“Night of the Living Dead Live” has just started its limited run in Toronto, Ontario at the Theatre Passe Muraille till Sunday May 19th. It’s brought to you by the good folks at Nictophobia Films and Co-Writer/Director Christopher Bond, who brought us the super-fun “Evil Dead: The Musical” a few years back. Catch it if you can! When it comes to endings, sometimes you’ve got to take the advice of Jesus (as played by Jerry Cantrell in Jerry Maguire) and hang your balls out there to be great. So while all of these endings are awesome, most of them aren’t exactly happy. It’s not that I’m against happy endings, but often they clash so harshly with the film’s overall tone and theme that you just know they’re tacked on compromises.

This is definitely a birthday worth mentioning. Director George A. Romero was born on February 4th, 1940, which makes him 72 years old today. There’s very little to say that many of you don’t already know, horror just wouldn’t be the same without him. Nor would the pop culture landscape. Even though many of the zombies we celebrate today are modernized, or faster, their DNA is very much entwined with the iteration of the creature that Romero brought to life in Night Of The Living Dead in 1968.
Romero would of course go on to expand his zombie universe in Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead, Land Of The Dead, Diary Of The Dead and Survival Of The Dead. Even though these films run the gamut from “masterpiece” to “skippable” they’re all unified by his urge to use zombies as a vehicle to discuss larger social issues. Without Romero, horror would have a lot less subtext.
Of course he hasn’t only done zombie movies! His filmography also contains Monkey Shines, Creepshow, The Dark Half, Martin, Knightriders and The Crazies (which is sort of zombie-esque I guess).
Wish George A. Romero a happy birthday and do yourself a favor and check out one of his lesser known works today!
In theaters February 1 from Summit Entertainment is Warm Bodies, a new kind of zombie film from All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine.
Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry, John Malkovich and Analeigh Tipton, “The story centers on an existentially tormented zombie who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims and starts a chain reaction that will transform him and his fellow zombies.”
Back in October of 2011 I visited the set in Montreal and really dug what I saw. I’ve been a fan of Levine’s work for some time, but have to admit that I was iffy on this particular concept. But between reading the book and seeing what the cast and crew were up to, I’m very optimistic that this movie will be a lot of fun. Plus, I got to be a zombie (along with several other journalists)!

Document of the Dead, a behind-the-scenes, all-access look at George Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead, was originally released in 1985. Over the years, director Roy Frumkes has fleshed out his film school project with follow-up interviews and supplemental footage, resulting in several different versions. I would hazard a guess that most readers caught the version included in the Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition DVD. Almost 35 years after the project originally started, Synapse has released The Definitive Document of the Dead, Frumkes’ (supposedly) final version of his Romero stalk job. George Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead helped modernize horror film from the gothic settings used at the time to create a new fear for today’s world. The familiarity of the storyline produced a terror that felt more real, even if outrageous. In Avatar Press’ panel, the publisher just announced that David Hine will be behind a new “Night Of The Living Dead” series, which will begin in October. As you can guess from the title, it will be a comic sequel of sorts to to the original Romero film. It follows a young woman in 1970s LA as the outbreak begins, and it will go hand in hand with another “Night Of The Living Dead” series that will run concurrently. See the first cover art below. Bill Hinzman, the first zombie to lumber across the screen in George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, has sadly passed away. Details are slim right now, but it’s reported that he succumbed to cancer. Check back here for any updates.
I never get really sentimental when people in the film world leave us, but I’ve met Bill numerous times over the last decade. He was a regular at the Spooky Empire horror convention in Orlando, FL and kicked off the annual zombie walk almost every year that I went. He was always a cool guy, hanging out at the pool with everyone as the festival started winding down for the evening, and I never saw him turn down a fan for a quick photo in the hallway, an autograph, or even an interview.
He was in several early Romero films – he even DPed The Crazies – but his first scene in Night would set the precedent for the undead in one of the most well-known and highly regarded trilogies in horror history (I count Land as the start of a new one). In this remake of the original classic film, a group of people are trapped inside a farmhouse as legions of the walking dead try to get inside and use them for food.
The dead come back to life and eat the living in this low budget, black and white film. Several people barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night. Outside are hordes of relentless, shambling zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head.
