Director Josh Trank’s Chronicle sets out to challenge your perceptions of what exactly constitutes a superhero movie just as much as it sets out to redefine the “found footage” genre (or conceit, as some would say). While it’s not entirely successful at the latter, it pulls off the former quite well. My full review hit later this week and, despite some minor problems I had with the movie, I think it’s well worth checking out.
Before I saw the film (but after I saw about 30 minutes of footage) I had the chance to hop on the phone with Michael B. Jordan, a super charismatic actor who plays the super charismatic Steve Montgomery in the movie. Fans of “Friday Night Lights” (and Red Tails) will no doubt be familiar with the actor.
In Chronicle, “Three high school who friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.” The PG-13 found footage dark superhero flick opens in theaters February 3.

A new UK Chronicle doesn’t reveal all that much more than what we’ve seen already. But if you’re a Chronicle completist, I’m not gonna stop you from watching it.

Last week I was invited, along with several other journalists, to the Fox lot in Century City to check out some footage for the upcoming supernatural thriller Chronicle. Written by Max Landis (son of John) and directed by Josh Trank, Chronicle takes the standard “teen acquires superpowers” conceit and explores the smaller, more mundane daily elements of it. That is, until things get really big. Which I can assure you they do.
The film is centered around three unlikely teenage friends who happen upon a cave-like space that grants them telekinetic powers. The two more well adjusted guys (played by Michael B. Jordan and Alex Russell) focus on honing their powers at least somewhat responsibly while the more introverted Andrew (Dane DeHaan) begins to go off the rails a bit.
While I can’t judge an entire film only by the 15-20 minutes of footage they showed, what I did see certainly had some intriguing elements. There’s some stuff that could be genuinely exciting if they pull it off correctly. I have a few concerns as well (the characters being chief among them) but again, I’ll just have to wait and see the whole thing.
Hit the jump to check more details on the footage along with excerpts from a Q&A with director Josh Trank and creative exec Steve Asbell.

The origin story is always the best part to any superhero/super villain story, which is why it’s kind of shocking that 20th Century Fox would even reveal the following footage from Joshua Trank’s Chronicle, the teen-powered superhero/villain movie that looks like a modern day American Akira. The lengthy footage displays the teens dropping down a hole in the ground and stumbling across…your guess is as good as mine.
Fans of “Fright Night Lights” will be excited to see Michael B. Jordan in the lead role, alongside Alex Russell, Dane DeHaan, Michael Kelly, and Ashley Hinshaw. I just had my mind blown, hit “replay” and had it blown all over again.
Just announced a few months ago, a trailer is already online for Josh Trank’s Chronicle that looks like a found footage, English-language version of Akira. This sh*t looks dope beyond belief and the February 3, 2012 release date can’t come soon enough. Don’t know about this movie? You do now…
“Three high school students and friends make an incredible discovery, leading to them developing uncanny superpowers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities, and initially use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides soon begin to take over.” READ MORE
Michael Kelly (Dawn of the Dead, Unbreakable, The Adjustment Bureau) has landed the father role in 20th Century Fox’s supernatural thriller Chronicle, slated for release next year, reports Variety.
The pic, produced by John Davis, will also star relative newcomers Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Ashley Hinshaw.
Josh Trank will make his directorial debut with the Max Landis-penned project.
Studio is being unusually secretive about the film and has not released a logline, though sources tell Variety that the story centers on “three Portland teens who develop powers from exposure to a mysterious substance.”
