feet again. It’s likely that the financial underperformance of Frankenweenie (which is a bummer since I loved that movie) is a contributing factor here, but if Pacific Rim is a hit maybe Del Toro gets enough juice to push this through.

[Box Office] ‘Mama’ Has HUGE Opening Weekend! Horror Reigns Again!

Universal released Mama, the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller about a group of feral children raised by something sinister, on Friday and it cleaned up over the weekend. A $10 Million Friday translated into an estimated $28.1 Million dollar weekend ($33.2 if the 4-Day projections hold for the MLK Holiday). That’s a lot of money!

Even if I didn’t totally love the movie (nor did Brad, you can read his review here), there’s plenty to admire about it, particularly the fact that its story is pretty original. And that $33 Million more than doubles its $15M production budget. It had a not great B- cinemascore, but exit polling revealed that audiences liked it more than Texas Chainsaw 3D so expect it to not drop like a rock like that one did.

Now if we can only get this many people to hit the theaters for Evil Dead in April and You’re Next in August!

Hunnam Moves From ‘Pacific Rim’ To ‘Crimson Peak’

Charlie Hunnam (pictured inside; “Sons Of Anarchy”) is set to star in his next Guillermo del Toro project. Per Variety, the Pacific Rim star is in negotiations to join Emma Stone (Zombieland) in Crimson Peak.

Plot details are being kept under wraps as del Toro and Lucinda Coxon rewrite the original script penned by del Toro and Matthew Robbins.

Legendary Films will produce and be a participating financing partner on the movie, with Universal Pictures retaining an option to finance at a later date. The film is set to begin shooting in February 2014. READ MORE

[BD Review] Brad Is Mixed On ‘Mama’

Universal releases Mama, the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller about a group of feral children raised by something sinister, today, January 18th. Brad (Mr. Disgusting) saw a lot to like in the film, but ultimately couldn’t make it past the film’s extreme overuse of CGI and some muddled character development.

We see Mama way too much, there are too many effects shots in general, and for whatever reason Muschietti felt the need to have Mama performing acrobatics like bending backwards off walls and twisting into inordinate shapes. Some of the most haunting and jump out of your seat scary moments are subtle and quick, not long winded and showy… The most disappointing aspect of Mama is that the original idea is fantastic, and some of the scares are out of this world effective. But ultimately poor writing, editorial and effects decisions transform it into a long winded, almost faux horror movie.

[Interview] ‘Mama’ Filmmakers Discuss Retaining Their Original Vision

Universal releases Mama tomorrow, January 18th. The Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller is based on a short of the same name and was directed by Andres Muschietti from a script he wrote with Barbara Muschietti.

Along with some fellow journalists, I caught up with Del Toro and the Muschiettis last month to talk about the film’s journey from short to screen. We also touch on the intensive casting process, retaining autonomy on such an original vision, and finally just a tiny update on Hellboy 3.

In the film, “Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home. As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.” Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse and Daniel Kash all star.

New ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer Boasts Additional Robot Action (If Not Much Else)!

Warner Bros. cut together a new trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim for Qualcomm’s CES event. This time around you see a little bit more of the monsters and quite a the bit more of the Jaeger robots. I’m sure we’ll be getting another trailer in the coming months that shows a lot more, but for now I’m cool with this revised take on the older one.

In the film, “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Guillermo del Toro Confirms He Is Working On A Supernatural DC Comics Movie ‘Dark Universe’ With Swamp Thing And Others

Hell yes! A while back we reported that del Toro was involved with some kind of supernatural DC flick, and now he’s confirmed suspicions and listed some characters that would be involved in the production. The project is tentatively titled Dark Universe.

In the interview with IGN, del Toro says, “Swamp Thing, for me is a rock star. The Demon, Etrigan, is amazing. And then you go to Constantine, who I thought is an amazing creation — and I want to do the Constantine of the comics. Deadman is really a lot of work, but a lot of fun. [The Spectre is in,] yes…”

Still not much is known about the film. There is currently no script written and the film is not greenlit, so who knows when/if this will take off. Regardless, color me stoked. READ MORE

Guillermo Del Toro Trying Once More For A Tom Cruise Infused ‘At The Mountains Of Madness’

Your daily grain of salt here, please take me before reading this article. Guillermo del Toro, the man of a million projects (wisely) in development, has made overtures about giving his H.P. Lovecraft adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness another shot.

The project died at Universal back in 2011 due to budget issues, and recently del Toro seemed leery of reviving it due to perceived similarities with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Well, he saw Prometheus and he doesn’t think it’s such a stumbling blaock after all.

Speaking to the Playlist he said, “I’m going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss… We’re gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio's] interested… Tom [Cruise] is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He’s been such a great ally of the project.” As for Prometheus he says, “Not really, I saw it finally and.. yes, there are things in common, but, you know, screw it. Lovecraft was there first!

The would-be H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “tells the story of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins (including strange fossils of unheard-of creatures and carved stones tens of millions of years old) and a dangerous secret of the City of the Old Ones that lay beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas.

You’ll be able to see GDT’s directing chops back in action when Pacific Rim opens on July 12th. READ MORE
