Watch a Halloween Short Spoof from Master of Horror John Carpenter!

True to the horror icon’s spirit, John Carpenter introduces his “first and last appearance on Funny or Die” with a very special Halloween spoof that combines Charlie Brown and All Hallow’s Eve. Entitled “Charlie Brown: Blockhead’s Revenge“, Carpenter calls the short “Terrifying, terrifyingly disappointing.”

The grittiest, sexiest, scariest reboot of this Fall stars the cast of MTV’s “Teen Wolf” (Dylan O’Brien, Colton Haynes, Tyler Hoechlin & Holland Roden).

It’s a pretty hilarious short with suggestive jokes and plenty of gags – too bad he didn’t direct them… READ MORE

[OMFG] John Carpenter’s First Student Film is Unearthed at USC!

john carpenter voyeur102611 [OMFG] John Carpenters First Student Film is Unearthed at USC!

Just a day after the anniversary of Halloween‘s release, the first student film from famed horror director John Carpenter has been found in the archives at the University of Southern California and will be restored with the help of a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation, reports THR.

Carpenter wrote and directed “Captain Voyeur” for an introductory film class at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts in 1969. About eight minutes long, the black and white film has visual and thematic ties to the writer-director’s 1978 classic Halloween, according to Dino Everett, the archivist who discovered the preprint materials in a negative at USC’s Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive.

‘Captain Voyeur’ follows a man at a boring computer job who eyes a woman at work and follows her home. He dons a mask and attempts to kill her but is shot by his co-worker.

Films saved through NFPF programs are made available to the public for on-site research and are seen widely through screenings, exhibits, DVDs, TV broadcasts and the Internet. READ MORE

Happy Anniversary John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’!

 Happy Anniversary John Carpenters Halloween!

Today’s a very special genre anniversary as back on October 25, 1978 John Carpenter’s iconic Michael Myers made his feature film debut in Halloween. Originally set to be a sequel to Black Christmas, Carpenter’s slasher starring Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis pulled in a whopping $47 million at the boxoffice. It spawned several sequels, a Rob Zombie-directed remake, which also had a sequel hit back in 2009.

The 1978 independent slasher followed a psychotic murderer (Tony Moran) institutionalized since childhood escapes on a mindless rampage while his doctor, Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence), chases him through the streets. Nancy Kyes, P.J. Soles and Charles Cyphers also starred.

[Blu-ray Review] ‘The Ward’

In a few recent interviews, John Carpenter has all but admitted his disdain for working on films. Although he’s kept up to date with the genre, he seems to have lost his zeal for the creativity that once defined his oeuvre. Scoring? Too much work. Writing? Too much work. By choice, it’s been almost ten years since his last feature – even longer since his last GOOD one – and after attaching himself to as many projects as del Toro, he returns to the cinesphere with The Ward, which proves that he also thinks directing is too much work.

The other patients in the ward, four equally disturbed young women, offer no answers, and Kristen quickly realizes things are not as they seem. The air is heavy with secrets, and at night, when the hospital is dark and foreboding, she hears strange and frightening sounds. It appears they are not alone. One-by-one the other girls begin to disappear and Kristen must find a way out of this hellish place before she, too, becomes a victim. As she struggles to escape, she will uncover a truth far more dangerous and horrifying than anyone could have imagined.
