[Theatre Review] ‘Night Of The Living Dead Live’ Is A Monster Of A Good Time!

“Night of the Living Dead Live” has just started its limited run in Toronto, Ontario at the Theatre Passe Muraille till Sunday May 19th. It’s brought to you by the good folks at Nictophobia Films and Co-Writer/Director Christopher Bond, who brought us the super-fun “Evil Dead: The Musical” a few years back. Catch it if you can! It’s well worth the effort.

In 1968, a little indie horror film by the name of Night of the Living Dead introduced moviegoers to a brand new monster; the zombie or as they were referred to by the filmmakers; the ghoul. Now, the zombie has been seen before in such films as I Walk with a Zombie and White Zombie but Co-Writer/Director George A. Romero redefined them not only by their look and performance but as well as their taste in food. NOTLD set such a strong template that even 45 years later, we’re still smitten by them. Presently Zombies are bigger than ever. From countless video games (Dead Island, Resident Evil 6), films (World War Z, Zombieland), television (The Walking Dead) to even zombie walks all across the globe, they’re a permanent fixture in pop culture. 5 MORE Horror Movies With Amazing Endings!!!

When it comes to endings, sometimes you’ve got to take the advice of Jesus (as played by Jerry Cantrell in Jerry Maguire) and hang your balls out there to be great. So while all of these endings are awesome, most of them aren’t exactly happy. It’s not that I’m against happy endings, but often they clash so harshly with the film’s overall tone and theme that you just know they’re tacked on compromises.

A few months ago I wrote a piece called 5 Horror Films With Amazing Endings and you guys had a lot to say on the matter. So I decided to incorporate some of your suggestions into the sequel, 5 MORE Horror Movies With Amazing Endings (there’s also 5 Horror Movies With Horrible Endings and 5 MORE Horror Movies With Horrible Endings if you’re feeling the hate)!

Head inside to check it out. And submit your comments for which amazing endings should make the next round! READ MORE

[This Day In Horror] George A. Romero Was Born!

This is definitely a birthday worth mentioning. Director George A. Romero was born on February 4th, 1940, which makes him 72 years old today. There’s very little to say that many of you don’t already know, horror just wouldn’t be the same without him. Nor would the pop culture landscape. Even though many of the zombies we celebrate today are modernized, or faster, their DNA is very much entwined with the iteration of the creature that Romero brought to life in Night Of The Living Dead in 1968.

Romero would of course go on to expand his zombie universe in Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead, Land Of The Dead, Diary Of The Dead and Survival Of The Dead. Even though these films run the gamut from “masterpiece” to “skippable” they’re all unified by his urge to use zombies as a vehicle to discuss larger social issues. Without Romero, horror would have a lot less subtext.

Of course he hasn’t only done zombie movies! His filmography also contains Monkey Shines, Creepshow, The Dark Half, Martin, Knightriders and The Crazies (which is sort of zombie-esque I guess).

Wish George A. Romero a happy birthday and do yourself a favor and check out one of his lesser known works today!

[Special Feature] Becoming A Zombie On The Set Of ‘Warm Bodies’… PART ONE!

In theaters February 1 from Summit Entertainment is Warm Bodies, a new kind of zombie film from All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and 50/50 director Jonathan Levine.

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry, John Malkovich and Analeigh Tipton, “The story centers on an existentially tormented zombie who begins an unlikely friendship with the girlfriend of one of his victims and starts a chain reaction that will transform him and his fellow zombies.

Back in October of 2011 I visited the set in Montreal and really dug what I saw. I’ve been a fan of Levine’s work for some time, but have to admit that I was iffy on this particular concept. But between reading the book and seeing what the cast and crew were up to, I’m very optimistic that this movie will be a lot of fun. Plus, I got to be a zombie (along with several other journalists)!

[DVD Review] ‘The Definitive Document of the Dead’

Document of the Dead, a behind-the-scenes, all-access look at George Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead, was originally released in 1985. Over the years, director Roy Frumkes has fleshed out his film school project with follow-up interviews and supplemental footage, resulting in several different versions. I would hazard a guess that most readers caught the version included in the Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition DVD. Almost 35 years after the project originally started, Synapse has released The Definitive Document of the Dead, Frumkes’ (supposedly) final version of his Romero stalk job. Re-edited and re-mastered, and with all-new exclusive material, The Definitive Document of the Dead is the longest version to date. Read on for the full review. READ MORE

Horror Education of the Week: ‘Night of the Living Dead’

“I looked back at the diner to see if – if there was anyone there who could help me. That’s when I noticed that the entire place had been encircled. There wasn’t a sign of life left, except… by now, there were no more screams. I realized that I was alone, with fifty or sixty of those things just… standing there, staring at me! I started to drive, I – I just plowed right through them! They didn’t move! They didn’t run, or… they just stood there, staring at me! I just wanted to crush them! And they scattered through the air, like bugs.”

George Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead helped modernize horror film from the gothic settings used at the time to create a new fear for today’s world. The familiarity of the storyline produced a terror that felt more real, even if outrageous. Night of the Living Dead examined the human will to survive and keep living, with or without the help of his fellow men – a theme that continues to this day. READ MORE

Take The Expanded Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! How Do You Rank Now?

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! Should we go back and pick up a few more old-school slashers? You’re shaping the Final 20! Discuss and vote and I’ll tally it up!

There are now 81 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into!

Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! There are 61 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into. You can give us your specific count in the comments or yell at us for the films we’ve left out!! The categories are:

1-10 Points: Soccer Mom

11-20 Points: Mildly Adventurous

21-30 Points: Casual Fan

31-40 Points: Hardcore

41-50 Points: Unstable

51-60 Points: Psychopath

RIP Bill Hinzman

Bill Hinzman, the first zombie to lumber across the screen in George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, has sadly passed away. Details are slim right now, but it’s reported that he succumbed to cancer. Check back here for any updates.

I never get really sentimental when people in the film world leave us, but I’ve met Bill numerous times over the last decade. He was a regular at the Spooky Empire horror convention in Orlando, FL and kicked off the annual zombie walk almost every year that I went. He was always a cool guy, hanging out at the pool with everyone as the festival started winding down for the evening, and I never saw him turn down a fan for a quick photo in the hallway, an autograph, or even an interview.

He was in several early Romero films – he even DPed The Crazies – but his first scene in Night would set the precedent for the undead in one of the most well-known and highly regarded trilogies in horror history (I count Land as the start of a new one). RIP Bill Hinzman, THE FIRST ROMERO ZOMBIE. READ MORE

Night of the Living Dead

In this remake of the original classic film, a group of people are trapped inside a farmhouse as legions of the walking dead try to get inside and use them for food.

Night of the Living Dead

The dead come back to life and eat the living in this low budget, black and white film. Several people barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night. Outside are hordes of relentless, shambling zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head.
